  1. I've decided if the whole degree thing doesn't work out I'm going to be a bassist in a punk band.

      Christopher

What kind of bass do you have?

  2. Sorry for the late response! Yes, it's perfectly compatible, although I find it hangs like crazy when I try to load up a 1GB disk to capacity with HiLP bitrate. I use the Hi-MD music transfer on my mac, which works very very well, although there seems to be no provision for forcing ATRAC bitrate.
  3. I do not think the question was "is minidisc obsolete", it was whether or not it was useless. On the obsolescence front, well, of course it is to some extent, the main builder/designer has abandoned it and us. We all know this, it just is what it is. When I listen to music, I listen to music. I'm not ADHD, where I have to have a little movie screen so I can scroll through "album" art, play a game of pong, tweet my vapid friends with wifi what crappy boy band I'm listening to right then. For the purpose of listening to music, minidisc works absolutely fine. Not just fine, but better than any alternative for me. Of course, it's an older system built for us old fogies who remember taping our favorite songs off the radio (and not that satellite radio crap) and listening to them under the sheets on crappy quality headphones late at night, probably while reading a comic book. Or building a mix tape for your girlfriend or road trip. 90% of the pleasure derived was the careful song selection, cueing up the records or cds just right, labelling the cassette box and cassette. It wasn't just turning on "genius" mode in iTunes and copying that playlist to your ipod. Ever see an old Tube driven AM radio? Solid copper base, simple gates, usually a custom built wooden cabinet housing one speaker. Those radios are still going. I hold onto minidisc for the idea of permanence in a disposable world. What is an iPod nano at the end of its life? just more piece of recyclable 200 dollar crap. When your MD player goes bad, your music is fine. Jut buy another player. Well, at least that is the plan. Morning rant over, assume your regular programming.
  4. http://pcmonde.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=5&product_id=10754 Sorry, I just can't figure out what they are thinking asking this absurd amount. Nothing they sell is priced reasonably. Are there people who will pay this?
  5. Further inspection: I sat down and threw a good mix of genres onto the one HiMD disc I have, all at 132Kbps ATRAC3 (or so it says in SonicStage). I forced everything to convert at that rate, just to have a good idea how many albums I could fit on it at a good bitrate (a LOT). Well, I am pretty amazed at the sound, on par with SP mode on some of my other MD players (at least in the normal venues I listen to-car and bike). I like especially the 5 band eq. I haven't recorded with it yet, but I'm sure its going to be a treat.
  6. First impressions-it's a slick little unit. Sounds excellent-the motor is a bit noisy, kinda reminds me of a PSP.
  7. Dang-you're in my neck of the woods. Wish I'd have known before I bought my 910
  8. I saw that I has too many hobbies. It was a fluke I won it. It was a buy it now or best offer. I asked for about 60% of what he was asking and he took it. I have a bunch of reg MD units, so I'm excited to compare it to all my other portables. My NH510 is my main workhorse at the moment, and the S1 if I'm on my bike or working out.
  9. First foray into HiMD. Even with blanks becoming like hen's teeth, I had to get at least one. I think I need to stop collecting and start saving for an RH1
  10. That was the one! Brilliant! That there is some inspiration to be more talented about it than just slapping a white label on and scribbling the artists names.
  11. Mos Def, KRS One, Run DMC, Del tha Funky Homosapien.. I enjoys me quite a bit of hip hop, even if I'm old and vanilla.
  12. Bumpity Bump! These still floating?
  13. Anymore, I use Line out and record in realtime off my Linux computers-using either xmms2 or Rhythmbox, VLC etc for playback. Slow, but better quality in the long run. You can use virtualbox or vmware and run an instance of WinXP with SS or MDsimpleburner.
  14. http://lame.sourceforge.net/ also for a nice frontend for windows: http://www.foobar2000.org/ All will need a slight learning curve, but will get your music at the rate you would like it. Now, this is only for anything OTHER than ATRAC, mind you.
  15. Oddly enough I think My R90 records the best in SP mode compared to my N510 or even my deck...
  16. Interesting-so it seems it isn't quite the technology as much as it is the mastering process and the fact that SACD et al is marketed to an "upper" end of music listener. It is sad that the same techniques could be used on a hugely dominant format (CD), but that there is no "market" for it.
  17. Alright, so I've read some discussions about SACD and am still lacking in any concise, good info as to the worthiness of jumping into this format. I'm basically looking for testimonials, recommendations on good players that aren't in the 6000 dollar range, or reasons why to avoid it like the plague. I am not too interested in whether it is a "dead" format, as I own and still collect vinyl. Is it truly superior (at the ears, so to speak) over CD? Best things about it, worst things about it? Thanks!
  18. You have to download the ExPressit software (on the website with the labels). I would look at PhillipeC's recent post about making your own labels. Lots of good alternatives in there for custom disc labelling.
  19. A Sony product running free software? Preposterous!
  20. I loved my sports walkman-I always would take it into the bath and test it. I imagined I could scuba dive with it and still listen to my mix tapes
  21. Plastic Crack Usually I just title them whatever band they are. Boring I know.
  22. I can't help myself. At some point I think I may break into HiMD, but at the moment I am sitting pretty with a slew of portables, some NetMD some Not. Some Type R some Type S and some without both. A nice JE780 deck for the HiFi moments and for SPing all my vinyl. I just won another N510 with a bid on a third still holding. I tried collecting blanks but I just can't help myself and have to use em. DEfinitely an obsession! I am currently looking for a resonably priced SACD deck to use for optical out recording. I figure if Im going to buy a deck, may as well play any quality format (CD, Vinyl or SACD).
