Hi-SP can easily be backed up/played back on another computer by stripping the files from DRM as mentioned here: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=16088

Heh, sorry for the late reply to this... Yes we saw Sigur Ros in 2003... I believe it was March 19th but I'm not exactly sure of the date... was @ the 9:30 in DC.. All I remember is that it was the last day that George W gave Saddam Hussein to surrender his (nonexistent) WMD .. Kinda made the whole night a bit surreal.

What have you just done to your computer!
raintheory replied to mercury_in_flames's topic in The Loft
- Installed Ubuntu Linux on one of my old boxes. - Set up OSXVNC on our G5 so we can work on it from wherever. - Experimented with something I had seen done online somewhere (see image below). [attachmentid=1890] (my finace always complains because I never have a background image set up on the laptop, so I mainly did this as a joke... ) -
Here is the link to the user manual (thanks suckerpunch): http://www.tfto.com/music-transfer.pdf atikin, there is a troubleshooting section in the manual here that may help you get it working. We have it working just fine on our G5 running OSX Tiger.

I would highly recommend greenmachines mics, I got a good deal on a set of them recently and they are superb! -

Uploading CD records on old MDs to PC using MZ-RH1
raintheory replied to azovsky's topic in Minidisc
Depends on how you got them from CD>MD... If you used SonicStage or Simpleburner then no. Otherwise, if you recorded via analog/optical output you should be just fine to upload and convert to WAV. After that if you really wanted them as mp3 you would have to use a conversion program like dbpoweramp (freeware, avail in downloads section here). -
suckerpunch, I've added the manual to my inital thread here: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=16379 Thanks!

Added the user manual to 1st post... thanks suckerpunch!

Either SonicStage v3.4 or SonicStage CP (CP stands for Connect Player) v4 should do the trick. The additional features of SonicStage CP AFAIK don't incude anything relevant to Hi-MD. Although I think SonicStage CP is compatible with AAC files, not sure if 3.4 is... For stability's sake you would definitely want one of those two though.
-
One of these might do the trick: http://www.dansdata.com/xitel.htm Should be able to find one on eBay for a decent price.
-
Check to be sure .oma and .omg are selected in "Associated file types" for Winamp under "Options/Preferences"

SonicStage CP (SonicStage v4) is the newest one: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=9586

Sometimes certain ID3 tags trip up the conversion... You could try stripping the tags from the mp3 first... Alternately you could use dbpoweramp or a similar program to convert the mp3 to WAV and then import and transfer that (after which the WAV can be safely deleted).

The MZ-N707 is a NetMD model. Unfortunately these cannot upload to PC (only download to MD). http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=7070

Yep, I posted a thread about this a few weeks ago. Works fine. http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=16169

The NH700 isn't Mac-Compatible at all unfortunately... Only the MZ-M** models and the MZ-RH1 can upload to Macintosh. EDIT: For those interested, the new version of Mac Hi-MD Music Transfer will allow uploads of Hi-SP/Hi-LP/PC using MZ-M** or MZ-RH1... It will also (!!!) allow downloading of mp3 files to any mp3 compatible player including the MZ-RH10, MZ-RH910, etc. See here for info and download of new version (v2): http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=16379

I would hold onto the disc for now and see if any procedures come about for Hi-MD to recover lost recordings... As far as Legacy TOC-Cloning: If you have an old legacy recorder it should be fairly easy to modify to enable TOC-Cloning... For both of the portables I modified there were two things. One being the switch that cuts off the power when the eject mechanism is used (the switch will probably be located at or around the actual eject switch mechanism), and the other is the one that cuts power and lets the recorder know a disc has been ejected when the actual hinged door is opened (on both the R700 and RH900 this was near the mic input, you can easily see where a metal tab presses down on the switch). They should be fairly easy to find on most models. Try the downloads section for the sevice manual of whatever model you are going to attempt it with. Basically you will need to disable the eject mechanism switch (I had to do this by physically breaking it on both of my models, though they still work fine after doing so), and rigging something up to hold down the switch that the metal tab on the door activated when a disc is inserted. Keep in mind that this will definitely void any warranty on the unit... Also I can't guarantee this to work for any particular unit, so do so at your own risk. --- After modifying the unit, you will need to create a "source" disc... Basically a disc consisting on 1 long track the entire length of the disc (in whatever format the original disc was in). Then insert the "source" disc as you normally would and allow the unit to load the TOC. Be sure the player is stopped (put not turned off) and eject the "source" disc... Insert your original disc before the unit powers down, and press play. Now simply rename the track and press stop... The TOC from the "source" disc is written to the original disc... I'll open up my R700 again at some point and take some photos so I can write up more detailed instrctions of this procedure... For now, I hope this helps. -aA EDIT: Here are a few links that describe TOC cloning procedures for other models (SONY Decks, Sharp portables, etc.) Some of these might be rather dated.... http://minidisc.amulation.com/cloning_procedure.html http://www-public.tu-bs.de:8080/~y0001729/...lone/index.html http://members.aol.com/BorusSylt/minidisc.html http://ravn.net/md/

I was going to mention the Decks with optical-out... you beat me to it

I am familiar with TOC-Cloning and have used it many times to retrieve audio data on Legacy MD. A few weeks back I modified my NH-900 to attempt TOC-Cloning for Hi-MD... Didn't work. In short, you are correct as far as Standatd (Legacy) MD. But with Hi-MD things are not quite the same. My post and findings: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=16131 Another thread with info: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=8178

I've zipped up the dmg file and added it into my first post. Oh, and just to clarify, the drag & drop I mentioned was dragging an mp3 into the music transfer window. Which then copied the mp3 to the device automatically. I'm not sure if it is true drag & drop in that sense.

You guys may want to check this out: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=16379 Apparently the new Mac Music Transfer software (links in post) allows downloads of MP3 to any MP3 compatible recorder (including the RH10, RH910)... No uploads with RH10 and RH910 though, just MP3 to Hi-MD...
-
I just tested the use of this software with my MZ-RH10 and was able to drag & drop an MP3 file from our G5 to the RH10 and it plays fine. No uploads with this model though, just downloading of MP3 to Hi-MD. RH1 does allow uploads though (Hi-LP/Hi-SP/PCM). I would assume the MZ-M** models allow uploads too, but oddly enough they aren't mentioned in the article by sony...
