  1. Christmas sounds way too long to wait. The strategy of buying for another family member in case it's suitable caused me to buy too many must-have used MD's, that's for sure. Of course the spousal unit saw through the excuse, every time. After all the price might even go up again (yeah right) S
  2. Sorry, no. The converse is true, the M200/RH1's remote ***will*** work in the NHF800. There are extra physical connectors in the plug (it's a funny shape) compared to the "vanilla" RM-MC38EL you get with your M200. It literally will not push into the socket. The sole exception (other than MD's for which a radio is intended as an accessory) is the MZ-R91. And that's not much use since it still doesn't support the radio, but inserting it (very tight fit) does seem to cure contact problems on the R91. However note that the RM-MC37LT (NF610, NF810) and RM-MC39LT (NHF800) are interchangeable, and either will fit in an MZ-NH700 and work nicely.
  3. 1. I think the buttons are quite big actually (kids are pretty adaptable, it's way less fiddly than the teeny tiny buttons on most MD). Maybe a few too many settings but you can't please everyone. Certainly kid can make LOTS of recordings by pressing record and playback and perhaps FF and REW. Automatic gain if needed. 2. As I mentioned it runs on std AAA batteries, has std USB connx, headphone jack, mics. I even dropped mine
  4. The plus is at the end closest to the outside world. You should check the state of that which touches the + terminal and that there's a connection through (via the hinge) to the rest. Getting the lid off isnt that hard using the service manual. There could be guck at both ends, ie the battery -ve too. A sharp knife applied to each end of the battery itself can be quite good at reestablishing a current path. Is this the only unit you have running on gumsticks? If not, there are lots of possibilities.... Stephen
  5. I have only the "regular" version. It converts all ATRAC to and from whatever. And I think fixes the artifact that you (and I and others) may be seeing. You could give it a shot. If the version you have doesn't convert ATRAC, I'm sure you are entitled to some sort of upgrade. I have this idea that the reason I get good LP4 recordings is that the original source I started with was already at a low data rate (AAC 128kbps for instance). However it varies by source, and so far my internet recordings have been better than those off satellite, in this regard. What did you think of the 2 uploads? S
  6. Maybe I respond in due course. Need some more time. Quick thought - I have noticed that Sound Forge seems to correctly master the conversions. Have you considered that instead of whatever on the fly conversion you get from SS?
  7. Here's another LP4 - Puccini Messa di Gloria. Enjoy while you can, as it is really only there for a sample, and I must remove it eventually. About 20MB.
  8. Welcome to the forums! Sorry, no idea. I'm sure the following statement is not helpful, but your unit will NOT suffer the commonest single problem in recorders, namely the overwrite head ribbon cable dying gradually - since there's no overwrite head in a player-only machine. Cleaning the lens with isopropanol on a Qtip might help, just depends if it's dirty or not The spindle/motor assembly might be tired. Probably not worth fixing anything yourself since the parts (even if available) will cost you more than a used unit on Ebay. However you might have some luck with this guy. Note that he doesn't list your model, however he will know if it is within the range of his capabilities. So you need to email him first. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sony-Portable-Minidisc-Recorder-Player-Repair-Service-/170511876800 Here is the service manual: http://minidisc.org/manuals/sony/service/mz-e33.pdf Good luck.
  9. no way guck and/or bent terminals somehow you gotta charge that thing, either with a charger or another unit that charges batteries I have revived about 5 of these now.
  10. I think I previously mentioned that I didn't use LP4 for opera. Check this out - Mahler's Kindertotenlieder. Not quite opera but most of the same characteristics. I won't leave the file there forever. Being LP4 it's only 10MB or so, though.
  11. BTW, I was in Sony Service Centre to order a part yesterday (to fix my "new" bookshelf unit) and on the wall there was a poster created in 1999 or 2000 showing the history of the (cassette) walkman. There was a whole page of them, about 15 columns by 30 rows, I think. I think this beats MD in numbers of models by one company by quite a bit Stephen
  12. For the umpteenth time, I say, check out THIS. The best thing about it: it's only 2oz + weight of 2 AAA's. Even has a tin(n)y speaker for instant playback, as well as built in mikes. Sorry to shout. I'm certain this is the replacement that fulfils exactly what you are talking about. Cheers Stephen PS if you ever want to lose the EH930, I am sure we could come to some sort of arrangement
  13. Yep. Sony finally permitted those locked into MD an exit strategy. You don't want to hear *my* story. I refused to buy a portable (except for an MZ-NE410 which I quickly rumbled) because I there was no way to get things out of it until the RH1 was released. Before that I could play back into computer from the optical out of a deck. But my original purpose was digital encoding starting from analog hi-fi. The opposite to most customers of Sony who wanted fast downloads of stuff that was already digital. My recommendation, get an MDLP deck with optical out and at least do the transfer digitally. Even if you have "only" a laptop you can buy for $20 a USB audio device which does optical input and output. Hope this helps. Stephen
  14. Hmmm, there's a clue. The RH910/RH10 (same inside, just the display different) don't support SP out of the box. And I just read that the 710 is considered "2nd generation", which makes it of the same vintage. Confirmed on the minidisc.org equipment browser. I actually saw one for a ridiculous amount of money at SonyStyle here, in 2008 (on second thoughts maybe it was a DH710). It's one of only 2 units I have ever actually seen in a store (the other was an N910 at London Drugs). But Avrin did some NVRAM hacking and worked out (I think) that the SP record feature was lost to make way for MP3 downloads, in the RH10. The RH1 is (I think) the only model to have both facilities, as it has more memory. So it's about 50-50 in my mind whether the RH710 will record SP at all. There's no manual that I can find online.
  15. Noone wants to lend their RH1, probably because it has transpired they all seem to develop a problem with the jog lever after a certain amount of use (varies from 3 months to a year). Sorry.
  16. What type of disk are you trying to use? You won't be able to record SP on a 1G disk, you know. Maybe try some bog-standard HiSP first? On both types (80m and 1GB). Cheers Stephen
  17. Quite so. But it's not hopeless: 1. Sony is officially supporting the RH1 starting some time this month, for Windows 7 2. Even without that, if you have anything except the most basic version of W7-64, you get the 32-bit compatibility layer (it's a full copy of XP running in a VM) included as part of the package. THAT subsystem should run Sonic Stage. I am waiting to see if Sony simply does away with any or all DRM with this new release.
  18. Yeah, but you don't say which ones. Not all chargers are created equal. Not all MD units which charge are, either. Some seem to have enough "oomph" to break down something in the molecular structure of an old NiMH battery. You can tell because it will get very hot, usually once, and then after that it will work rather better. When I say "old" I use the word advisedly - the reason you got 'em cheap most likely that they sat on a shelf for a while. Get yourself an MZ-R91? - there are 8 on sale on Ebay UK right now, for not much money. Weird but worked on more than one of these units.
  19. Update: 1. The guy didn't fix it. 2. He charged me $25 (as agreed) for diagnosis saying I would have to pay $150+ to replace the entire MD mechanism (BD board). 3. The diagnosis was wrong, manifestly. I have figured out what is wrong. Very simple. The motor that turns the MD is not turning well enough to spin up to speed. I actually got it to read one TOC, quite serendipitously, so I know the laser works (his wrong diagnosis was dead laser). I also did a number of checks that all reported OK. So - what to do about this duff motor? I don't think much alignment if any, is involved. Unless its an electrical supply problem. Any and all suggestions gratefully received. Stephen
  20. Have you or the laptop manufacturer installed some fancy CD-burning software perhaps? Eg roxio cd creator? There has to be some layer that is quite close to the hardware called Px-Engine, and different versions of it may conflict something horrid. We're getting out of my depth here, but it sounds like something like that is not working. Try some basic things 1. Can you PLAY a music CD? 2. Can you burn a music CD using other software already installed? 3. Can you import music into Sonic Stage from a CD? Now it gets more complicated. You might want to review every option you can find under the Tools->Options menu of Sonic Stage, particularly all those that mention CD in any way. What about Nero? Do you run that? It will do a drive check. I thought maybe SS did one but I cannot see it presently.
  21. What do you need HiMDRenderer for, exactly? I have it and it works but there's not a single thing I've actually been FORCED to use it for. The #linux-minidisc project is based out of Frei Universitat Berlin. You can look here. Also look for posts by cbmuser on this forum.
  22. If you select "Create an Audio CD" from that righthand dropdown, you should get a (right) pane ready to add tracks from the (left) library. Then you have to use the red arrow to select which ones you want to burn. You won't be able to do that until you put a CD into the drive (the RED arrow will remain grey). Not sure why you cannot select the "Create an Audio CD" option. I assume the laptop has a CD burner?

    Sony PCM-M10

These folders are subfolders of VOICE. root->VOICE->folder1 folder2 folder3 You can make further nestings. But the files in them don't get played back, is all. Remember I am only speaking of the SX750, not the PCM-M10. There are actually people here who have one and can answer you better.

    Sony PCM-M10

From what I can gather the ICD SXnn0 series and the PCM-M10 seem to have been constructed to approximately the same (logical) specs. Speaking for the unit I have (ICD-SX750): 1. You can have as many folders as you like in the root subject to a global limit of 511 folders or files in the root. (FAT restriction) 2. To be played back, your ***music*** needs to be in the one of the folders under the VOICE folder which is in the root. 3. You can store files in any arrangement within reason, subject to "normal" limits on Windows path name lengths. I just tried 7 deep. No problem. 4. no playlists. But I can fiddle with the orders from the computer to my satisfaction. All this information (or equivalent) will be in the PCM-M10 manual which you can easily find online. Personally although I haven't got a PCM-M10, I would say the little ones are a better choice for a player for someone who likes good sound. For all the reasons I already outlined. Mainly size. Dropping the M10 is probably going to damage it seriously due to the weight/impact. Dropping the SX750 - I doubt it.
  25. Uh, you gotta type the address in.... "Application Data" is a hidden dir on all windows installations. Or you can turn on Hidden files (under Tools->Folder Options->View). Just paste that address into Windows Explorer, that works.
