  1. Oh, sorry, that's the part I didn't realise. Since I don't have the charger and I don't know what the charge stand looks like (I have already one for the NF810 and one for the N910 but it's not clear either is going to fit) I had better pass. Thanks for the reply.
  2. I don't understand, Anthea. The NH600 doesn't have a microphone input. Have you got it working already? If so, then presumably you are using a microphone with some sort of preamp to deliver "line" levels to the 600. Yes, to join up tracks, put the unit in paused play, and hit FF or RW (let go immediately, don't hold it there or it will scan very fast through the sound) as many times as you want to skip track marks until you get to the mark you want to delete. The display should say "MARK". When you press the mark button it will say MARK OFF. Joining up two tracks is completely seamless, or should be. The timed track markers are one thing, every 10 minutes or whatever you set it to. I think you have to turn them on every time on most or all models before the RH1. Synch recording is another choice, independent of timed marks. Whenever it stops (due to silence), it will make a track mark. This is done by selecting the TYPE of recording to SYNCH REC on the 600. I don't think the NH600 has the ability to change the synch trigger level, I've only seen that on the MD decks (like JE520).
  3. I did a backup as a test, and it puts the file copies intact into some weird numeric directories. If I was awake I could figure out what they are but they don't relate to the way stuff is normally saved in \imported sound. So Avrin's suggestion of importing all the files from the backup would probably work but the music might be horribly (?hopelessly?) randomized. Stephen
  4. I'd be interested in the EH70, I have been looking at one from Germany for months unable to decide. I have one player-only NH700 but the slim form factor of the EH70 is appealing. One reason I held off was hoping that it might pop up in the equipment browser (hint hint someone!). How much is postage to Canada? Oh - it requires a charger stand, cannot be charged with regular yellow-tip 3V?

    ATRAC

Not (quite) true. All you need is a deck that supports MDLP and has optical output. There are several (I have 2) and the only problem is that you must play the recorded material back at x1, into wherever you want to record (which can NOT be another MD because of SCMS, I think). So an optical card for computer is probably needed too. Of course some will say you won't be significantly worse off outputting ANALOG and recording that. I agree that you cannot get a bitperfect copy from any portable, or by USB.
  6. I thought it was horrible actually. Reported it via the "report" button.
  7. Two interesting points leaped out from this report at me: 1. The connection allowing PC->MD from the Xitel company of Australia "saved MD by accident" 2. The author of the report judged that MD was finally accepted in some de facto manner in 2001, which fit with my own decision to get into MD in 2002. Mind you, my own interest was always in recording, and going from other media via MD to CD, but that is probably (although maybe not for the folks here) an unusual motivation.

    Radio FM remotes

Everything is on the remote. Once you turn on the radio, the MD is (should be) dead. In fact I have managed to get one into a state where the MD playback is superimposed on the radio sound, but this is not supposed to happen.
  9. That's interesting.. but seems odd, too. I look forward to delving into this stuff when/if I get a chance. Cheers
  10. Thanks. All much as I would expect. The oddity is #3. When I get back from a trip (or maybe sooner if I can get and stay online where I'm going) I plan to bring this up with the folks in that Linux HiMD project. Why odd? Because any machine can play back the disks, so therefore embedded in the disk or machine or both is information that enables decryption of that dummy key. The reading I have done so far indicates that there is a diskID somewhere inaccessible on a HiMD, with special USB/SCSI commands to read and write it, and this is used as the key for encrypting the disk. This in turn explains how Sony Media Services are able to rescue some disks if you send them in. The project (Adrian G.'s team - "cbmuser") is attacking HiMD on this basis. Presumably NetMD has the same encryption? I figure you will know this small nugget - they haven't started on the (more difficult, because all known access methods are locked to Windoze) task of decoding/encoding SP/LP2/LP4. Cheers Stephen
  11. I'm sure it's perfectly explicable but the OP seems to have two names each with a grand total of 5 posts between them, seems like answering his own posts along the lines of the iFreaks we have been suffering. A lot of confusion can arise by misquoting posts, but it seems to me that whilst noone is accusing OP of being a scammer, that ads and posts created in this manner by multiple aliases should be treated with caution. Good luck with the sale! Stephen
  12. Is this any different from the version I got from Sony Europe? Maybe that's why people reported problems, as SS was rumoured to be written by a British company......
  13. I asked about this a while back, and no answer there was. But the announcement from Sony seemed to say that this authentication server died on 31/12/08. The question that is not clear to me is: why should this affect anything except DRM-downloaded tunes from the Connect Store? I recall a whole hassle when I tried to replace that URL in my system using raintheory's tweak #2(?) and decided that it was better left alone. If you are saying that server would revive the keys in a standard installation of Sonic Stage that "protect" the legitimately uploaded .oma files (from MD TO sonicstage) then I agree it's really crappy that they don't support this function. However I recall that your prior posting gave some sort of clue to finding the keys. Maybe the real trick is making sure there is a backup copy of them that's there to restore. Then you might not need the server?
  14. I have had very mixed results with remotes that have a tuner on them. Apparently the functionality is all to do with the resistance presented to the recorder, quite apart from whether the socket fits The fault I have observed on at least two of them is the radio function is either very slow or inoperable. In the latter case, it seems to mess up everything for a while (eg the jog lever functions on the remote). Unplugging from the portable seems the only way to cure this. I have to recommend this auction - good price, fast delivery, and seems to work perfectly in all the units I tried. He has multiple items for sale. I have no connection with this vendor whatsoever. It's an RM-MC37LT suitable, as the title says for N510/NF610 and N710/NF810 (I am not exactly sure if the 510 and 710 actually accept the special radio plug). But it also works in the NH700 HiMD, my workhorse portable, and presumably the NHF800 which is supposedly the same as the NH700 except for the radio remote. Supposedly one should get a RM-MC39LT specially built for the HiMD (I believe it has a HiMD indicator in the display, big deal!), but these seem to have full functionality. I did fix all the NH700's to believe (service mode) that they were NHF800's but I think they still work ok with the remotes without doing that. Maybe someone knows if changing the firmware is a necessary prerequisite to using these tuners properly in the NH700. If so, the possibility exists that my problems (before) arose from the time before I changed the NVRam settings in the unit. IE that I shot myself in the foot (by using the tuner without making the model number change).
  15. Wow here's an NH1 mis-listed, no remote, for under $10 going going gone.... in about 4 hours

    Cassette Tapes

Probably the player. My reel-to-reel tapes are 40 years old and unchanged. My cassette tapes basically ditto, though the biggest problem transcribing from them to MD and thence CD was the ones that wouldn't turn. I went through three second hand decks before finding this Denon that pulls like a steam traction engine. Funnily enough it still did nothing on the one tape that caused me to look seriously for a replacement deck (my Kenwood had been fine except for the open-close motor sort of got Alzheimer's), as it still refused to play. However all the rest are basically perfect, and between Dolby on the deck, the great A->D on my JE630, and FFT once I get to the computer, the sound I end up with is fabulous.
  17. The UK one went for about $50 US. A testament to the virtue of finding mis-listed items - provided that the vendor is honest.
  18. I have lots of those, and no trouble with them. So far the most problems with transparent TDK's. Avrin knows about adjusting laser power IIRC.
  19. try emailing the vendor, maybe he makes an exception. The UK one is about to expire.
  20. Good stuff. I answered another post yesterday about drop outs where OP and I both seem to point the finger at media. What manufacturer made the disk? Do you think this is something like the laser power on the machine that made the recording being underpowered? My suspicion (and what all three of the failing recordings had in common) is that the disk is one with light coloured, semi transparent casings, where you can see the colour of the actual upper surface of the disk through the casing.
  21. try this, not sure if it is an RH10, it definitely isn't an MDS-W1. I put myself on email alert for that, and was surprised to receive a notification of this by email. Nope, it's a 910, guess you don't want that.......
  22. I have a fair amount of trouble with non-Sony disks. Completely inconsistent between units. At least one machine (all Sony) is always playing the disk perfectly. No Sony disk (touch wood) is ever seeming to give me this problem.
  23. There are always lots of this one for sale on ebay, "Sony Factory refurbished" (indeed exactly how I bought mine). This means it comes with all the accessories and software that a new product does.
  24. Verrry interesting. I might be willing. I am intrigued by several properties of the way Sony "protects" tracks. In particular one oddity is that changing the owning group (using SS) prevents further editing on the HiMD portable. Another thing I would like to know is about the NetMD - everyone swears it cannot be done, but we manage to alter headers no problem even on a no-upload disc. So if we can read headers why not the data too? Looking forward to reading your wiki
  25. One additional nice feature (I never noticed this before): the NE410 does do Type-S for LP2 and LP4 playback. This means the sound is at least decent.
