  1. I'm glad I have my NH700 and glad I have 10 Hi-MD disc from when they were cheap at JB Hifi. Well, as soon as I have the means I think I'll be picking up an NWHD5, I'm sick of losing music across too many discs and sick of converting mp3 to oma. That way I can save my NH700 for making recordings too! I wonder if Sony will ever have a recording function on an HD player? Doesn't seem that far fetched to me...
  2. I worked it out. The mp3 files in question had .gif images as their cover art, when I changed them to .jpg images, sonicstage was happy. Freakout. Thanks for your help Syrius.
  3. Hey everybody, I have a reasonably strange problem with sonicstage, here are the symptoms: when I double click on any of two particular albums in my library (or even select their name in the list) Sonicstage crashes and windows reports the usual "had to close" message. If I click to file the error report I'm taken to a microsoft page saying they and sony know about the error but have no particular fix. Now, this started a few weeks ago but I haven't had much time to deal with it, there was no other problem with any other album in my library. I read a couple of faqs and searched around here and thought maybe it was a database problem, so I went through the database fixes and used the MDAC program, upgraded to SS3.2 - no success. I deleted all the files in my library and imported all the sonicstage files again. I imported each of the two particular albums and once again, selecting their names causes sonicstage to crash. So, I imported some different mp3s I didn't already have in the library - they didn't cause sonicstage to crash. My question is: does anyone know of a species of mp3 that might cause trouble with sonicstage? I need to get some more info about the particular files but I'm not at home right now. I'm thinking the answer could be something along the lines of "wierd version of id3" or "wierd format album art imported in iTunes". Thanks, Chuck. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some system information in case anyone thinks it's an issue: AMD Athlon 64 3500 1GB Ram GeForce 6600 (AGP)
  4. Although I'm not the *world's* most informed authority on headphones, I think I can give some good input here. Just for the record: First model are hifi headphones: 1 MDRCD580 - over the head, hifi Three of those models are noise-cancelling headphones: 2 MDRNC5 - over the head style 3 MDRG94NC - street style 4 MDRNC11 - in ear style I think 1 is the best deal and best bet for a great even sounding set of headphones. Without having heard them, 1 is the right price point (RRP) for entry level "serious" headphones - these would probably give the best sound over the whole spectrum musical styles, they would definately blow away the stock headphones that come with any portable music player. Personally, I wouldn't go for the noise cancelling models. I always have found those type of headphones to be wierd and bulky, although they are becoming more popular and hence, more stylish and useful. From a sound point of view, they would definately all sound great. Any phones will be geat for A$200+. They probably wont sound as good as 1 because they are designed to put music over a noisy environment. 1 is not designed to be used on a bus or in a plane, it's designed for hifi music enjoyment at home. I wish I could throw in some fancy terms like sound stage or tone, but I do know that when I was choosing headphones I liked open style hifi phones better than gimmicky noise cancelling phones, so I think 1 is definitely the winner here.
  5. My MZ-N505 keypad is screwed up as well, exactly the same symptoms. In the end I upgraded to an MZ-NH700 because I wanted a microphone input. But now the jogwheel on my Nh700 is broken! while it's being repaired I'm back to my N505 and trying to fix the face! I actually opened mine up to see if I could clean the buttons or something. But there was nothing to fix! Does anybody have more details about this problem?
  6. Yeah, same problem as you tartan, the wheel works if I apply significant pressure, and it clicks and turns without pressure, just no response. I didn't think it had any gears it though, I thought the back of the jogwheel would just have little bumps that click down a small switch in the face. I really can't think how it would get detached. Mine is still under warranty, so I handed it to a service center yesterday. No service manual so I can't speculate any further. But for now, I'm back to my MZ-N505. *sigh* ...good times, good times. About your remote, when the remote for my N505 got smashed by being dangled out of a car door for a day I opened it up just for kicks. Actually it was only the plastic external buttons that got smashed and the remote works fine if you press the metal buttons on the pcb. If you want to take a look inside, the remote for the NH700 is actually quite simple, I'm sure you could open it up and poke around. Try pressing the circular metal buttons with your fingernail to test if the circuit is broken or if the plastic buttons are missing their targets. The other thing with the remote is that the wires could be broken. If you have a multimeter, you could check continuity between the wires soldered to the pcb and the contacts on the minidisc end plug. Maybe one of the solder joints has come loose.
  7. I wouldn't want a Hi-MD drive on my computer. USB 1 is just too slow for a backup solution. I *do* use Hi-MD to store some data, but I already have a minidisc player that I use every day for listening to music and making microphone recordings, so it's convenient for me to have some files on the discs and only have to take one cable to access them anywhere. This drive is aimed at a backup/convenient storage market which has simply moved past this kind of technology. For convenient storage, a 1 GB USB key costs A$150 and where I live, the majority of business people and students use this kind of technology, with far higher transfer rates and ease of use than a disk/drive solution. For long term backup, DVD+-RW with DL cost A$180 and the media is becoming cheap enough for people to buy stacks of 50 DVDs, Portable hard discs are also inexpensive and easy to use. Compared to these technologies Hi-MD is ridiculously slow and really has too little capacity for any serious backup. In my opinion, Sony will offer this drive at a price point above USB keys and around the same level as DVD RW and portable hard drives. Given the high price to performance ratio, I can think of few if any people who will go for this technology.
  8. The other day I picked up my nh700 to listen to some hip tunes only to find the jog wheel would turn but have no response on the player! I bought it last august so it's still within warranty here in australia, but what really sucks is this is almost the same as what happened to my previous md, the N505. My n505 still works fine except for the four way digital pad which is unresponsive and pushing a button rarely gives the correct response. Has anyone else had button woes?
  9. Here in Canberra JB HiFi has been selling them since a bit before christmas. For A$9.85 each. I bought three. YAY!!
  10. Hey all, I just bought some Sennheiser HS497s, these head phones come with a detachable cord which can be bought as a spare part. It doesn't seem like it would be too hard to make a short cord out of a regular cord, especially since there isn't so much risk involved. Has anybody else performed this kind of operation? --Chuck.
  11. Wow! I know it's only an alpha and will probably screw things up, but I just converted some files and they seemed to work pretty well. You just justified the decisions of all those who bought Hi-MD units for recording! Thanks Marc!
