  1. I have been reading my way thrugh this thread - not all of it but enough. I use the MD format. I use the iPod and I even use Aeroplayer on my Palm. I wouldn't be willing to say that any of them is better than the others - they are different. That said, I wouldn't want to use the player on the Palm as a primary portable music device. For a short flight - it is fine. I have and use both the MD and the iPod and I like them both. the iPod is certainly easier to use - and very convenient. That said I like the MD, and the "richness" of the sound. I was going to buy a Hi-MD, really just to have one. Then I noticed that they have vanished from the stores hereabouts, to top it off I saw an ad for the MZ-NF520 at one of the stores here, $75. I think I will buy one and stick it on the shelf just in case, but I will continue to travel with my iPod, and frankly most of my listening is to the iPod. When I am away for days at a time, the iPod is easier, it is more convenient, and that is the most important factor to most consumers. Too many here are trying to turn the issue of MD v. iPod into some sort of religious war, that is foolish. The disparaging comments about people who have not chosen MD are also foolish. These are consumer electronics and convenience and ease of use will win out. As will marketing - and to be honest - Sony have really done a crappy job ( read non-existent) job of trying to market the MD. I think the MD is going to disappear from the Sony line-up and thatis too bad, but it is Sony's fault, not the poor mis-guided, uninformed consumer.
  2. I have a mini iPod and a couple of MD players. I typically get somewhere around 7 to 8 hours on the battery - plenty for any plane travel I do. i appreciate having the selection of 700 to 800 songs and maybe a couple of audio books - the sound is extremely good. I typically rip CDs at about 256 or 320 bit rate - highest I can get. As far as i am concerned - no difference. I have no complaints with the iPod or with the MD - different formats. If I'm working around the house or in the yard or my shop I usually use the MD ( stuffed in my pocket) and change discs a few times during the day.
  3. Didn't know the T-Board was down - Sorry to hear that. Good to see names I recognize though

    Mac compatibility

is support from Roxio through Toast so that we could make a disc image and burn it to MD. This should not be that hard either because already lets you make disc images in any of a number of formats, including MP3 disc, so what we would really need is a driver to recognize the MD recorder and support download of the disc image to the MD, at high speed. The current software will support CD burners at speeds up to 56X, so what would the challenge be to create the burner driver???

    NET MD question

I frankly wouldn't even let VPC near my office machine. I have a network in the house and I set up a playlist folder on the PC that is in the basement and then transfer to it the music I want to convert and load on the the MD. Then when I have I some time I convert the plylists and transfer them to the MD. Flawless operation. Then I delete the coverted playlist and the original files off the PC harddrive. NO checkin issues because all of the music files are on the monster hard drive attached to the UNIX running Mac in my office.

    NET MD question

That screen shot you put up of the option selection box in Sonic Stage was a screen shot from Mac OSX - what gives?? What software is that??
  7. If I have a M505 coming (used) and an R700 coming (new, never opened) and only intend to keep one - which should I keep? I'm thinking the R700 just because it is new and unused and my "clock" starts running right now interms of Sony warranty and etc. What would you recommend knowing the units?
  8. I took a 505 into the repair depot last week. It was a "toss-in" on an ebay sale. The fellow that sold it said he hadtried to hack the Ram and it was now jusr flashing NV ERR. The quote to repair $155.00. Fellow at the depot said they have five more sitting there waiting for the same repair. BTW, this one is bound for the garbage, I will NOT pay $155 to fix it when a brand new unit can be had for less.
  9. What is the difference between these two units and is one better than the other? I looked at the features chart on the equipment page and as far as I can see the differnces are that ATRAC is different and the 505 is NETMD. However, what practically do these differences mean? What is the difference between ATRAC at >4.5 and at DSP-R? Does one use the USB and one doesn't?? Also if the r700 is not NETMD does this just mean it doesn't plug into the USB?? Any help appreciated. JIM
  10. I need a new battery ( or three) for the Sony MZ-R50. The battery is described as LiP-8. IS there a X-ref to the batteries I see available online so that I can order a new battery. Thanks for any help. JIM
  11. I bought two MD's on eBay a couple of weeks ago, generally useable though some repair depot time needed. I usually load new CDs directly onto the hard drive I run the stereo off and am in the process of converting all of our old vinyl, the real reason I bought the MD. I went to play an album yesterday and the MP3 file would not play - kept getting an "Unknown Mpeg type" error. However, I had the same album on a memory card in my Palm Tungsten T, plugged that into the MD, recorded to MD and then through Spin Doctor uploaded back to the computer to replace the buggy file. A couple of things about the process, first coming off the Palm to the Md then to the computer I did not expect the sound quality to be great, I was wrong it is very good. Second, this was very surprising; when I recorded the LP originally I recorded it as one file rather than breaking it into tracks. After recording from the Palm to the MD, I had 11 individual tracks which then transferred across to the computer. This was a nice surprise and a positive on what MD can do for me.
  12. I am now the owner of a 505 which was thrown in as part of an eBay auction as the previous owner had tried to hack the RAM and bolloxed it in the process. The unit now shows just NV ERR in the display. I have read the various posts here on trying to reset the values, etc. Problem is even after removing the battery and powering it down I can't get into Test mode. Is there a way short of soldering the bridge or do I just take this little unit off to an electrics service place?? Thanks for the help. JIM
  13. .. My thinking is that if I can find the default settings for the 505 I will try my hand at fixing the damn thing, failing that I have a really good non-Sony repair joint in town that has done wonders on some of my other gear from time to time. Does anyone know where I can lay hands on the default settings for a 505 or is there a code to restore factory defaults?? Jim
