  1. I use my MZ-NHF800, Hi-MD unit, daily as my commuter unit for about ~100 minutes (M-Thur). At home, I do not use my Hi-MD unit at all. Being a Mac user at home, I stream all my music from iTunes to my stereo unit using my airport express, toslink. In the past, I have used my Hi-MD unit to record audio (second track) for home videos (and a friend’s wedding too). I later used GarageBand to mix the audio tracks, the audio quality from my Hi-MD is just amazing. It’s hard to beat the MZ-NHF800, uses a battery and has radio too. Reliability has been great too, no issues so far. I did replace the remote a few years ago after the original stopped working due to weather related uses (was exposed to rain, too many times).

  2. Hi Matt,

    1. How old were you when you first 'bought into' the format?

    ~35

    2. Do you still regularly use your very first player?

Yes, its my main commuter unit. I use it for ~100 minutes every day.

    3. Do you regularly 'use' your items, or are some purely of interest as a 'collector'?

Use it, extra units are backup units.

    4. Do you listen to 'new' music on your discs, or prefer to keep the format for music 'of the era'?

I use it for both. I do transfer my new music from iTunes to SS, for transferring to my Hi-MD unit.

    5. Do you own more items than you can 'practically use'?

Yes and no, I do have a backup unit to my main unit (same model) and have another that I use to transfer music with (a cheaper version that I bought a few years ago).

    6. Did you 'go away' from MiniDisc', only to return to it at a later date?

No, have been with the format since my MZ-NHF800 came out.

    7. Do you associate use of your player with 'fond memories', or is it a purely 'practical' consideration?

Love the quality of the sound… having a AA battery as my power source is great too to go along with my removable media.

    Best Wishes,

    Tony

  3. According to my hearing which may not be perfect or trained for this technical comparison, I also find the two models the MZ-NHF800 (similar to MZ-NH700) and MZ-RH710 which I own to be very similar in sound quality at Hi-SP (256) using my Sennheiser HD 280 Pro. I also believe that 352kps sounds a bit better on my MZ-NHF800 than on the MZ-RH710. Since my MZ-NHF800 is my commuter unit it could be that my hearing is accustomed (bias) towards the analog amp of the MZ-NHF800 instead of the digital one on the MZ-RH710. This is just my observation.

  4. The durability of my NHF800 has been excellent. I have been using my unit since the fall of 2004 for about 8 to 10 hours weekly. This is the unit that use on my commute to work daily, Monday thru Thursday. I use the remote that came with the unit extensively and not so much the controls on the unit itself. A few years ago, it rain so much that the remote was soaked with water and required a WD-40 cleaning for it operate besides that minor issue the unit has performed excellent.
