  1. I'd love to see a few pictures as well. I had a couple of nice metal cased Sony auto reverse Cassette Walkmans in the early 80s. Very good sound too, especially when recording on a high end deck with a high bias tape.
  2. I have one RH1 which I have used nearly every day for two years (the silver one) and I have one black RH1 and an M200 still brand new in the box!!! I was trying to find a picture I took last year or the year before of my new unopened blank collection. I have 150 or so unused blanks and at least another 100 used. I hope I can last for a while.
  3. Sounds like it should be list as "Spare parts"!
  4. Wow, that's sweet. I have never seen one other than in the MD browser.
  5. Great picture Soundbox! That unit looks pristine! It is in far better condition than mine!
  6. Another great thing about the N910, it uses the very common gumstick. Multiple reputable battery manufacturers still make them. The N10 has a built in Li-ion which is almost impossible to source and complete bear to swap out (I did it once and I am lucky my N10 still works).
  7. I personally think that the N910 is the pinnacle of NetMD/MDLP portable units. It is basically an N10 in a durable all metal case. Did you get the little dock with it too? I picked a battered N910 unit a few years back, it is a great portable. I can't justify picking one up a nice clean one on eBay as they almost always go over $100 USD. You got a great deal for 10 pounds!
  8. I have done it and it worked fine for me. I only have 22GB though .. :-)
  9. I have a headphone amp designed to drive higher end headphones. My gear is middle of the road compared to the entire spectrum of what is available but it smokes the sound quality of any on-board MD amplifier. I use a HeadAmp model Gilmore Lite which is based on a classic Class A amplifier designed by some noted Electrical Engineering Audiophile a number of years ago. He published the design and many companies have used the design over the years. The amplifier is just a small unit which provides around one watt of power per channel over the full audio frequency spectrum with extremely low distortion. You can read more about this specific model here: HeadAmp - Gilmore Lite. This unit is no longer made and I feel fortunate to have scored one of the last ones made, it cost around $400 USD two years ago. Anything you see on eBay for $20 will not get it, you do get what you pay for when it comes to audio equipment. There are many awesome companies out there manufacturing high end small quantity units in North America and the UK. I use two pairs of higher end headphones (again, not the highest of those available but not something you can get at Best Buy), the first pair are the classic Grado SR325is, and a pair of Sennheiser HD650s. I think I like the Senns the best and they are definitely more comfortable to wear for extended listening. I use this rig entirely at work at my desk, none of it is really portable. Both of these headphones are considered high impedance, i.e. their resistance as a load to the amp at 1000Hz is 300 - 600 ohms. Most small headphones which can be driven by the internal amplifier in an MD player have much lower impedance ranging between 4 and 32 ohms. My Amp is designed to drive a high impedance headphone for the maximum power transfer. The idea is not to be loud but clean and clear (although loud is certainly an option). This rig brings out all of the nuances of an SP recording. I typically drive the input of the amplifier with one of two machines, one of my RH1s with the output set to line or my R50 for superior SP quality via its dedicated line out jack. The sound is really quite amazing. I have a higher end Marantz SR18 receiver which has amazing specs and cost over $3500 ten years ago and its headphone amp cannot touch my Gilmore Lite.
  10. I agree, it is definitely worth more than $20, especially if it works.
  11. I remember reading that same thread, their solution was to run an optical cable from the CD out to the MD in! Sounded crazy. I wonder if they fixed that too.
  12. I have a 10 pack of brand new PRMD 74 blanks. I picked up 12 of them a couple of years ago on eBay and I have used a couple. Then 10 remaining unused are in a Sony cardboard retail box, they're pretty cool. I am willing to sell them. I'll send you a PM.
  13. I bought one used a while back on eBay and the battery was nearly depleted. At the time I was able to locate and purchase a replacement battery. I swapped it out (it was not easy at all, many small parts) and it has functioned fine ever since. Although just as Stephen said, the 910 it the exact same firmware and feature set in a package which accepts easier to source and swap gumstick batteries and it also uses a standard mini USB connector. With the N10, loose the special cable and your screwed. I do not think the units are rare at all, I see them on eBay all of the time, anyone who pays over $100 for one doesn't know what they are getting into ...
  14. And Mellencamp is so damned talented, a recording like that would be a real treat. Thanks for sharing your thoughts pc, I may take a look at amazon for this recording. I wonder if there is an LP vinyl version. I would not be able to play it, but I bet it would impart more of the true essence than the sampled version.
  15. Not for me, I have several hundred unused blanks and probably 150 with music recorded on them. If I live long enough to run out of blanks, I'll just start recording over older stuff!
  16. Congrats adept777! I hope it reaches you quickly and in great condition!
  17. Two 8 ohm speakers in parallel produce a 4 ohm load, most amps should be able to handle that. However if you had two 4 ohm speakers in parallel the resulting 2 ohm load may be seen as a short to the amp. You are lucky the amp has protective circuitry built in, you could have smoked it ...

    NW A1200 too old?

I don't recall the details of the NW A1200 but I am sure that replacing the battery if you can source the correct item would not bee to difficult to do. I replaced the battery in my NW-HD1 a year or so ago and it has worked like new ever since. You'll need to open the unit and remove the battery to get the exact part number. Youmay be able to find it on eBay. If you are lucky, the battery will be the same as that of some other portable units and there may be multiple sources.
  19. LOL! Exactly, first it will erase the original and then smoke all of the hardware!
  20. I am surprised that Sony allows a pre-recorded MD to be uploaded via USB. As up tight as they are about uploading anything transferred down to an MD via NetMD process it strikes me as odd ... Just a thought, I have never tried it.
  21. bluecrab, I saw that 780 also. What a sweet machine, I was not "watching" it so I did not see the final sale price, wow 410 bucks. That's crazy! I am certain that the 20ES has a better mechanism however and likely weighs two or three times as much ... Same for the 333ES. My 940 seems like a feather when compared to my 20ES.
  22. Welcome back for sure Philster! We have a great little community here with a wealth of knowledge in all things MD. Check out the downloads section for the most recent and possibly final version of SonicStage Connect Player 4.2 Ultimate. This will install and run great on Windows 7 64 bit, it will also read and write to HiMD as is. In order to get the install to recognize, and give you normal full support for NetMD, you'll need to also download the NetMD driver package NETMD760. There is a thread here in the forums relating to the installation of this package. Basically, you should not plug the NetMD device into your machine until you have extracted the driver to a known location, then direct the driver installer to that location. If it finishes looking for a driver and fails before you can redirect it, you'll need to go into the device manager and locate the unknown USB device, drill down on it and locate, update driver, point it at the extracted drivers and it should pick it right up. Let us know if you have any issues! Welcome to the forums!
  23. Yep, D4 and D40 are both missing the optical out according to the MD browser. I was on a similar quest a few months ago and I found a really nice MXD-D400 on eBay for around $225 USD. The unit was in nearly new condition with all original packaging and accessories (remote, manual, cabling, etc) It really is a great combo deck, I love it and use it fairly regularly. Just keep searching on eBay every day, you'll score one eventually. For me it only took about 10 days for the unit I bought to appear. I had to pop on it right away however as I did not want someone else to grab it. I was fortunate that the unit had a buy it now option. Good luck in your search!
  24. That's pretty sweet, thanks PhilippeC! I ordered a remote from that same source several years back as a replacement for a Philips television. If I recall, they were a reliable retailer.
