This is definitely interesting news. I have an NH1 but have been toying with buying an RH10 for some of the NH1's shortcomings (display, the proprietary cable, no external battery, etc). I knew a 3rd generation, if it was coming, would have to be announced soon, and was waiting to see what it brought... but I am a bit torn if the 3rd generation is 1 model that's just a tweaked NH1. (RH1 seems to imply 'less than RH10' to me??)
I would assume things like the new bitrates, lossless support, etc, would be added. But I really would like if some of the NH1's shortcomings would be addressed while still making a really top of the line unit. ("Live recording enhancements" is interesting-- could this be the end of the stupid automatic-track-marks-on-silence?)
Hopefully there will be a whole new line, but I do hope the top of the line takes the best aspects of the NH1 + RH10 and makes a killer 3rd gen unit.
Since I have NH1 I had skipped RH10, but because of the rumors of ending MD, I had been looking to buy a RH10 for the few days. I wouldnt mind if the new unit did not have a large display. I just want to hear that MD IS NOT DEAD. AND A DECK!!! HEAR ME SONY. A himd deck with usb and if possible a wifi connection.

I dont even recall showing up here some player models I have seen on audiocubes. I was surprised to see the following mosels:
eh50, eh70, eh930
I've done a search within the forums here with zero return. People are talking about still buying eh1. Anyone got above mentioned models?
My merory was telling me that these were introduced here... Then why search topic returns 0 answers? Anyway they are still missing in minidisc.org's equipment browser... So my topic is still valid.
I used to contribute there (5-6 years ago) with my real name, but it seems that contribution is less nowadays.

This unit and the Sony Anymusic unit released in January only have an FM dial that goes from 76~90, but if your three favorite stations are in the 88 to 89 range then no problem there.
To clarify something implied in the first post, the Sony unit does not play hi-md. The advertising of it does have the "Linear PCM" logo but that has to do with storing on the hard-disc and playing...it does not mean that the md player is hi-md.
I think you are wrong. look at the bitrates, 256 and 64 are HIMD formats.
Machine translation:
40GBのハードディスクにリニアPCM/ATRAC/MP3形式で録音
As for the MD and the CD of course, the FM/AM tuner and the analog sound source, the linear PCM of the CD and homophony quality, the ATRAC of treble quality compression, sound recording is possible with three types of the MP3 whose is widely used. It corresponds to wide music life.
As for the ATRAC, 6 modes of the 256/132/105/66/64/48kbps, as for the MP3 you prepare 5 modes of the 256/192/160/128/96kbps. The sound recording type which is adjusted to use can be chosen.

why all the hatred? no one is sure when or if the plug will be pulled, sonicstage is still being updated & the himd bit got a significant upgrade with the realease of 3.4 - the newer bitrate options.
sure no deck, but the live recording seems to be resurgent.
Hatred? Yes! Not to MD but to Sony. I have been using MD since 1995 (at least 15 different devices). Before that, that was DAT, before Betamax, before.... that goes on ... Sony is the nastiest company in the world. See, my last 2 items were NW-HD1 and HD5. I stuck with first gen HiMD with NH1. Now, where is the support for all these devices? HD5 has seen firmware 1.2, and DONE!!! because Sony dont like its customers. Where is the support for all new bitrates? WHERE IS THE NEW FIRMWARE??? There wont be one, because Sony knows that we are all idiots! we are going to buy new items from them and leave behind our brand new recorders/players, while Archos or Cowon or Creative were releasing new firmwares for their older items. I have spent more than 5 grand on MD technology, equipment and blanks (I still have more than 200MD's in their original packages). I have bought their flagship MDS-JA50ES for $1500 in 1996. I have all the right to curse to Sony. There were no need to abandon MD. where do you find 1GB storage for less than $7... and it could fall if HiMD could survive.
Either Sony will learn to co-exist with the brave new world or it will die.
Thats for sure. If they dont change their way of thinking, if the world cant change them the end is inevitable.

Do you know what truly pisses me off about sony... im my opinion, last March they wasted their chance to save the minidisc format.... how?... Sony PSP!!
All they had to do was make the UMD drive also compatibe with Hi-MD ( i know i know there are diferences between the two, just make the UMDs a little bigger and have the drive have a dual mode like UMD and HiMD/NetMD, kind of how you can play DVDs and record CDs in a PC combo drive) and Normal Minidiscs and add the recording capabilities without increasing the price and the format would had been saved.... or at least gained more momentum.
Sony... YOU PISS ME OFF!!!!!
At least they could have released a full deck and then go to HELL!!!
I could have listened to it and drink to SONY's death.
What a sucker!
How many times Sony has deceived us.
They really deserve more than all the hate they get.

I ripped 3 CD opera @192 to fit in a 80 min MD for the first time. Transfered from NH1 to my desktop easily… OK thats fine, BUT… That one asked me to initialize my HD5 AGAIN!!! Whats wrong with my HD5? Every SS version asked me to initialize the damn thing.
-
My NW-HD5 had come with SS 3.1. When I installed SS 3.2 to my son's computer I had to initialize the my HD5. Thats OK. Now that I am trying to connect it to my PC with SS 3.2 installed it says again that I should initialize it again. Now that I am also upgrading my notebook to SS 3.2 probably it will again ask me to reinitialize the unit. So what is all this thing of easily transfering what you have to any computer. This legend that Sony was letting us to use endlessly our players with any computer we want.
On the other hand I dont see any menu item which will let me to reinitialize the unit. It seems that we all have to first initialize the unit when it is empty with more than 1 PC and start using them. Or not? I dont know but Sony pissed me again. I am not using its damn music server and wont be using it ever. All I want is to be able to transfer music in 3 computers, but I see that it is not possible.

hello
i own a mznh900 and i'm having problems recording on some himd disc. when i playback the recorded songs there are some gaps of silence in the middle of some songs. this is not happening with the old md 80,74,60 discs, only with 1 gb discs. i read a couple of weeks ago a pair of topics about this problem , but i want to know if anybody is having the same problem, or maybe my unit is defective?
tell me your experience. please help
sebastian
Yeah one of the victims is me. It had happened after I recorded a concert, and the disc went mad trashed everything on my return home, and later it did all kinds of nasty things... not quitting the unit is one... gave all kinds of errors which I forgot what now. When it came out I saw that the metal part was slided down, I replaced it but didnt work... then it decided to work again and now it is still working. I dont rely on this one, but I cant prove that it is defective anymore. I think it is better to stay out of the 1 GB discs for a while.

Yes I had to restore an image of my system disk and I didnt want to backup 12gigs of SS data, and I knew that this would happen. SS did the restore operation well, but again the purchased music dont work anymore. Since I am situated outside of US, SS cant get the license (but it did give me access when purchasing), funny huh?
I dont care much, I will use the himd renderer to get those tracks back.

Since most of my SP recordings were made on MD-JA50ES Sony deck from my old Denon 3560 CD player and then from Marantz CD63mkII-KI (Ken Ishiwata's signature on it) I keep all of them (over 250MD's). God! How I used to scan all those CD's covers then shrink them to MD sizes. It took too much time and I cant delete them anymore.
-
I checked LP2, because I had a longer history with NetMD than HiMD. Istarted in 1995 and my archive was of course composed of SP recordings. Then beginning with NetMD I deleted some of them to use more space, still buying more blanks. Now I am using mostly hi-sp, reformatting my LP2 ones, but I still keep some of my old SP recordings.

Welcome back. I had to check over and over if it was working. I cant sleep if I dont check the forum at least twice a day. So, now I'm going to bed.

Sony are very irritating. I bought my R45 then they brought out MDLP. SO I bought my home deck with MDLP and they brought out Net MD. So I then upgraded to the MZ N10 which was fine apart from battery life and - hey, said Sony, what about Hi MD?
So then I changed to the NH1 which is fine apart from an absurdly daft docking station and and having to take aforementioned cradle everywhere to recharge it - so what now?
The RH range with MP3 support, better battery life and a proper docking arrangement.
Being now the owner of 3 portables and a deck it seems unlikely that I'll be able to resist the RH10 for long, just wish I'd not been so quick to buy the NH1 - if I'd known just how irritating the lack of USB connections to the docking station would prove to be I'd have waited longer.
Anyone want to buy a whole stack of MD kit?
My 3 kids were all converts to MD - sadly the sheer convenience of iPod has lost them to the format now, not surprisingly.
I totally share your anger which I had previously expressed here. I have all kinds of MD equipment which had driven my wife crazy for all those past years. She stopped whining when she finally decided that I was nuts. I bought NH1 late august and though it is small and sexy I am tired of carrying its cradle wherever I go. Not to mention I had to format it many times. Last format was made by my son whose notebook did not go on transfering his music unless NH1 had to be emptied. Sony's policy of registering the item over the net doesnt work all times. I understand not transfering back to a computer tracks from another computer, but why not go on transfering other tracks to the item itself. Sony would never listen to its customers and at the end they will go bankrupt. Seen the shares? They had to change the dinasaur CEO!
I am not a mp3 fan, I like ATRAC, but I want unlimited transfers in and out to any computer I want. Until then I decided not to go with any other product from Sony, if it survives. Though new models are shiny, the next and only item will be a HI-MD deck.

I dont know if this is discussed or been noticed yet, but SS 3.0 now puts date and time stamps to my NH1. Up to now this feature was only available with real time recording. This is very good indeed. I havent tried for the optimized files from mp3 but when you burn a CD from within SS 3.0 the stamp appears. Still, the date and time are irrelevant. One of my albums now have year 2000 the other 1994 in their stamps. So my question is: in which step this stamp is made? While transfering the CD into SS, or while transfering the files into NH1? Since previous SS's didnt do that, I presume this is a novelty of SS 3.0. But why not the day when the files were transfered either to SS 3 or NH1?

But I'll still be buying one of the MD cams for my dad... he's gonna freak
Can I be your dad. Promise! I wont freak

Welcome to the 'Untitled Album'-World of SonicStage 3.0.
Solution: Remove it. Install 2.3 again. Restore Library from your Backup.
You do have a current Backup? Do you?
If not, stick with 3.0 and start sorting...
Yes I had a backup which was more than 6gig... short on space I had to delete it hoping to create another backup soon... now its too late.
BTW, what was that album which contained 1656 tracks? I deleted that one too and lost many of my oma files and albums: now they have 0 tracks each. Damn you Sony!!!!!
-
I dont know if this is encoding faster or better, all I know it has messed up all my library. I am a classical listener, and now I see some of my opera albums have been divided into different albums containing 1 track in one the rest in a different album; or concertos in 1 album now scattered in numerous different albums... then again all regrouped in 1 playlist. This is really confusing. Too many entries for 1 album have been created. I havent been too much fan of SS 3.0 since I downloaded and started using it since yesterday. I dont know whether this is the real and final ver. of SS 3.0, but if this is the case, I can say again that Sony should stop writing software.

Yes! I forgot that, still it is bookshelf model not a deck. I still wait to replace my 940 & 50ES
-
That's indeed a very plausible candidate for a future generation, only 1.3MP is _very_ low resolution.
When I compare the DH10P to the RH10 it has been stripped of its inputs and has an added 1.3MP camera. For that I pay $200. For $200 I can buy a pretty decent camera with more megapixels. Depending on DH10P's image quality, a seperate one probably gives much better results.
Still it would be nice to see the cover image of an album while listening to it... but does it really worth the price difference?
-
Since all HI-MD's are the portable ones, what is the necessity of a player only model? A good USB equipped deck is still not in the horizon. So I dont think it is wise to buy a player.
-
This is most brilliant! I would have to call home shortly to order either a black/blue version of RH10.
I totally agree with you, black or blluuee!
Does anyone know... I may have missed the info... whether RH10 is plastic or magnesium. If plastic NO! But I am surely going for that one. I am mad at myself for letting my nephew take my 2d gumstick battery when I gave him my MZ-N1.
I hated the remore, but hey! I always have my NH1's remote. My nephew will eat dust. I wont give that one to anybody.
Still the looks of NH1 is better than RH10, especially the charging craddle.
Is there a charging over USB, like Sony did with NW-HD3?
God! How am I going to wait for this one to be available in Europe!

I like the red
Pitty that the camera is so low-res. 1.3M pixel.. that's like a webcam almost.
Then how Sony will make you buy a 3d generation with 3M pixel?
Bought another RH10 --- 123.73 GBP / 190.61 EUR in UK

How comes Amazon.UK ships electronics outside of UK... or if you are in, how do you get the VAT? I'm a little bit confused here. I wanted to buy from there bıut says ships only in UK.
I see now. That unit is refurbished, and not Amazon's but a reseller's unit.
