  1. First, use the manual rec level setting, not automatic.

Since you are using a battery box, you should go Line In so that you can record higher sound levels without clipping.

Going line in, you will need to record kinda high on the levels. I record jazz gigs with the levels all the way up. For really loud music, somewhere around 25 should work. The great thing about the RH1 is you can see the levels while recording and adjust on the fly and next time you turn it on, the levels are the at the same setting.

  2. I have been in love with MD since the R90 days....I still think it's the best sounding live recording device and the only option for stealth recording.

BUT! As soon as I can record in .wav or linear PCM on my iPhone....my RH1 and NH1 may be used a lot less.

  3. I also have a similar, if not the same, problem:

    http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=20946

Some guys have recommended tightening up some of the screws. I haven't tried this yet...

I started using my NH1 for crucial stealth recordings. I gotta admit it is a much sturdier design. The problem is, I'm switching over to Mac from PC and the NH1 doesn't upload to Mac like the RH1 does. Oh well, trouble in paradise I guess...

  4. You can combine, yes. I just tried and it gave me the option to. Track marks, not sure. But you can split a track at an exact point, and it should count as a track mark at the beginning of each track.

After uploading to SS and combining tracks in the 'My Library' side, is it still possible to edit the disc using the recorder while not connected to a computer?

Also, when you combine tracks in My Library, are they gapless? As an example, if you uploaded a recording of a live performance with a bunch of track marks made by the recorder (because it was recorded using Line In) and then combined the tracks; would the resulting track play continuously without any pauses or glitches?

    Thanks....

  5. You should be able to edit from within Sonicstage once you upload.

I don't think you can edit the tracks on the disc using SS. You must upload first and edit the uploaded files.

Is it possible to combine tracks once uploaded to SS? Is it possible to place track marks in SS?

  6. My silver RH1 has exactly the same problem. I know all I need to do is take it apart and readjust some screws, but I just haven't got round to it yet. Therefore I chose my silver one over my black one as to be my uploader / downloader Hi-MD unit permanently next to my computer.

Keep your made in Japan NH1 as your workhorse and / or buy a second RH1 like I did -though I didn't already own an NH1 like you-, as it's true the RH1's extra features do make it more versatile (standard mini USB connector for transfers and charge, USB 2.0, manual settings memory as you stated, Mac compatibility).

Are the internal screws tough to get to? Is there a repair manual to help with this?

I plan to keep the NH1 but I'm thinking I should just go ahead and buy another RH1. I need it for legacy uploads and I also want to eventually work on Macs and not PCs (I wish Sony would allow legacy uploads to Mac)

Plus, the LCD and the level meters on the RH1 make it so much more user friendly.

  7. You don't need to separate or remove anything. Leave it in you Applications folder, just foloow these steps:

    1. Run the installer and install both: Monitor and Transfer apps.

    2. Then go to System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items and delete Hi-MDmonitor from the list.

    3. Open Activity monitor, find and quit the process, or restart computer

    That's it...

Next time you connect your Hi-MD unit to your computer you have to start Hi-MD Transfer manually, everything else works great.

    Admin:

This is extremely useful information. There is a lot of misinformation out there on this important topic. Can you make it more visible, please?

Even minidisco has it wrong on their M200 page. It states that it is not compatible with leopard. Thanks a ton, Sixx, for this post...

  8. My RH1 has become undependable. When pressure is applied to the area around the rubber foot under the right side of the screen, it shuts off and restarts itself.

I am debating getting a second RH1, but my NH1 still works fine. Also, the RH1 still uploads properly. I have a bunch of classic MD recording that I still haven't uploaded so I need a functioning RH1.

I could get by recording on my NH1 and just using the RH1 for uploads. But, I am wondering:

    1. The RH1 recordings sound great. Does the RH1 record higher quality sound than the NH1, or are they the same in this regard? (I am aware that the RH1 has convenient recording features like remembering your settings, but I am asking only about sound quality.

    2. Are recordings made on an NH1 uploadable to mac?

    3. Does anyone know of a good source for RH1's? The best I've found has been old faithful www.minidisco.com (they have the M200 model)

    Thanks in advance...

  9. I made a live recording onto my RH1 last night and it came out very well (used NT4 mic). Today, I accidently deleted some tracks in Sonicstage (I thought they were just crowd noise, but they weren't).

Is there any way to get them back? They weren't uploaded yet. Are they still on the disc somehow?

  10. I love Hi-MD and do not own an iPod. But, I find Apple's iPhone and Touch and new iPods to be very appealing. I have not found any products (mics) out there yet that would enable live recording of music on the latest generation of ipods or the iphone. Does anyone know of anything out there?

The iPhone seems to have some potential in this regard due to the fact that the earphones also act as a microphone. But, it does not currently take voice memos.

For the time being, it seems to me that for recording live music (and especially for stealth recording) the RH1 is still the best choice. Am I missing something?

    Thanks in advance...

  11. Has anyone tried using one of the USB car chargers from Boxwave? They offer a standard

and High Output charger that plugs into your car power outlet and your USB cord plugs into it.

For use with an RH1? I use a Razr car charger...

  12. I have some updates...I received the following email from the repair center in Laredo:

We are pleased to inform you that the repair of your HI-MD PLAYER/RECORDER, Model #: MZRH1 has been completed. We are currently preparing this unit for shipping. It will be returned via UPS, 3rd Day Service. We have already charged a total of $77.00 to your account. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

    Fax (956) 728 - 2132

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I responded by asking if they could tell me what was wrong with the unit. Here is their answer:

According to our Technician’s evaluation, the unit needed only one part replaced. The OP Service Assy was faulted and needed replacing. After the unit was repaired, we sent it to our Quality Assurance Team who determined that the repair was a success. If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact us.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyone know what the OP Service Assy (assembly?) is?

  13. Would you care to share how? I can't try it because mine is on it's way to Laredo, TX, but for the sake of the quality of this thread it'd be nice for the procedure to be in here. Also, I 'll probably have to do it at some point as will others...

  14. not sure. I took apart my MZ-R90 back in the day, made a sodder, and put it back together and it worked. But I don't know what a laser realignment would entail...

  15. Does the unit go past the Walkman logo when no disc is inserted? If yes, then the laser circuit probably needs adjustment. Have you tried different types of discs (1Gb HiMD, Hi-MD formatted MD, MD)?

Yes, it would say "no disc" when no disc inserted. I did not try different types of discs other than 1Gb HiMD.

The manual says to contact www.sony.com/walkmansupport

I went to this site and found a helpful repair page. It took my credit card number and asked when the unit was purchased. I entered the info and it said the unit is still under parts warrantee provided I provide proof of purchase and that labor would be around $29 dollars. It gave me a printout with a barcode and instructions for sending to Laredo, TX.

Sent it out yesterday via US priority mail (cost $8.10). I'll post updates...

  16. oops, I meant 2006. Minidisc Canada said they cannot replace, although their website says some items are guaranteed for a year. They also said send it back to Sony.

My NH1 did the same thing, was an "optical unit" replaced the part free, but charged me $80.00 USD for an out of warranty unit. Send it back.

    Bob

How long did it take to get it back?

Thanks everyone...this is the first MD unit I've had break down on me. My MZ-R90, DR-7, NH1 all still work fine. $80 is better than $300 for a new one.

If it's not under warrantee, I might as well send it to Sony USA, right? I'm in Chicago...

  17. logic chip.......still under warranty?

Actually, it may be. I got it right when it came out from minidisc canada. Just checked their website and it may have a 1 yr warrantee. My order was placed 6/21/2007.

I just found out that I can still get into the menus by holding down the menu button, and that comes up on the screen. Not that I can do anything with that. The unit keeps making the noise and can't read the disc. Does ur diagnosis still stand? It sounds appropriate to me...

What causes the logic chip to go bad? Did I bang it too hard in my bag? Dust?

    Thanks...

  18. I pulled my RH1 out of my bag at work yesterday and, as normal, plugged in my headphones and pressed play. The unit started making an unfamiliar noise like it was trying to read the disc and wouldn't play. It makes the noise for about 5 seconds, then stops for about 1 second, then starts again. In the display is only the 'walkman' logo.

I've tried ejecting and reinserting the disc, different discs, take out battery and replace, recharge, even gave it a couple of good punches. Nothing seems to be snapping it out of whatever it's doing.

Any suggestions? Anyone else encounter this?
