  1. The silver EH50 arrived today. For some reason, the sled with the laser on it was all the way out at the edge of the player as opposed to being in the usual resting place in the centre. Quick test and everything is working as expected, but I do wonder if it maybe needs a tiny bit of lubrication on there somewhere as I'm not 100% convinced about the noise it makes when moving from the beginning to the end of the disc for example compared to my other players.. Other than that, seems to be almost as new, boxed with all the accessories etc..

  2. Hi Aaron,

Thanks for keeping us updated. I like your website too, it seems like a very useful resource for Thai MD users. You probably weren't aware but the section on remotes actually originated here:

I probably need to tidy it up a bit, but the info is still good I think. I guess so as it has been copied on to various other websites lots of times over the years. 😉

If there is anything we can help you with in regards to software or other MD related info, just let us know. I like the guides you have with screenshots etc.. We should probably update some of our own software section here at some point..

    Blanks for collection? Or recording?

    Both?

How many silver EH50s do you have?!

    😉

The blanks were for the collection and for recording also. Box of Panasonics, some Axia singles, Sony Red Hot (will use those as I have dozens already), TDK Fine, and some interesting Sony's in retail hangers and a TopValu 1st series, some Daiso's and probably some other stuff I can't remember... (oh a couple packs of Bit Clubs - the Blue telegraph wires ones and the original translucent bar codes)..

Sorry, I meant another EH50 in general. I just have one silver and one blue. 😉

  4. The MXD-D4 sounds interesting Kevin. Look forward to seeing the pictures! This week I was completely swamped with work, but did get to spend a couple of hours with the Victor XM-B22P which arrived on Thursday. First impressions are very favourable, a nice little player and sounds really good too. I'll post some pictures as soon as we are able. A shipment of blanks from Japan also arrived on Thursday, oh and I bought another MZ-EH50 (silver) - oops..

    We wanna see 🙂

Of course, I'll definitely post some pictures when it arrives (hopefully next week).

Anyway they are both a source of some amusement in the office with my "legacy media collection". A member of my "new" team said "What's that? It's huge!". Really? An NF610 is 3 inches square and about 3/4" thick!

Not sure what your colleagues use to listen to music, but that's a bit rich, given that most modern smartphones are probably twice the size an MD player. 😆 Even my Onkyo DAP is a brick compared to most player-only MD Walkman's in my collection. I would probably get the same kind of comments as you did from my colleagues, the vast majority of whom are all younger than me...

It's oh so quiet... (Rich's Disc Pictorials don't make no sound!).

I must have sent everyone to sleep with an overdose of budget MD's 🤣

Click. That's what I heard on the first "Duh". Click. The LP2 copy has a click right there on that orchestral strike. The LP2 encoder couldn't handle it??? Took another disc and recorded that part again in LP2. Click. Record that part in SP (will be Type R on the E12). Perfect. It's real - the LP2 encoder can't handle it!

    So am I imagining it?

Any ideas? Is this a pure LP2 thing? Or is this an SP in ATRAC1 v3 (or v4) decoded and then re-encoded into LP2 artifact?

    Anyone had any similar experiences?

    Experiments to do:

    (1) Does using a Type-S decoder help here and avoid the click? (480 or B10 to try)

    (2) Do I have this album on CD (maybe?). If I repeat this recording do I get the same "click" in LP2?

That's an interesting one, I'd be curious to see what it is - on the face of it, it sounds like a possible encoding glitch, but a bit odd. I have only used LP2 a few times, usually when I was recording from CD and likewise wanted to fit in the last track on a single disc or something, or a very long time ago, when I lived in Holland and had cable TV / radio, I would record music from the cable radio stations from my cable decoder via the optical out. I do have a few pre-recorded MD's, but they are all in Italy and I don't have an MD deck with an optical out to attempt an MD to MD copy. 90% of my MD's are from CD's and I have not noticed any big audible artefacts on the rare occasion when I have used LP2.

On a completely unrelated note, but still kind of within the overall theme of this topic, this week I was really enjoying using my MZ-E630. It's "only" an MDLP player (not Hi-MD) and doesn't have the HD Digital Amp of later Sony's (or the MZ-E720/730), but I really love this unit, it sounds really good and just looks really attractive. Very simple design, but really nice to use..

I also found a close to unused Victor XM-B22P player, so caved and bought that (wasn't too expensive). Looking forward to its arrival.

  7. Daiso MD | Natural Series (2021 Revisited)

Daiso's Natural Series is available in five color schemes: Blue, Green, Pink, White and Purple; and in both 74min and 80min variant. Made by Saehan of Korea, they are very similar to Saehan's own Natural Wave series. Only the text on the disc itself is different and the wrappers have been adapted for Daiso.

The 74 minute discs were only available with individual cases and wrapped as single discs. The 80 minute discs were only sold in retail hangers without cases. There was also a slim case 5 pack version.

  8. Konica MD | Live Digital

Believed to be from around 1999, this series from Konica was made by Saehan in Korea and comes in 60 minute and 74 minute variants. A simple disc design. There are two variants of the disc shell - one partially frosted as shown here and the other completely smooth (this latter one seems to be scarcer than the partially frosted).

Just found this photo on my phone. Darn it, you’re right - plastic shutter! (No idea why this photo is rotated, it was the correct way up on my phone!).

Wanders off to cry into his pillow...

I have a few of these same discs recorded on and have not had any issues with them to date, same with other Maxell discs. You will be fine I'm sure 😉

Thanks Richard. Was just asking as I'd never seen any of these discs/brands and I don't remember any of them making their way into UK shops.

Oh, no problem. it's a good question. I haven't had any issues with them. Like I say, they can be a bit bare bones sometimes, but I definitely use them. All of these models were indeed Japan only.

I was always a bit suspicious of the plastic shutters on Maxell and Sharp discs so I tended to avoid buying them. Having said that, I don't recall ever actually having an issue with any of the ones I did have.

Funnily enough I bought a pack of Maxell discs recently. I haven't opened them yet so not sure if they have metal or plastic shutters but I suspect they might be plastic. I think I'd seen you post some of them Kevin (they're colour ones with butterfly patterns on them)?

Sounds like the Twinkle's (or just Color Collection I think they were called outside of Japan). Is it like this one - if so, yes it's a plastic shutter. 🙂

Those budget ones look like they have metal shutters. The Sharp one that arrived inside my recent E12 has a plastic shutter. I’m not keen on those at all (reliability wise - looks like a disc jam waiting to happen…).

Yep, the majority all have metal shutters. The main proponent of the plastic shutter was Maxell, who used it because they claimed it vibrated less. The TopValu MD's also made by Maxell have it, and those Sharp ones on sale in Europe were also made by Maxell. I haven't had any issues with them to date personally, but I know many people don't like them. Interestingly Maxell reverted to using metal shutters for their last 3 series of discs in 2006, but I think that was because they had outsourced the production to Taiyo Yuden and were not making them in-house anymore.

Is there a noticeable difference in build quality between these sort of “budget” discs and the standard fare from Sony, TDK etc?

Not that I've ever noticed no, the discs and the cases are good. The labels and overall design can be a bit plain design-wise, but I never had any issues at all. Most of them are made either by Saehan of Korea who also made discs for Victor / JVC, Axia / Fuji and others or by Ritek in Taiwan. I would say of those two manufacturers, Saehan are probably slightly better overall in terms of quality of the shells of the discs and cases, but I've never had a single issue with any of these kind of discs.

The TDK's, Axia's, Maxell's etc.. just have more interesting designs for me and much more attention to detail on the labels, cases and index cards (especially Axia), but I quite like the "nostalgic" feel of some of these discs.
