That's an idea. I'll try that one and let you guys know.
-
I've had no luck yet with this myself... So far I've tried a few different things (some of which were mentioned in this thread), and I'm completely sure that my firewall isn't blocking the program... I even found the actual html error page on my system and renamed it, but just got a page cannot be displayed error instead. Still it is very odd that it starts to load the forums and then redirects somehow to that error screen...

MZ-S1 - disable auto track marking - or workaround
raintheory replied to austreu's topic in Minidisc
Glad to hear the optical cable did the trick! Probably one of the easiest suggestions, and bound to give one of the best results quality-wise. -
Actually from what I've tested, it does still decrease slightly after another subsequent transfer/upload (after the initial transfer which reduced the size). Really though, it would be great if someone else with a 2nd gen recorder could try this as well.
-
There doesn't appear to be any changes in the sound of the mp3 (tested this by inverting the phase of the original, and then mixing the transferred file into it. The result was complete silence, leading me to beleive the changes aren't being made to the audio portions of the file.
-
Check out this post in another semi-related thread: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?s=&sh...indpost&p=86943 May shed some light on the odd changes in transferred mp3 files.
-
For starters, why not upgrade to SonicStage 3.4?
-
Wow that thing was travelling at 48MPH when they took that photo?!?
-
Just checked this and the mp3 is indeed slightly smaller again after a subsequent transfer. I also inverted the phase of the original and mixed it with the uploaded track and the phase inversion shows no difference at all in the signal... ??? Please if someone else could test this I would greatly appreciate it.

- Yes, they are re-uploaded fine. - The mp3 that is transferred back to the PC from HiMD is slightly smaller than the original. I tested this with an mp3 that I had previously uploaded from HiMD and the file size was slightly smaller again. - I did also test by decompressing to the original to WAV, as well as the uploaded mp3 to WAV. Still changed. - The phase inversion test equals silence... - the tags are intact if they exist in the original mp3 - I stripped tags from the mp3 and after uploading back it added tags for the title and album (which i stripped before comparing to the original.
-
Right, the WAV header thing I understand. Also, when I did the mp3 testing I stripped the tags from the files completelty. Before and after conversion. I just find it odd, because SonicStage appears to just transfer the mp3 as-is (without anything converting on the file) whereas it does actually change/add data to the WAV file prior to transferring.
-
I've done this testing while converting the mp3's to WAV before and after as well. Same result. If you have the means, please test this as well though,
-
Actually, the size of the file does change slightly. It is slightly smaller when transferred back to the PC. Also the header information is moved. See my post regarding this here: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?s=&sh...indpost&p=86843

Sonicstage 3.4 Debuts With Stunning New Functionality
raintheory replied to Christopher's topic in News
I think he means that if you encode it @ LP2 and transfer it to a HiMD formatted disc (1gb or standard HiMD formatted disc), you can upload it back. -
Just tried the stripping of tags prior to and after transferring... (Transferred mp3 as-is to RH10) Noticed that the file size is slightly less after the transfer, and the header is moved... Therefore, obviously the MD5 and CRC32 values are changed. Before Transfer: Size: 11526811 bytes Header found at: 1040 bytes Length: 480 seconds MPEG 1.0 layer 3 192kbit, 18411 frames 44100Hz Stereo CRCs: No Copyrighted: No Original: No Emphasis: None After Transfer: Size: 11525643 bytes Header found at: 0 bytes Length: 480 seconds MPEG 1.0 layer 3 192kbit, 18411 frames 44100Hz Stereo CRCs: No Copyrighted: No Original: No Emphasis: None

Yep, DAO. a no-go.. On another note: Did some testing regarding MD5 and CRC values of WAV files that are transferred to HiMD then back to PC. Also did said testing with some mp3 files on my RH10. Results: WAV files retain their information perfectly. MD5 and CRC32 values are identical before and after transferring. However, interestingly enough mp3 files that are transferred as-is to my RH10 have different MD5 and CRC32 values after being transferred back. Personally I find this a little odd considering SonicStage does not appear to be converting these mp3's at all, it seems the recorder is doing something to the data. Seems kind of fishy considering the whole lackluster native mp3 playback on the 2nd gen units... EDIT: Just tested the same with an Atrac3+ file 192kbps... MD5 and CRC32 values are different as well after transferring back to PC. I tagged the file to take into consideration the fact that SonicStage will write album info as "imported from HiMD" if there is no album information listed. So now I'm wondering what info is being added/changed in these files that isn't happening with the WAV files...
-
Understand your question perfectly. Interestingly enough, WAV files that are transferred to HiMD then back to a PC retain their bit-by-bit information (MD5 & CRC32)... However, I just tested with an mp3 and the MD5 and CRC32 values were different... Let me test this with at least one more mp3 and post back... This is very interesting because SonicStage does not appear to be changing mp3's when it transfers them to 2nd gen HiMD recorders, whereas when you transfer a WAV file, it converts it (to PCM)... EDIT: Retested this and the MD5 and CRC32 values are indeed different. Strange.

MZ-S1 - disable auto track marking - or workaround
raintheory replied to austreu's topic in Minidisc
You should be able to find a TOSLINK cable with a miniplug (or adapter) on one end, no problem. Not proprietary. -
You have to go under the menu (make sure menu mode is set to advanced) and under "Option/EL Light" set it to "On". If it is set to "Auto-off" then the recorder will only display that it is recording and show the arrow thingy.

New Avatar: A very interesting fractal-looking piece of green cauliflower (broccoliflower) that we got from the grocery store. Really kind of blew my mind looking at it, so I had to take some pics. It is very much a fractal, the smaller parts that make up the spiral are small versions of the same type of spiral...

Great answer there!!! -
Alternately, you could try reinstalling/updating windows media player, that should fix the codec issue.

MZ-S1 - disable auto track marking - or workaround

That optical idea might work... Although I know I have tried recording via optical and had the same thing happen in the past. Definitely worth trying though! Good call! -
MZ-S1 - disable auto track marking - or workaround
raintheory replied to austreu's topic in Minidisc
Eww... There's no way that I know of to disable the auto track-marking. Just about every available model that I know of will automatically place a track mark (when recording via line/optical in) if the level is low enough for 2 or 3 seconds... Aside from adding some background music to the spoken word , the only workaround that I could possibly think of would be either using sonicstage on a PC if you have one, or even using Virtual PC on the Mac if you have it. I'm not sure of the reliability of SonicStage on Virtual PC when transferring music to the recorder, but I know it most likely will not be as good as with an actual PC running SonicStage... Hopefully someone else may have some ideas for you, that's really a bummer...
