That's very interesting indeed, thank you. Only last night I read a post stating that the Gigajukes run on Windows. Presumably there might be a way to do just the same thing in Windows, too, Andris. Welcome to our forums. Sounds like we may want to sticky this one. Stephen

HOWTO: S/PDIF Digital Output for MiniDisc Portables...
sfbp replied to raintheory's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
I sorta gave up on this when I found I could just hook the USB to my HTPC and play it with SonicStage. And the first generation HiMD's are way more impenetrable in terms of the circuit diagrams. At that point I ran into the seemingly inevitable RH910 problems that everyone else has been having (with laser power) and I ran out of steam on the project. PS don't forget the convenience factor. The 600D does not allow power supply or battery sidecar, and unlike the 910 will not CHARGE at all through the USB. -
I've got one coming in the mail supposedly.... thanks for the info. Now a little question: can it learn entirely arbitrary codes? I have a very tricky code I need to enter which is some very high number like Hex F1.
-
Problem: the earlier HiMD units and NetMD units are simply incapable of uploading data at the required rate (probably because of USB 2.0 vs 1.0). So it wasn't until we got the RH1 that upload was ever possible. Regardless of Sony's protection(s).

I have a feeling this may have arisen because I ran the FCT ***not*** from within SS. But it's disgusting, all the same. There's a rumour that all HD-based .oma files can be unencrypted without using FCT and without having a valid SonicStage set of encryption keys. I wonder if this means that FCT doesn't actually NEED currently valid files but will unencrypt everything?

I am really annoyed. I can't be sure what sequence of events set this off, but this morning either SonicStage or its File Conversion Tool "touched" about half my music collection. Consequences: a. when doing my semi-regular backup a jillion files had to be copied even though they weren't actually changed. b. directories that had date information now essentially don't have any. So sorting files with anything except SonicStage itself is now an incredible pain. Has anyone else noticed this? Stephen

Wait a second. You mean that when you OPEN it, the catch doesn't spring back out? But you have to tweak it a little until it pops out again, so that the next time you close it shut, it works. Be very careful with that catch. There are all kinds of weird effects on the machine as a function of how tight the 2 screws are on the bottom, that hold it. Don't mess with them but if this is still a problem in 2 weeks' time, then very very slightly loosen them until it pops out. For the mean time, see the next paragraph. What happens if you (when it's open) very very gently squeeze the unit (top and bottom)? If the catch pops out again, I wouldn't worry about it. Having the whole thing too loose will be a whole different problem, and after a while this problem you see will right itself. Be gentle.

It's not impossible that this fault occurs because the read power is set too low (or too high!). Does a disk feel really really hot when you take it out after playing for 80 minutes? If it's a matter of adjusting the Laser power, it's doable but probably only properly with a Laser Power Meter. You can buy a deck for a lot less than you would pay (or pay someone to fix including all the shipping) for an LPM.
-
Don't get too excited... your observation merely proves that LP2 is pretty darn' good. In fact SS transmits LP2 to the unit with a command to pad it out with blank bits to make it "look like" SP.
-
The disks are fine. The Unit is pre-MDLP, so SP-only, and limited to 80m per disk. I would be interested in the cassette deck, depending on where you live. They will work with a bunch of different "mothership" units, too. These Bookshelf units are very nice.

We agree. It's not impossible that the 510 needs replacing. It's one of the models known to have a few very significant defects. I owned one until it developed one of said defects. Decks are pretty cheap these days. Get yourself an MDS-JE640 if you can, you won't regret having MDLP. The other thing is that decks are great for recording, but with an MZ-RH1 (or MZ-M200, same thing + mic) you can upload all those recordings at about x10, no restrictions. Stephen

My best guess would be the PC needing to buffer stuff and being totally taken up with disk i/o for a second or two. I've never seen an MD deck do this - they usually either work or not. If going bad, usually the first thing that goes is the overwrite head, presto blank disk every time you try to update TOC. Now sit down for the whole 80m and see if there really are gaps in what the deck has output, please. PS. How old is your PC, how much RAM and what version of Windows? The problem may be that 1MD at 1411Kbps is 700MB or so.

Is(n't) this a case of WYPFIWYG? (note the prices of the two items!) Stephen

will need to think about this. The folks who have actually done this may be more help the thing which leaps out at me is you describe it in 2 places as netmd760.ini. You need to call it netmd760.inf I don't suppose it could be as simple as a typo? another thought - you might want to clean up all the unused drivers. In addition, the fact that something stopped working seems to suggest at one point one of your installs may have "succeeded". Wrong stuff but system attempted to access it.

I think the Sony NAC (?NAS) series (GigaJuke) is grossly overpriced. You can (and I did) do way better with a custom Windows PC with HDMI and/or optical out. Biggest thing to think about is how to minimize the fan noise, IMO.
-
It's not so hard to have the best of both worlds. I have lots of disks, but I can play all of the content (uploaded) off a hard disk on my PC. The only problem is connecting that to the stereo with zero background noise (hum, fans, etc etc). But it's still really nice to "pop in a disk".
-
(this is just about the NH700) Agree - but I actually managed to trick an RH910 into the locked position too, after opening it (first removing battery) when TOC writing would not complete. The real no-no is to get it into the "locked" position and then try to put it back together. Been there, done that. But the one that was busted was busted before I ever got it, I never actually busted one.

Actually nearly all MD units have a sample rate converter that handles 32,44,48. What they most probably do NOT handle is 96 (or 88, or 176, or 192). Look for an option entitled "downconversion" or something like that.

Aha! Being a Man of Kent I was certainly puzzled. I always get a jolt when I see "Dover Sole" or "Dungeness Crab" (by all accounts the latter ought to be radioactive) on the menu here in NA. I've yet to see "Rye Bay Plaice" though. LOL S

I found that going through the adjustment routine worked wonders. Almost all the parameters needed adjusting upwards by 10% or so. I think this affects charging. I know I had a 910 that would only work with certain chargers, yet another that worked with all chargers. Nothing to do with the battery. My conclusion (no longer have that one) that adjustment is probably the answer. I can think of no reason why it would work with a 10WM (btw mine are 10WM's not 9WM's) and fail with a 14WM. In fact my experience has been to the contrary. By the way folks, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Jim to our community. He is in the business of fixing MD units, runs a very reputable service out of England, and would no doubt be glad to hear from y'all with both stories and requests for his servicing skills.

You need to create one from Post #26. You also need the driver and cat files which are mentioned higher up....
-
I'm sorry, but I will have to give up at this point. You seem to have multiple machines, multiple versions and multiple music file collections. A mess, to be honest. And the objective seems to have changed - we started by you asking about importing CD's, now you want to manufacture them. Anything you do with 2.x or 3.x is likely to be completely beyond my competence. Any attempt by you to move data from oma files that were not created by the original installation will fail due to encryption. There's no reason why Windows ME shouldn't work with the SS 4.3. But I think you have to stop and solve one problem at a time.
