Hey guys
I just found this article on Sony's German webpage.
It clearly states that you can also download Music onto the MZ-RH1 with the Mac software.
It also says something about a vertical jogdial (to search for songs by title artist,..).
I don't know what they mean by that, probably the button you can push up and down.
There is some confusing picture with it but it's a bit small:
At least it would mean the display also shows the track title which is very important from my point of view.
Or can anyone explain me how to use the "line out" function without seeing the track titles among 50-500 songs?
edit: I'm not sure about the downloading modes on Mac.
It might only work with WAV

Winamp plugin is here.
Ouh man, I must have missed that..
Haven't been much on the forums for the last time.. *cough*
Thanks for that.
My honors to whomever? created and uploaded that one..
-
Really cool new version..
Now I am able to recover some songs that were trapped only on Hi-MD..
The ones on normal MD it seems they still have to wait..
So now there are not many things missing regarding MD + Computer:
The most wanted for me are:
1. easier handling of files which means:
a)auto update library
b)removing files from library on DEL
c)adding files with drag and drop
2. direct support for other audio formats - best case with plugins because it's the only way to make sure everyone can use the format of his/her choice.
3. finally a way to play my ATRAC files back in other applications - whether through a release of the codec or by writing a plugin at least for winamp and wmp because these are the most common players
thanks in advance ;-)

Count me in!
options: whatever (I may prefer Hi-MD for tagging reasons)
but i have to admit I don't have every song in PCM quality if that matters for recording mode..
I listen to many types of music so (But it shouldn't be usual pop, usual techno, or gangsta rap)
Your disc would be around (at least?) 50% metal (mainly the melodic genres)
PS: that has been the best news for ages

Will you accept PayPal as a payment method?
I live in Germany

Yeah great the forum is working again.
Big hooray for all who worked on it.

unfortunately I lost an unread PM. If the one who wrote it could send it again..

I understand your query about a full-sized HiMD deck and I know there are a LOT of ppl like you dying to give some money to sony
...but...
I really can't see any logic in saying
- if there isn't any possibility to play my removable HiMD-media in a fullsized high quality deck (eventhough I could "line-out" to an existing amp/hifi-setup)
- I will buy some player that doesn't even have any removable media and will only ever allow me to play through a hifi-setup by connecting to the aux/in port or by 'docking' it somewhere
just how would that improve audio-quality?
*edit: I do not mean to disrespect your opinions at all... I just simply think leaving the MD format or not stepping into the HiMD format in favor of a HDD-based player or ipod (which is your free choice of course) on the ground of not having a real HiMD deck is quite absurd as the alternatives you mention offer no better options (at this specific point) at all
Aren't the most people in here saying things like "Use MD for recording otherwise get an mp3-player"?
-
Ask for the NH900 and new warranty or/and the RM-MC40ELK.
Because otherwise it would be a "lower end" model.
That's what i would try.
-
Sorry to say, but it is a pitty for all the new 2nd Gen MD users, if Sony bring out some new devices in like another month or so, that can use this new CONNECT PLAYER, and can record n stuff...
Maybe they are still working on the details of the MD part. It makes a lot of sense:
In these times you shouldn't wait throwing your stuff on the market; but also they
didn't wanted to give away another half finished program. Why else would they have
named it different? Too many people hearing the word "Sonicstage" think negative
of it. You can't get rid of it anymore (sad but probably the same with MD). So they
developed the MD part at last: The last version works stable enough to work with.
Better give Sony the time to come out an excellent MD program. Isn't that what you
all want? I'm sure we get it.
-
<s>Maybe they bring out a new version supporting (Hi-)MD with the 3rd generation. Or</s> an advanced version since not many people use MD, but a completely different programm wouldn't make that much sense
-
as Dex explained earlier in this same thread
so it is due to the medium itself: the HiMD disc needs to be heated etc... to write data/music, so you simply can't 'speed up' that process... using USB2 to flood the internal processor with more data wouldn't help anything, as it simply can't be used/written away any faster... so forget 'faster data-HiMD' (unless you would install a 1gb ram ) and use it for what it was intended: live recording, not data storage... that's what we've got flash-sticks/ portable HD's for
(even though you can of course use HiMD for data storage, but stop whining about the slow write speeds)
I understand about the writing speed with the magnetic layer has to be
heated to change the magnetic property (south or north).
But sorry I was only talking about the reading speed.
Because while reading the disc has not to be heated up (since the data won't be
changed) but it is read by laser only. If i recall correctly the degree in which the
layer reflects the light (laser) is slightly different between the north polarisation and
the south polarisation. That's how it differates "0" and "1".
So I still see absolutely no reason why the reading speed could not be
increased.
BTW.: Speed is not one of my primary concerns.
Since I use it for playback as a main purpose I would probably be out of MD otherwise
-
No? FOr example, a CD can be read at 1, but also at 2 and 4 and 48 speed. Even at .1 speed. It all depends on how the manufacturers define how the hardware handles the disc. In HiMD's case, speed wasn't the primairy point.
Hmm...
And why is this not possible with MD/Hi-MD?
Or is it just because they don't build in a more powerful motor for given reasons
i.e. it's likely to be done in a possible internal computer drive?
-
Nope. And that's the point.
I don't understand that point. MD is read by a laser so it should be possible to read it around the speed of a CD, shouldn't it?
And: Today i read on buffalo's site their MD unit supports USB2 at full speed.
-
I have a virus on my computer so it doesn't work properly.
cheap windows/computer rubbish
besides: unfortunately this is true
-
Are these the new crystal blue ones?
-
Not the best protection against sunlight.
So you probably have to go for the HHB discs.
They have a UV coating layer plus 10 times lower block error rate
-
the track should be longer than 8 sec with lp4 since this is the smallest cluster it writes (SP 2sec; lp2 4sec) which means each track needs at least the space of 8sec.
But i guess that's not the problem you have.
How about Hi-MD?

What Would You Like To See In 3rd Gen Hi-md?, suggestions, requests, etc.
How about user programmable buttons on the unit as well as on the
remote. At least one or two of them so every user can fast access the
menus/functions he needs the most. But please then make it accessible
to every function. Even like 'type an "a"'.
Someone might need it if he wants to title the tracks like this:
1. a
2. aa
3. aaa
who knows?

I have written this post because of misran who wrote me a PM asking about a review
between MZ-N1 and MZ-NH1. I meant to PM him back but then the message got
longer and longer and so i decided it might interest someone else.
This is not about the common (dis)advantages between Hi-MD and standard MD
there are thousands of threads about it. This one is about the detail differences
between the MZ-N1 and the MZ-NH1.
First of all I own my MZ-NH1 unit since april '05.
Recently I had to send in the remote because the Vol+ button didn't work anymore.
As an overall review I liked the N1 more than my NH1.
Which brought some hassle since you can not access all the functions
on the unit and the display on the unit won't show the track titles!
What I liked more with my N1 was
the wheel on the unit (on the NH1 you have a wheel on the remote which is also
cool),
the display on the unit (3 lines over 1 line),
the battery life is far worse and neither expandable
(no battery pack) nor exchangeble (ok it is but it's some proprietary
Sony lithium which would cost me 60€).
The USB cable is also propietary so you are better not going to waste it but worse
with that is you have to carry it along with you.
Besides you can only charge while the unit is in the cradle and only connect to the
computer without a cradle (considering you don't import the world
tourists/japanese cradle).
to be fair I should mention that the N1 connects the computer while in the cradle...
About the build quality I would say the units are around the same if not the NH1 superior.
Judged by the case: The metal seems more solid and maybe thicker even though
the unit is smaller (but a bit larger).
The hold and open button seem better quality on the NH1 (they both broke with
my N1 - the hold button even twice).
When I first got my NH1 I didn't like the remote very much. On the one hand
because I needed to exchange the pocket I carry it with me from left to right. I
think the display on it should be vice versa (including the buttons on the upper
and lower side).
On the other hand I liked the jog dial on the stick remote of the N1 because it's
much easier to skip tracks and turn the Volume up and down while riding the
bike. First I barely do anyways but it easily happens by accident with the NH1's
remote if you have hold switched off or want to press the skip button down to
enter a menu. I even went so far to use my old remote in the first place but since
its not fully compatible eg. some buttons functions exchanged or with even no
function, I got used with the new remote. Nowadays I like it really much.
About the quality: Even though my N1 broke several times on me I would say it's
made of good quality. Why? Lets give me a proof: I can compare it to my mobile
phone since it is exposed to nearly the same influences. (yes I know mobile
phones are very poor quality but anyways). I have my mobilephone in one bag of
my trousers and the MD in the other. Like this I'm riding my bike nearly everyday
no matter what weather it is. So both these electronics are exposed to sweat,
rain, heat, coldness, vibrations (and sometimes even a crash ).
My mobilephones are giving up full functionality after 3 -6 months, after A year I
could not sell it anymore and after that I am the only person who will be able to
use it because its damaged so much. The MD simply rocks and rocks. I gave my
old unit to a friend and he's quite happy with it. I could not sell it in the end
also because the display on the main unit was broken but that was after 3 years and not after 1 year.

Don't know which one you're looking for, but here are some odd md data devices:
whhhoooaaa
I wanna see these shiny things with hi-md
I believe there were MD Audio recorders for the PC, but they were only available in a very limited selection of Sony Vaio PCs and Notebooks. Thanks for the replies guys. Any ideas what the model number was?Model Number is PCGA-MDN1.
I found a shop for Germany:
http://www.directshopper.de/sony-vaio-pcga...ttenlaufwerke_p its 200 Euros:
[attachmentid=780]
I am not sure but it may only fit into these NV series notebooks:
[attachmentid=781]
This seems to be a special interface you can use for several things like a num-block, data drives,.. :

If Sony would give 5 years of guaranty
That is a very good idea, or even better just make the units higher quality.
I had to send mine (also MZ-N1) in for 4 times (or at least parts of it):
3 times because of the ribbon cable, at least i guess, and 2 times because the remote didn't work properly. After the warranty was gone It broke more and more.
Crazy me anyways bought an MZ-NH1, since I could not find an alternative which suits my need altough I am using it mainly as a playback unit.
which might also be due the fact I am still hoping for some decks and car units.
Are you listen, Sony?
SS = Silly Sony

I do have one disheartening story. On the way to a Johnny Cash concert some years ago, I managed to sneak everything in but the &!@!*& microphone. I left it in the car -- couldn't believe it. What could I do? I enjoyed the show. Mr. Cash then died and that was it. I've been kicking myself ever since.
Why didn't you use your headphones instead? Or didn't you have them with you?
-
USB2 wouldn't make any difference, HiMD doesn't even use the full capacity of USB1.1... it's not the transfer that is slow, it's the writing process itself
So would the upload (reading speed) be faster?

SonicStage CP 4.0

How about putting the Installer that comes with the Player off it's CD and then online?
Once I also had a problem installing SonicStage (It might have even been OpenMG Jukebox).
I believe it was when I wanted to update my Computer crashed during installation.
When I rebooted my Computer I could neither install anymore nor uninstall.
The problem remained until I went to the registry deleting all entries referring to Sony/Sonicstage manually. (It took my about 2 or 3 hours )
But after that procedure the installation worked flawlessly.
So this is what you could do:
- Uninstall via System Settings \ Software
- Searching for Remaining Folders/Files of Sonicstage
(Program Files\Sony, Settings and Documents\All Users\Application Data\SonicStage, Settings and Documents\"your username"\Application Data\SonicStage;
the folder "Application Data" is usually hidden.
There might be some other folders, these are just the ones that came to my mind;
use the search function in Windows Explorer)
- Go to the registry ( "Start" -> "Run" -> "regedit")
and search for remaining entries/subgroups containing the word Sony (use the search function "Ctrl" + "F").
But be aware: You could damage your Windows Installation if you delete the false entries.
But if you have no other Sony Hardware/Software installed nor do you own a Sony Computer you should have no problem finding the right registry keys to delete.
I'm sorry If not all the commands and folder names are right but my Windows Installation is German therefore I could only guess them.
I hope I this helps you anyway if not someone comes up with an easier solution.
Good Luck
