Well, I don't see why you can't paint it IF you don't get any paint on the internals. I recommend taking the player apart and just painting the casing. It's really easy. From my experience with taking apart players (all three players I own, see below,) here's my recommended procedure:

Open the unit and take out md, keep the lid open.

Take out all the screws (8?), first from the main unit and then the lid.

Fold back the lid, unscrew all the screws from the little circuit board. Set the lid off to the side and try note to rough up your circuitry.

Now pull the other larger part of the casing away from the unit.

And there you have it, spray paint away without fear of getting paint on your circuitry. One point though, try not to get paint on the inside because if it flakes it'll get on your internals.
