  1. I'm sure you can stop the deck shortening the silences, i.e. turn off Smart Space. I recorded a cd recently that had a long period of silence before playing a final "hidden" track. The deck definitely left the four minutes or so of silence untouched and recorded the cd as it was originally. I am using a Sony cd player by the way, although it doesn't have the A11 interface.
  2. That is the annoying thing, I'm sure when I've used portables to record cds they stop at exactly the right time. God knows why portables can manage it when full size decks can't. Maybe someone else can enlighten us as to the reason.
  3. I have an MDS-JE510 and an MDS-JE530 and neither of these decks stop at exactly the same time as the cd when copying optically. sometimes they stop quite quickly, other times they keep going until the disc is full. I usually keep an eye on them and stop manually or erase the silent tracks after the recording has finished. I have no idea why this happens and it can be quite annoying. You would think the deck could detect the end of the cd and act accordingly as happens with bookshelf systems.
  4. As I stated in a previous post, for quite some time now I've been having problems with the NH-14WM gumstick batteries. In many of my portables, they have become unusable, with some units saying that the batteries are flat even when they have just been charged. For example my first MD Walkman, a yellow MZ-R55 has not been usable on any of the gumstick batteries I own, both Sony and other brands, for quite some time. It would just say "Low Battery" immediately the battery was inserted. I tried different brands for battery of differing ages, all supposedly fully charged but to no avail. I've cleaned contacts, tried adding small bits of foil, charged the batteries with different machines/chargers and other suggestions I've read in various places but all with no luck. Many other units I have suffer from the same problem including 3 more MZ-R55s and an MZ-RH10 whereas my MZ-N1 and MZ-E45 and several others have no such issue. It has been driving me mad! Then a couple of days ago, for some unknown reason I thought I'd try scoring the positive end of an old Sony battery with a small, sharp screwdriver. I then put it back into the MZ-R55 and to my surprise, for the first time in years, my first MD Walkman was happily playing on batteries without the AA sidecar and showing full battery level. So I bought a small file and roughened up the surface of the + terminal on all my gumsticks and sure enough, all the previously problematic units were suddenly working as they should. Why I should have to do this, especially on batteries that are new is beyond me but it has done the trick and made me very happy!!
  5. I'm not sure cleaning the lens would make a difference as it has no problems reading discs but I will take a look. Thanks for all the suggestions. I am going to try and investigate further over the weekend. I'll let you know how I get on.
  6. Wow! Nice find. Have you tried contacting Meijo University directly? They may be able to shed some light on the subject. Maybe they've got some NOS discs hidden away in a cupboard that they would part with. Perhaps there are more designs we haven't seen yet. Interesting. I'd love to get my hands on some of those!!
  7. The Japanese store Muji makes nice purpose built acrylic storage racks/boxes. The larger units hold 117 discs each and cost £13.95 http://www.muji.eu/pages/online.asp?Sec=15&Sub=63&PID=174 The smaller, more portable boxes hold 30 discs each and cost £4.95 http://www.muji.eu/pages/online.asp?Sec=9&Sub=39&PID=176 I have used these and they are well made and look attractive in the home. I would imagine these are some of the very few products specifically designed to store MiniDiscs that are still being produced.
  8. Yes I've tried a head cleaner but it made no difference sadly.
  9. The C14 error is being reported by my MDS-JE530 deck when trying to read a disc made on the CL5MD. The JE530 works perfectly in every respect unless trying to play recordings made on used discs by the CL5MD. The CL5MD itself reads everything perfectly, apart from it's own recordings made on used discs.
  10. I am having trouble with the MD section of my CHC-CL5MD bookshelf system and any advice anyone could give as to the cause of the problem would be greatly appreciated. The problem is that the MD will now only record successfully if the disc is brand new. This issue has developed gradually over time. To begin with, recordings on used discs had occasional dropouts or skips on certain decks but would play perfectly on the CL5MD and a few other machines. This slowly got worse and worse and now, the CL5MD cannot play back recordings made by itself on used discs and these discs display either blank disc, C14 TOC error or the TOC is read correctly but the disc won't play when put in other units. Any recordings made on any make of brand new disc on the other hand, play flawlessly on any unit. This is quite frustrating as, when it's working this is a great system for copying CDs to MD. Any ideas?
  11. The Economist magazine has referred back to and republished an article about the release of the MiniDisc from 1992 when talking about Sony's current financial situation. Interesting. http://www.economist.com/news/business-and-finance/21619965-our-warning-sony-was-over-diversifying-1992-doing-much
  12. A diagram and instructions on how to at least start to disassemble this unit can be found at the link below. Hopefully you will be able to figure out the rest of the process. It looks like the rear casing will have to be removed after you have taken apart the front of the unit. I hope this helps and good luck:) http://www.manualscenter.com/manuals/jvc/xmpx33wtbu-service-manual.html#.VCEo-mex7IU
  13. A normal PSP power supply works perfectly for powering or charging the NH1 (even though it is rated at 5 volts rather than the original's 6 volts). The USB to PSP connector you have may work as the current rating on the RH1's power supply may be high enough, but in the past I've tried using a straight USB to PSP cable to charge the NH1 from a pc, games console etc and had no luck.
  14. You can also get plastic screen protectors for many, many things in the UK Philippe, but I was not expecting to find a product specifically designed for the RH10 or for any other MD unit for that matter. Cheers for fixing the link by the way sfbp. I tried to sort out it several times but the website just wasn't having it.
  15. I have just stumbled across these decent looking, if a little expensive, screen protectors for the beautiful RH10. I am quite surprised such products even exist! They come in crystal clear, http://www.amazon.co.uk/atFoliX-Sony-MZ-RH10-Screen-Protector/dp/B008KLSKGW anti-reflective http://www.amazon.co.uk/atFoliX-Sony-MZ-RH10-Screen-Protection/dp/B008KLSMCY and mirrored. http://amazon.co.uk/atFoliX-FX-Mirror-screen-protector-Sony-MZ-RH10/dp/B002Y3BJLK I know some people were talking about making screen protectors years ago on here so it may be of interest.
  16. If you go into the menu, select Edit and then All Tr Erase remove all music from the disc (or more accurately modify the TOC so the disc is once again treated as a blank disc). Otherwise you can also format the disc from the unit which will remove all audio and other data from the disc.
  17. If on the other hand you just erased the disc rather than actually recording over on it, a TOC clone should allow you to recover all of the erased material.
  18. And the LIP-902 is still going strong, even though when I got it, it took more than a little coaxing back to life!!!
  19. I wil start by apologising for wiriting this post when I'm slightly pissed (drunk) but I've spent the last two hours listening/dancing to some quality tunes on an Aiwa AM-F65 that I bought from a car boot sale for £2.00. The thing that is winding me up is that the notoriously hard to find and old battery, LIP-902 has lasted me well over 2 hours at a considerable volume. What I want to know is, why do I only get about five minutes, if that, from an old or brand new NH-14WM in an MZR-55, MZ-RH10, MZ-E501 or pretty much any other MD player that takes that type of battery. It doesn't matter if it's charged in the unit or in a BC-NHP2 charger, the results are still the same. I might as well forget about gumstick batteries. As I write this the LIP-902 is still going strong!
  20. Well I've just been on the Victor/JVC Japan website and, as unlikely as it might seem, they have just finished a new production run of their AR Color Mix discs. Maybe they are selling more new stock than we would expect. Good to see. http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=en&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dwww.victor.co.jp%26biw%3D1024%26bih%3D644&rurl=translate.google.co.uk&sl=ja&u=http://victor-media.co.jp/media/audio/&usg=ALkJrhh-mFhNB0kBMhce6IvOJA0B-b6SjQ Intersting that the packaging for these discs has the HMV "His Master's Voice" logo on it.
  21. All portable Walkman type MiniDisc units have 3.5mm stero jack outputs for either headphone, line out or both. The ipod's headphone socket is exactly the same. A cable such as this will do the job fine. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-5mm-jack-to-3-5mm-jack-Gold-with-1-5m-Cable-Audio-/261189727249?pt=UK_CE_MP3Access_RL&hash=item3cd01ef411
  22. You want a 3.5mm jack at each end. You can pick these up extremely cheaply from places like ebay. The cables you have seen that will work with Apple products will work just fine with MiniDisc:)
  23. Fair play to you Norm. I think it's great that people are buying your audio books and I understand entirely your desire to do something with the format. I know for a fact that I would also enjoy getting my teeth into a project such as this. I wish you every success!
  24. Sony also still make discs as far as I know.
  25. Interesting...I never realised that you could control real life with an MZ-R55 remote...could come in handy!
