  1. I just posted my preamp solution the other day. It's not completely scratch built nor is it as outrageously expensive as the commercial solutions: http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=6787 --david
  2. At first I was tempted to purchase a premade microphone to line-out solution, but I found most to be what I consider to be ridiculously expensive. My cheapness forced me to find a more creative solution... I used an Altoids tin, a 4-AAA battery holder and a 2.5mm jack to build a battery box for an Apple PlainTalk microphone ( http://www.welovemacs.com/922-0867.html ). This microphone has a built-in preamp and can be had off eBay for well under $5. I chopped the custom connector off the microphone and put a 3.5mm stereo plug on the audio output and a 2.5mm mono plug on the power leads to plug into the Altoids battery box. The total cost was under $15 (I got most of the parts from Radio Shack - they could have been more cheaply mail ordered, and I already had the microphone). I have been using my Sony MZ-S1 to record talks with this home-brew solution for about a year now. I am completely pleased with the results to date (and have even been complemented on the the processed recordings).
