    Hi-MD, Bye-MD?

oh my god, say it isn't so. i am going to get soooo f---ing depressed if that happens. i swear, it'll really break my heart. i was semi-screaming already when i received kurisu's e-mail to the minidisc forum members about this news.
  2. there's an engadget post on that. supposedly the “Sound Lifter” "points the speakers’ output up in an effort to enhance sound quality should you place the system somewhere low such as your floor". i'm not so sure what that means and stuff. heheh.
  3. hi chris! well, i'll do another 'cast in a few weeks when i get back to my dorm (and broadband internet). =) i downloaded windows media player 10 and it worked fine already. at that time i suspected that it could be because my windows xp's default WMP 9 codecs were maybe too old for sonicstage/ simple burner. but i couldn't download WMP 10 because i was home on summer vacation, on a slow slow slooow dial-up connection. but anyway i managed to download WMP 10 and it worked fine after that. the cd-preparation thing. thanks for asking!
  4. hi, i didn't have this problem with Simple Burner before. not on my regular computer. the thing is, i'm living somewhere else right now (temporarily), using a different computer. i installed simple burner and sonicstage, both installed fine. but when i put in a cd and tried to rip the tracks to md using Simple Burner, it said that it wanted to test my cd drive. i clicked "start" and then after a while it said that "this handle is invalid" so it can't go on testing. but if it doesn't succeed testing it wouldn't let me directly rip to md either. grrr.. sonicstage works okay though. i'm using win xp pro sp2. can anyone help me? has anyone encountered this before?
  5. this is the first site i've ever seen which has a url icon with that kind of effect!
  6. some of my classmates use Sound Forge for sound editing for putting in their animations. it's a product that used to be made by a company called Sonic Foundry (cool name!) but has since been bought by Sony (maker of our beloved minidiscs!). heheh.. i don't know much about it since i haven't really really used it. just fooled around a bit on someone's computer. but it seems very full featured. i don't know if it's hard to use though. my classmate had Sonic Foundry Sound Forge 6. that's the one i played with for about 10 minutes. i think by version 7 it's already named Sony Sound Forge. i don't know if it changed much. maybe you could download a free trial from here .
  7. i found MDCF through minidisc.org ages ago. around 2002. at that time i was looking for information on my broken mz-r900. i posted a couple of messages and that was it. i wasn't able to get the mz-r900 fixed though, so i left the md world for three years, until this year. i got my mz-r900 fixed and also bought a net md. heheheh.. actually when i first started browsing MDCF i wasn't sure if it would still accept my user name as i hadn't logged on in years. but it did. i first tried logging on again either in march or april this year. i think there was a short period of a few days when MDCF was out. so when i saw the site was down i thought that MDCF has ceased to be. i actually got kind of sad. but when i checked back a few days later it was up again.
  8. hi! thanks for helping out. anyway i figured out the problem already. it's the "skin". i used "old default" and in my browser the little photo (the white box with a microphone and "live recording") below the music files doesn't show up. i don't know if it's just my browser though (i use Firefox). i changed to "Olive You MDCF" and now it's fine.
  9. i don't know where to click to download media files in the gallery. it's so strange. if i want to view a photo, the photo shows up below the file's title and remarks. but for media files, all i see is the file name (but no clickable link) and then info like uploaded by whom and file size.. i posted a screenshot of what i see in my computer above. does this happen to other people too?
  10. just to make sure we're talking about the same thing.. i'm referring to the *old* (well, from a couple of years back) net md mdlp unit mz-n10. not the newfangled hi-md 910s.. but yeah, i'm sure it's a good unit.
  11. really? haha. i was planning to buy an N10. but i didn't want to get stuck when its built in lithium ion battery dies out. that's the main reason i don't want to get an iPod. now that you've told me about its proprietary usb cable, that's another con dissuading me from buying the N10. i always lose things and i'm gonna be dead if i lose that cable. anyway i already ordered an N910. hehehe.. thanks for the info!
  12. hi.. sometimes i record internet radio broadcasts to my r900 for listening to on days when i have nothing to listen to. anyway, i'm doing one of these recording sessions right now as i type, and i suddenly thought of something. what's the difference between the different internet radio station providers? like windows media player radio, winamp radio, itunes radio, live365 radio, shoutcast radio, etc? i know winamp uses shoutcast but what about the others? for example i noticed that winamp/shoutcast radio gives the song and title name of the current song playing but windows media player radio does not. i also noticed that iTunes radio doesn't give you info about the radio station when you right-click unlike the others. can someone enlighten me on this? i'm really curious about it. thanks!

    Ipod Shmipod

hello! the iRiver SlimX series is a good line of mp3 cd players. imp-300, 400 and 550 i think. the imp-550 line is very thin and light. i've handled it in a shop. i think the battery life is pretty good too. and if you play mp3 cds the remote control displays the title and id3 tag information. some mp3 cd players don't and it's annoying as hell. i think if you're going to buy a cd player in this day and age, might as well buy one which can play mp3 cds on top of being able to play normal audio cds for the convenience. the price range is about the same anyway.
  14. hello, i've been thinking of buying another md player in the near future. i'm either going to buy a net md or one of the new hi-md ones. for hi-md i'm thinking of choosing between an nh1 and an rh10. is it true that the rh10, the newest MD recorder, won't allow you to record using it without formatting your old discs to hi-md? i was browsing through old old posts earlier but i wasn't sure if i hallucinated that one so i'm asking it here. anyway if that's really the case i'll probably be choosing between an nh1 or a net md and ignore the rh10. i want to be able to record stuff that'll still be playable on my mz-r900 (old old old i know).

    Blank Minidisc Discs

yay! can't wait! message me when you put them up! so far there's only one member (kurisu) with photos of MD blanks in the gallery.
  16. ahh! i just read about that in gizmodo.com minutes ago! here's the link to the post: http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/portable-me...ayer-039701.php. "Speaking of Hi-MD, it looks like Sony has whored technology out to Buffalo. For 27,270 yen, Buffalo’s “MD-HUSB” drive provides the same data storage functionality as the “PIT-IN” we just got through talking about, but will also act as a portable audio player. It supports MP3, WAV, ATRAC3, ATRAC3plus, and perhaps best of all, doesn’t require you to use Sony’s often-criticized SonicStage software to transfer files. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say Hi-MD will emerge as a popular format (but honestly, I do know better). A couple things to hate about the MD-HUSB are its crappy plastic design and depth of 29mm (about 1.14 inches). " -------------- the buffalo player doesn't require SonicStage? ------------ uhh, and the pit-in thing. i read about it also just an hour ago on engadget.com. the url to the post is: http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000383040022/ "We all like to think MD is dead on this side of the planet, but Sony’s still holding stalwartly to pressing the medium in their homeland, and PIT-IN’s the name of their latest format gimmick (which we totally should have seen come out forever ago). Basically it completely forgoes the whole music thing and just uses that USB 1.1 connection to turn standard and Hi-MD media into, you guessed it, straight external data storage (of 305MB and 1GB, that is). And yeah, it looks like you still have to use SonicStage."
  17. this is really lame but i really enjoy looking at different MD blanks. i only have the very ordinary "color" series by sony (the shiny blue, green, red and black ones) but i enjoy seeing photos of unique discs-- for example hello kitty discs (even if i hate that character), hard to find polka dotted discs, etc.. see some of the photos of discs that i'm gonna attach. they're not mine, i just saw them on an online auction site. i probably won't ever buy those though. the collectible md discs are too expensive and i know i'll never be able to use those pretty discs. maybe there should be a thread on MD disc collecting where people can put up photos of hard to find/ one of a kind MD discs. heheh.. not many people put photos of these in the gallery. mostly photos of their recording equipment. ------------- i would also like to know the differences in quality between different MD blanks.
  18. hi i last posted in this community in 2002. that was when my mz-r900 died on me after being dropped one too many times. i finally got the money to have it fixed, so now i've been using it again. i'm planning to get a net md recorder in the near future. i know that the mz-r900 doesn't support sorting into groups the stuff that you have recorded into it via MDLP. however i'm wondering if i buy a recorder that supports grouping (well, they all do, after the r900) and if i sort my mdlp tracks into groups, will my mz-r900 be able to recognize the tracks? will it be able to play them? -------- my other question is, what kind of usb cable do net mds use? there's a used n707 i'm keen on, the thing is, the owner's lost the usb cable already. i'm wondering if the cable is something proprietary/ exotic from sony that's super hard to find, or the typical usb cables that one can find in ordinary computer stores? (actually i already have a bunch lying around, for my external hard drive, digital camera, mp3 player etc.. if the usb cable is something typical then i'm in luck!) thanks.
  19. hello, i had an MZ-R900 but it got broken. i'm thinking of getting a NetMD walkman. i know it records stuff from the pc using software and all (unlike my R900 which i just plug a cable n record like i do with tapes)-- so does can NetMD still record from tape players/ or ordinary cd players? or do i have to rip those into mp3 first before i can record them into minidisc? :?: which is better to get? the MZ-N1 or MZ-N707? (they don't sell the N10 where i live).
  20. i wonder if there's any way of re-aligning the heads myself.... =)
