  1. For pre-recorded disks eBay is your best bet - but look also at portables for sale as sometimes such disks are thrown in as part of the deal. For blank disks just keep your eyes open - charity shops are a good source. I picked up 18 sealed Sony and TDK disks yesterday for £6.50 which is a decent price.

    What charity shop was that?

Most seemto do clothes and dont deal with electricals :(

I dont buy pre-recorded MDs as the ones i have bought sound poor probably the earlier ATRAC version they were recorded with is poorer than the later 4.5 R etc

  2. When i read the topic title i immediately thought of full size decks.

The only full sized decks are by onkyo and go for about £400 on uk ebay.

Was tempted but i have a 555es so not so much now. :)

  3. The 333es is also arguably one of the best and has the benefit of Long Play.

    I have a 555es as my best player/recorder.

Failing those 2 there is the 50es and 20es decks but they do have older version of ATRAC.

The jb940 is a mid range deck that is well respected which will be cheaper.

It was £300 new in the UK

  4. If you have a CD player anyhow with an optical output would it not be possible to record in real time with the NH1 deck?

This is how i normally recorded/backup my CDs.

Just play the CD because i want to listen to it and record to MD at the same time on my fullsize deck.

  5. I am in the uk and bought from argos some minidisc drawers back in the day.

Also highpoint branded wood and metal racks which stand vertically i bought from a charity shop a couple of years ago.

Might be worth searching highpoint on ebay.

In the uk tapecity website had some Minidisc storage solutions last time i looked a year or so ago.

  6. Yes the jog wheel seems to be the most vulnerable from what people say.

Looking for a couple of years on ebay suggests the OLED display (mentioned) and the door doesnt close

    properly -hinge?

They do feel more fragile than my other MD portables or maybe its because i know they are dead

    expensive nowadays :(

While a mzr50 goes for £25 and was top of the line in its day for a portable.

  7. Sounds a lot like the Rh1 and the 920 disagree on what's physically written. Either one or both may be away from alignment norms. Typically I would suspect the 920.

Try a disk which is dark in colour and see if that makes a difference. It *should* work to do what you are attempting.

What is the colour of the disk?

The colour of the surface or did you mean black cased minidiscs?

  8. Interesting but it seems an unfinished site.

I have had difficulty trying to find a search by keyword box.

I notice there is a paypal icon so you should be covered if you do buy via paypal.

I do like listening to audio books on portable MD as it supports resume from last stop which

    DAPs dont seem to do.

  9. I thought the khz was sanple rate? rather than frequency limits.

Most vinyl rips on the net are 96khz and 24bit.

The 20khz upper limit was apparently what thet thought at the end of the 70s when cd was being developed by sony/phillips.

It seems since then (80s) we do notice if >20khz is present or not.

It is true though that we do lose the ablity to distinguuisgh between 19khz and 20khz as we get older.

That how i understand it but hopefully better qualified ppl will chip in.

  10. I have this problem with my jb980 and sony 80mins discs.

It is only after i have done a lot of editing on a disk.

I record football games on the radio and edit them to keep the goals for the season.

Near the end of a season i get this noisy working harder sound on a well used MD.

  11. I have only transfered music from MD to a PC using a RH1 so cant comment on ur recorders.

"’ve been looking at the MDS-940/960/980, what others should I be looking at if I need to be buying 1?"

    I have a 940 and 980.

The 980 is better for editing than the 940 but i dont know if you need to do any editing on the MD machine itself.

If not editing, get which is the cheapest of the 2 decks.

I am not familiar with the 960.

The 9xx series is the mid range quality of MD decks so if you find them too expensive you could get a lower series 780?

  12. 1) Dont know what you need I use the stripped sonicstage available in the files section of this forum.

Minidisc can be used like a flash drive when formated to a pc format eg fat32 so you can drag and drop as you would a protable drive.

Maybe she is confusing the two different uses?

    2) pass

    3) atrac format. There is an option to automatically convert a file when imported into wav which is what i use.

Then i transcode wav into flac and put it on my Cowan DAP

    4) The Rh1 seems to be more delicate/flimsy than most other MD machines so be careful in use and get a good example when buying second hand.

  13. I use LP2 for radio both analogue and digital broadcast with music program recordings.

No real difference on my 980 for me with lp2 and that quality of source.

LP4 i use for sports commentary recordings ie speech and that is fine again.

CD i always record in SP and vinyl as well.
