The only thing holding me back from Hi-MD is...
The Low Volta replied to Bodacious_happenings's topic in Minidisc
I'm afraid that post probably got lost in the buggy forum upgrade/reverting to an older backup-stuff that happened but I remember something like that as well (even though here in B the 2nd gen has just arrived and some shops still sell 1st gens with "brand new from Sony"-stickers on ) -
I have un-capped my NH900... while it did do something (the volume increases past 25/30, so I can use my big Senn cans) apparently it doesn't give full 5mw as there are some hardware limiters present as well so no, not full 5mw I guess (but I would not have any clue how to measure this ) but enough to be enjoyed over efficient phones (like my pana's) and even with big inefficient ones (the senn HD's) in quiet surroundings at least for the hack, just follow the link in my signature

SonicStage -- R.I.P -- 'CONNECT Player' is born.
The Low Volta replied to Christopher's topic in News
no problem silence it's just that before the problem with the forum upgrade the mods cleaned this thread by putting all off-topic posts (all about the death of MD) in a separate thread (which disappeared as well in the forum-crash) and right after the forums are alive again it starts anew... so silence, please read and add your ideas to this dedicated thread and mods, feel free to clean this one up once again (including deleting my posts of course ) -
The only thing holding me back from Hi-MD is...
The Low Volta replied to Bodacious_happenings's topic in Minidisc
depends on the urgency of your needs and the budget you can spend... - if it's really urgent and you have some money to spend, ord the jap import RH10 and sell it again when the 3rd gen pops up - if you can satisfy your needs without a new one at the moment, I'd wait (this is my situation, as I've got an NH900 right now but I would love the OLED ) -
How to select PCM recording mode on NH900?
The Low Volta replied to soundalike's topic in Live Recording
greenmachine is completely right... just read this as it describes the problems and my solution (I had it repaired by Sony under warranty to keep a long story short) about the no-PCM thing I can't really say what to do, but I'll have a look at my unit later to see whether I can see where the problem could be found -
I once tried to raise my maximal bid (not the one standing at that point) because I had seen the average price of the item (an RM-MC40ELK remote) and wanted to raise my max bid so it would still be just below that... I followed the ebay instructions to do this, and I also had the highest bid at that time... after I raised my max bid, I returned to the item desription to see I had overbid myself by a few dollars... as I was certain I had followed their instructions to the letter, I wrote a very angry email to ebay, complaining about their scam practices. I got a long mail saying how sorry they were and a whole bunch of free extras if I wanted to post something for sale as I don't often buy stuff I do not use, I didn't have anything to sell and I lost the bid as well (to a moronic last minute bidder that paid way too much ) I ended up buying the remote with a buy now offer from buyfromjapan, at a price that was (thank to the position of the dollar to the euro) a lot less and it came brand new, factory sealed within five days (Japan-> Belgium) I like the junk market for the things I can't find in Belgium, but at the same time I dislike so much about it

SonicStage -- R.I.P -- 'CONNECT Player' is born.
The Low Volta replied to Christopher's topic in News
doesn't matter what caused it, but please remember that this is a news thread about the new connect player, not a "I can predict the end of MD/HiMD"-thread ... if you need to vent those feelings, use the search function as there are a bunch of dedicated threads for lamenting the uncertain already... this one's for important news about the new software for ppl who want to enjoy the format as long as it lasts -
I believe dex once explained why UMD technology isn't suited for portable recorders...but I'm afraid my cloudy brain hasn't really stored that info well

need help recording a louuud concert, please
The Low Volta replied to chichiko's topic in Live Recording
hi and welcome to MDCF chichiko, this thread I started a while ago describing my first experiences as a stealth recordist also contain quite a number of things to keep in mind when going for a clean recording... and once the gallery is functional again, be sure to check my Pukkelpop 2005 recordings (stereo omni mics -> batt box -> line in with levels between 20-25/30) BTW, while the NH900's remote does allow you change the rec levels (IIRC) it doesn't show them visually. so there is no indication of clipping etc. The RM-MC40ELK remote (see my signature) does show these and could be a nice rec gadget if you can spare the money... (buyfromjapan sells these on ebay) -
phew... glad it is/we're back! my big thanks to chris et al. for the hard work!!

The only thing holding me back from Hi-MD is...
The Low Volta replied to Bodacious_happenings's topic in Minidisc
please, do not misread my post and start the MD><MP3/HDD discussion again... he is welcome to get into HDD/ipods if he really wants to, no problem at all...I just think that saying "because there is no full sized HiMD deck I will have to transfer to ipod" doesn't make any sense...IMHO -
I'm afraid your looking towards the wrong member there... A440 uses SP-BMC2's, the guy helping you out in this post (greenmachine) is the 'master of DIY-mics'... so just follow the link in my signature (and search for the batterybox one, as I do not know where it is anymore) or perhaps he will have read this and he will post links to that himself

well... stereo, binaural etc... are pretty confusing terms but: the main attention points are: you either have: mono: one channel only... good for upclose recording of one instrument/singerstereo: two channels (L&R) which can differ in the way the stereo image is createdone point stereo mics: both mic elements are in one cover and very close together, which is easy to use but doens't provide that wide a stereo pictureseparable two point stereo (often wrongly called binaural in descriptions): the two elements can be separated and this can give a very good stereo pic (especially depending on the placement)... these can be found easily/cheaply, are very versatile and the choice if you want to record with a nice wide stereo image (and you do not want to wear your mics, see next option)binaural: should actually be reserved for mics that are worn in the ears so their pickup is essentially what you hear (even colored by the shape of your own ears/pinnae)... this is very good for stereo (when listening back over headphones at least) but less versatile as they are shaped quite specificallyfurther... just read this thread, as it explains a lot of the thing the mic descriptions mention and which are/aren't important PS: for DIY mics, just follow the DIY greenmachine mic link in my signature

Help: MD Simple Burner doesn't recognise CD drive
The Low Volta replied to mercurius's topic in Software
merc, I guess we all would like to help... but how can we say anything about your CD-drive, as we do not even know the make/model please post your complete specs and a full description of the problem as stated in the rules -
@pansypistol first of, seemingly someone does care... otherwise there wouldn't be an MDCF... I see a lot of ppl trying to help you (although granted, none of them are paid by Sony) second... if you can get to an internet connection, just download the official installer (with connect) as it does work normally... if it doesn't check your PC and see whether you have followed all instructions in the pinned threads third... you had a working 3.2 but wanted to get SB and installed the standalone to get SB... if you had looked, you would have found the SB installer in the downloads section, there is no need at all for a fresh instal of SS to get it fourth... do you think these big letters and caps will solve your problems? please control yourself a bit so, just do a clean (as described here) install of the net-version of 3.2, once that's installed, install SB2.0 from the downloads section if your PC can handle it (it can, you had a working version!) there is absolutely no reason why this wouldn't work

as I was posting about names... I thought of reviving the avatar thread as well, but with the avatar in question added as an attachment, because it is very frustrating to read this thread as almost everyone has changed avatars since and you have no clue what the descriptions are about so my avatar [attachmentid=871] is an experiment of faces made with some broken lightbulbs born out of boredom

well, as the title suggests, I was wondering about all those fantastic (and less inspired ) member names... how do ppl come up with that diverse range of names...so Where does your member name come from? If in another language (eh, all you Japanese lovin' mods ): what does it (literally) mean? (for all I know you could be called: "I like to have my left shoe for breakfast and a sweaty sock for lunch", even though that might be improbable What other membernames did you have in mind? What other exisiting MDCF-member names here have caught your eye (and why)? (beautiful, interesting, the oposite?)I guess that will be enough questions for one thread (but you can always add more if you have some ideas!)... just start answering guys-n-galls ----------------------------------------------- my answers: it was an adaptation of 'The Mars Volta' (favourite band) and also reflects the fact that I know didly squat about electronics ('Low')... as I started becoming more active, I started using 'Volta' as short just 'cause I'm lazy and do not like to type a lot, but that actually gives the wrong idea as if I'm electronically literate, which isn't the case not applicable (but on ebay I'm 'Lage-Voltage' which is Dutch for 'Low Volta') a bunch of Dutch ones and my nickname with my buds 'Basje' (which is short for Sebastiaan, but is also a more comon name for small dogs ) I like 'Atrain' and 'Dieselducy' as they (if I remember correctly) stem from their early childhoods (Atrain as a mispronounciation of Adrian and Dieselducy as the name of a toytrain... but I'll let them give the correct explanation)now it's your turn...just shoot

I've got my NH900 since december and I've dropped it once, from about 2.5cm/1inch onto the table... and that really is the ruffest I've treated it ever it hardly ever leaves it's caselogic or lowepro (depending on the occasion and accessories I have to carry) bags

HiMD offers HiSP, which can be downloaded from PC at high(er) speeds and sounds pretty much as good as real SP I guess NetMD was a sort of "in between" format, which offers some great ideas (USB) but didn't erally do that much with it
-
hi gartnl, welcome to MDCF... real SP (atrac) is only possible by recording in realtime (line in/mic in/optical in) see this post for a better description of the possibilities
-
Hello Chaicom Man... welcome to MDCF that are quite some questions... here are a couple of answers. - if you plan to transfer your recordings from MD-> PC, you need to realize that only HiMD can do this through USB... older type MD can only rerecord in realtime to PC (read this pinned thread) so, as you've got an MZ-N505, you need to use the realtime method - I dunno about that model you've got there, but HiMD allows on the fly rec level adjustment (without pausing etc.) so I woul say: "keep the mics as cheap as possible (see further recommendations on how to do that) and invest some more money in a (cheap) HiMD model (like the RH910 or NH700/800/900 if you can find them...and the RH10 is the best if you can part with that sum... just watch out for the NH600/RH710 and all models with a D in the name, as they do not have mic inputs or line inputs for some as well) - if you know how to solder yourself (or know someone that can) another member here on MDCF (greenmachine) posted some good instrucions (follow the link in my signature about the greenmachine mics and for the battery box-insructions, use the search function or send greenmachine a PM) on how to make a very cheap but very good mic and battbox (I use them as well, with good results...you can always check the live rec gallery) - if you get the ecm-Ms907, realize that it is a one point stereo mic... and it will not provide the best stereo picture... if you do intend to order from soundpro's, consider the SP-BMC-2-mics as they are very good (A440 has posted clips of them in use) as well and pretty cheap - sony mics have quite a limited frequency range (Frequency Response: 100 - 15,000Hz vs 20-20,000Hz on other mics and for human hearing range as well) so you'll lose some bass and some highs when using the sony one, that you would have when using the soundpro ones or even the greenmachine DIY-mics so have another look around, consider getting a HiMD and some cheap but good mics... there are a number of options hope this helps

The only thing holding me back from Hi-MD is...
The Low Volta replied to Bodacious_happenings's topic in Minidisc
I understand your query about a full-sized HiMD deck and I know there are a LOT of ppl like you dying to give some money to sony ...but... I really can't see any logic in saying - if there isn't any possibility to play my removable HiMD-media in a fullsized high quality deck (eventhough I could "line-out" to an existing amp/hifi-setup) - I will buy some player that doesn't even have any removable media and will only ever allow me to play through a hifi-setup by connecting to the aux/in port or by 'docking' it somewhere just how would that improve audio-quality? *edit: I do not mean to disrespect your opinions at all... I just simply think leaving the MD format or not stepping into the HiMD format in favor of a HDD-based player or ipod (which is your free choice of course) on the ground of not having a real HiMD deck is quite absurd as the alternatives you mention offer no better options (at this specific point) at all -
I do not really know about titling as I do not do this on the recorder (ever) as I find it too much trouble... at least I had never heard of titling leading to errors (though the OMGjbox error does sound like the other errors when a disc was edited) I do know that setting/erasing trackmarks very often leads to errors, but perhaps titling is dangerous as well my technique is to not title on the recorder, just connect to SS, and just title with SS before uploading... that way of titling I have been using for quite a while now and it has never lead to errors! IMHO the safest way to upload is very clearly described right here... just follow this and you will (probably ) be safe

welcome to MDCF, please read this, as this explains the only ways of getting music/recordings from MD/HiMD to PC
