Just wanted to note that this one item is still available and that the price is now lower:
Recent MD gear acquisitions have left me with more stuff than I can use, so I thought I'd offer some items to a new and good home. There's one item left, for which I have lowered the price a bit:Sony MZ-R37SP (SP-only)
Silver color.
A lot of people think this is a terrific unit. I'm one of them, and if it were LP-capable I would never let it go.
It has a few minor scuffs on its reverse side, but is in excellent condition overall and works perfectly.
Original manual included - plus a working RM-MC11EL remote.
$65includes shipping to continental U.S.* I will drop the price to $55 for this, still including shipping. *
PM me or send email to me (bluecrab22 at comcast dott net).
Thanks for looking!

I bought my second Sony MXD-D40 recently. CD>MD deck. This one replaced an MDS-JE480 at work. Nice to be able to play CDs too here (of course I could on my PC, but I prefer to not do that). The other D40 is at home, used mainly by my wife to listen to music while she does her editing. It's attached to powered speakers. The one here at work is attached to Sennheiser HD 202 'phones via a small Optimus integrated amp. There's also a Radio Shack switch that lets me listen to either the D40 or my PC by pushing a button.
I also finally found a Sherwood 7080R CD player.
I'd been looking for one for a couple of years, they are discontinued and hard to find. Found one for sale on Audiogon.
It has, as many reviewers have noted, great detail, although I think it's less "punchy" than my Marantz 5001.
BTW, there is some really great stuff on Audiogon. Wish I had more $$ to spend!

Site down for maintenance since 7th July!!!
Sorry about that, guys, this one should work:
http://usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/1954.asp
I guess I could try to pry the DAC info out of Denon, although I didn't see any convenient links on their site to do so.
It's a little puzzling to me why this unit is so pricey (seems to go for upper 400s to 599).
I like the idea of using it as a 2-CD changer for playback and occasional recorder, and where I'd be actually listening to it - that's why I need to know about the sound quality.
-
I am seriously considering buying a Denon CDR-W1500 dual deck cd recorder.
It's this:
http://www.dakmart.com/itemdetails/18369/175/
By any chance, has anyone heard it or even own one? Mainly what I want to know is how good is its DAC. I don't know how much recording I'd do on it.
Thanks!

Precisely why I only make LP2 discs now. I have more options for units from Ebay, and more options for what I can play my MDs on.
TBH, I actually hate 1GB HiMD discs... too many albums/groups to skip through I think 2-3 albums on one MD is perfect
I found a use for MDs that I never would have expected. I was at our local library with my wife, who got some books-on-cd. I found a 5-cd set of The Planets by Dava Sobel. At LP4. it almost fit it all on one 80-min. disc, but I had to put #5 on a separate MD. Yeah, with Hi-MD it would've gone on one, but then I could not have listened in my car, which was my intention. I am enjoying being narrated to. Great stuff. Great medium.

We use a MSD-E12 deck in our radio station here at our school. I have been passing an analog audio signal through this deck to our board. It recently began flashing "IIC Stop" on the display and no functions appear to be available. If you have any ideas, of what this message is, please forward to me. Thanks for your help.
I am just guessing, but it could relate to the Inter-Integrated Circuit Standard as noted here:
http://www.acroname.com/robotics/info/standards/iic/iic.html
If so, I would suspect a hardware problem. It looks like IIC (aka I2C) deals with datastreams.
There is further mention of I2C here:
http://forums.murc.ws/archive/index.php/t-36794.html
Maybe a service manual mfor this model would offer further explanation?

I did a bit more research and found that the MDS-JE470 deck also has an IIC section. Perhaps this is a standard component of MD decks.
Page 39 of this manual shows the layout of the IIC module in the 470:
http://www.minidisc.org/manuals/sony/servi...vice_manual.pdf
It's conceivable that replacing the equivalent piece on your MDS-E12 would fix the problem. Again though, I am just guessing. I run across similar situations in software fairly often and have to do this kind of research and analysis to devise possible solutions.
It kind of looks like if any part of the IIC were malfunctioning - its clock, for example - the whole unit could be affected.
It couldn't hurt to send email to Sony or even to call them, see if they have anything helpful to add.
Good luck - I would be interested to hear how you get this resolved!

I've been skimming through this thread - funny. just the other day I was thinking how very few failures I have experienced out of hundreds of standard MDs, of various brands. Pretty amazing. Really, just a few out of all those. That's far better than what I've seen from CD-Rs. Don't know about Hi-MD because I do not have one. Now if only my decks last as long as I do, I'm all set!
-
Only the table of contents (TOC) is erased, which is quite a quick procedure and doesn't cause significant wear. Erasing the whole disk would take a long time.
That makes perfect sense and also explains why MDs can sometimes be recovered, because the data's still there. Well, I will have to think of some other use for my boxed-up Pioneer MJ-D508, I guess. Interesting that the portables take so much longer, SFBP. I pretty much use my portables now only for playback anyway.
If only Sony were as adept at marketing as they are technically! If only MD had really caught on in the US!
If, if, if...

Does anyone have knowledge or opinion of how much (if any) wear and tear is caused by erasing MDs on a deck?
I was thinking that if erasing does cause some wear, I could put an older deck I have, that is doing nothing right now, into use as an "erase" unit. Like everyone else, I want my MD units to last as long as possible, so maybe this would help?

I so very rarely use iTunes , ...... and actually do not like iTues poppig up at times when i klik a link , or that all MP3 files and what ever music file get associated with iTunes...
So what do I need iTunes for ??????? Taking up a huge amount of drive space
I'd be interested to know if this results in any faster performance. Disk space was once pretty dear, now not so much - but speed - that's always been at a premium and remains so. Thanks for the info in any case!

I plugged in the deck again and turned it on, again getting the Initialize message, and again after that the deck appeared to function normally. When I can, I will take a look at the battery, but for now I am wondering if the deck's initializing every time it is powered on is a problem in any way. I would like to leave the deck plugged in, use it (probably a few times a week or so), and see what happens. Thanks for all the responses so far. this really is an amazing community!

I wonder if there is a CR2032 battery on the circuit board powering the memory , old battery memory loss , screwed up function .
That would be an easy fix , but I am not familiar with that deck , just with principals of electronics.
According to the block diagram for the the display/power section in the service manual, there is a BT701 Lithium Ion battery (battery, lithium secondary is the description). I didn't see a CR2032 in the Electrical Parts List. The BT701 appears to be the only battery in the deck, and it does seem to be replaceable. However, even if I could be sure that's the problem, I wouldn't be sure of how to go about replacing the battery. Maybe I'll ask Sony and hope for the best. I think I'll see how the deck behaves on subsequent power-ups first.
Thanks!

Because my MDS-JB940 deck would eject any disc I put in it with a C13 Read Error message, I was preparing to put it into service mode as a last resort. I had sent the deck to Sony, who said they could not repro the problem, and when I got it back from them it did work properly - for a while. But soon I got the C13 message again and couldn't use the deck. I put it in its box and left it there. Every once in a while I'd pull it out, plug it in, and give it a try - same old C13 Read Error. So finally I figured if it wasn't going to work anyway, I'd give service mode a try.
Earlier today I plugged in the unit. It powered up as usual, but this time it displayed "Initializing" for a few seconds before displaying "No Disc." I have not seen the Initializing message before. It is meaningful though, as the unit read and played one of my recorded MDs, and also recognized a blank one.
I did find this in the UG, which explains the meaning:
Initialize (flashing):
The Setup menu settings have been lost.
Or the contents recorded by the timer have disappeared over time and are not available for saving to disc. [followed by stuff about Program Play, etc.]
I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a way to get the unit to initialize? I'm happy to have the unit working, but based on past events, I can't count on its staying that way. Maybe I should just count myself as lucky this time and hope the thing keeps working. I wonder why it initialized this time and never previously.

Yes, here it is: http://www.minidisc.org/manuals/sony/servi...vice_manual.pdf
There are many, if not most service and user manuals available in the manuals section here.
Thanks! For all the time I have been here, I never noticed that section - I would always look in Equipment Browser, where there are also links to manuals - but not, it seems, ALL manuals.

Does anyone know where I can find a pdf (or other format) of the Sony MDS-JB940 Service Manual?
-
A procedure detail (from the MDS-W1 service manual) that I forgot to mention:
To enter service mode, press OUTPUT, CLEAR (Deck A) and together.
To exit service mode, press MD SYNC.
Thanks.
Could you tell me if I understand correctly - that the MDS-W1 will perform this "copy" at 4x speed, bypassing ATRAC?
-
If anyone is familiar with the Sony MDS-W1 dual MD deck, then I would like to know the method for copying in the digital domain (non-ATRAC) by which you don't erase the source disc. This is a hi-speed (4x) copy. Someone knowledgeable had explained it to me some time ago, but I no longer have the information. I do not have have one of these and they are extremely rare, but if one shows up on Ebay, Craigslist, or wherever, I intend to acquire it. I'd like to to be ready for that day. I regret not having bought the unit when it was available.
PM me or post here if you have that information.
Thanks!

Note: I belieber I have found the answer, here:

Thanks Phippeb, now if I can just find the deck!

Just now heard this. I think it just about cuts the original! If it were only a bit better-sounding, I could probably add it to some comp or other - maybe I will anyway! :-)

Speaking of the MDS-JE480, check this out. I saw one on Ebay and thought WTF???
http://www.mineroff.com/media/SME9800.htm
Yes, they are bolted together.

Although I was interested in Hi-MD, that would have meant a deck for me. I would have bought one, but I thought that they were just too scarce, too expensive, and if something went wrong, harder to replace than the pre-HiMD units. I had other reasons for deciding to not go to Hi-MD, as well. For example, I have SP/LP in my car, so there's full compatibility all around. I guess I don't even know what I am missing!
What I do know is that since I upgraded my speakers on both of my audio systems, I am finding that many SP/LP2 MDs are very close to CD quality. It all seems to depend more on the quality of the original source more than the MD. And I can still get away with LP4 here at work (MDS-JE480 > small amp > over-ear headphones). Still, if they'd made a hi-speed HiMD-to-HiMD unit (something like the Sony MXD-D400), I might have made the jump. Just not interested in mixing my computers with my audio.
Interesting topic, though!

For my more-or-less "main" system, I have been using Cambridge SoundWorks small, amplified speakers via the headphone output of my Marantz PM-68 integrated amp.
Speakers: http://www.cambridgesoundworks.com/store/m...l?item=c1swblke
Amp: http://www.epinions.com/pr-Marantz_PM-68_Home_Amplifier
Sources include two MXD-D400 MD decks, a Marantz CD changer, an Aiwa dual deck CD-R, and a Tascam MK-102 cassette deck.
The small speakers made my wife happy, especially where I had mixed and matched to have the smaller speakers white, matching the window sill where they sat, and the sub black, matching most of the adjoining components. Everything sounded pretty good, until circumstances found me making speaker changes to my basement system, which then sounded better than the "main" one. This would not do, so I set about researching speakers that would fit in the space I had available near the "main."
Eventually, I decided on the Axiom MV22 V2 bookshelfs and an Axiom EP125 V2 sub. Beech finish.
http://www.axiomaudio.com/m22ti_mainc.html
http://www.axiomaudio.com/ep125_main.html
These cost quite enough, thank you, but I had just gotten a bonus to cover them (not that I couldn't have used it for more "practical" purposes).
I am now waiting their arrival, somewhat eagerly. Very interested to see what they'll sound like with the Marantz.
In the interim, I packed up the small CSWs and replaced them with a pair of Optimus Pro X77s and an Optimus passive sub. Not bad at all. I get 30 days to try the Axioms and I hope I like them!

I have a Sony MDS-JE510 deck which I use in my band to play pre-recorded sequences.
It has performed flawlessly Since I bought it in 1997. However the other day I switched it on and was greeted by a 'DISC ERROR' message.
I have tried several Discs and all result in the same ' DISC ERROR' message.
When I insert a disc I see the usually READING TOC message this remains for maybe 20-30 seconds then the disc error message appears.
Does anyone have any ideas or should i just junk it?
Some of the MDS-JE510 decks were buggy. The most notable defect was self-turn-on, which often led to worse problems. I had a 510 that eventually died that way. Your DISC ERROR message may well mean the deck is done for. I think you're lucky it's lasted this long. I had about the same thing happen on an MDS-JB940. I tried all sorts of stuff, including sending it to Sony. Finally I just replaced it. You might want to start thinking about a new deck. Plenty of 510s on Ebay for low $$, if that's the model you want.

Just got back from Cuba, got some CD's, New Los Van Van, and a girl named Luiba, as well as and onldie but goodie, Legend my Bob Marley, as well as two pairs of glasses for $80.00 and some major dental work and a lower denture for $60.00, that paid for my trip in itself.
NH1 gave random read errors, so I didn't get as much recording as I wanted.
Also, probably the wierdest thing was a copy of a cheap russian watch for $12.00, quartz movement instead of windup, who would of thought of copying russian watches, is nothing sacred!!!

What! No cigars?
How was the food?
I just hope that one of these days normal relationships resume between Cuba and the U.S.!

Sounds about like reality, unfortunately. There once were enough used-CD stores in this area (~Boston, MA) that you could easily spend - and spend well - a day going around from one to another, finding great stuff. Some of them had tapes, too, and a few even had LPs. In addition to these, there were the Tower Records, the HMVs, and so forth. Mostly all gone now, or greatly reduced.
Still, I am invested in the CD/MD scene, and I manage to do quite well via Ebay, Amazon, and the terrific network of public libraries available to me. My local library has a relatively smallish but decent-enough collection of CDs and they also will do all they can to fulfill a request. For example, they once got me a CD from the Anchorage, Alaska public library. (It was a Men They Couldn't Hang compilation.) These sources are all wonderful - and the library is free - but I sure miss proing through bins at those used-CD stores.
