  1. My apologies for not crediting anyone who has previously mentioned something to the effect that I have. I've seen it in various threads so I decided to rehash it and create a thread that you could find in a quick search. As always, kudos to each and every one of the contributing members of these forums. My personal MD experience would be, frankly, defunct without the resource of all the members. Sad to say, however, that my NH900 broke and I'm now in with the dark side (30 GB iPod). If I get some extra dough, I'm going to buy a new HI-MD player. I just want SonicStage to be 'industry standard.' Thanks all! MD for life. Well maybe.
  2. I was ARRESTED for going 115 in a 65 (allegedly). I drive a friggin Toyota Echo 2000. I was going 80-85, I swear. I have no clue how people manage to get away with tickets when my rear end ended up in a jail for 27 hours. $6,000 later, I'm cleared. Sigh. Anyways, I'm thinking of getting me one of these new bad-boys. My NH900 fell on concrete and broke. I couldn't put it back together. And I was in a fit of rage at the time over SonicStage and its infinite ineptitude. So I threw it out. Got myself a 30GB Video iPod (yea yea, heresy). But it ain't got nothin' on recording. MD for life. Well maybe.
  3. So after reading through the forums for hours and hours (thanks to everyone, this is truly an awesome group of people), I've found a workaround for the infamous importing of a compilation album or soundtrack album into SonicStage (you know, how it creates an individual album for each artist in your compilation album and fails to create a 'Various Artists' or 'Compilation' album). I'm a nut. I like my ID3 tags to have the real artist listed as the artist and not 'Various Artists' or anything like that. Somehow, my logic isn't that bad. Other 'music managers' can handle a directory with different files in it and treat it as a compilation (Can anyone say Winamp? iTunes? Sonique? Need I say more?) Thanks to a thread or two I saw earlier, I've realized the way to make SonicStage realize that you've got a compilation or a soundtrack album is to: 1: Change the View to 'All Tracks.' 2: Highlight the tracks desired to be in a compilation. 3: Right click. 4: Click Properties (yes, you can click it when you're viewing all tracks). 5: Hit the box that says 'Tracks in the compilation albums.' You'll get some random warning about assigning the same artist to all files. Ignore. Now your compilation album will actually be listed as a compilation album. Tears of joy. So that's not new information. Here's my tip: 1: METICULOUSLY organize your files and tag them correctly with whatever program you prefer (I use MP3-Library). 2: Put ALL your compilation CD's (even that stuff from one artist mixing a bunch of others) into a single folder. 3: Empty your library in SonicStage (the fastest way is to find the access files in Documents&Settings and kill it). 4: Import just that folder that you created above. 5: Do the process detailed above, but select ALL THE TRACKS. 6: Wait about a year or two as SonicStage sorts out which songs belong in which 'compilation album.' 7: Go to the Albums view and be full of joy as you notice that all your compilations are in single albums, from SonicStage's perspective. I was so very close to getting an iPod and dropping my wonderful NH900 into the trash bin because of the ineptitude we call SonicStage . This workaround might just keep me going until Sony develops a simpler, smarter music manager. I'm not asking for drag/drop (that would make me cry). I'm not asking for disavowing all DRM (that too would make me cry). All I ask for is a decent SonicStage. I want to brag to my friends about how much better my entire portable music experience (from hardware to software) compared to theirs. Sigh. I can barely brag about the hardware these days. MD for life. Maybe
  4. I've got some basic PHP skillz and barely any reverse engineering skillz so I'm gonna answer: Not sure. My guess is, it shouldn't be so bad. Particularly since SonicStage now can transfer files without DRM. However, I've got an NH900 and SonicStage still converts files to ATRAC. Newer players can transfer native MP3. So, it seems, that it's not just the software that dictates how the computer talks to the player/recorder. Hardware might be involved. All I know is, if someone does come out with a plugin for Winamp, I would BUY it. I've been so frustrated with SonicStage's 'My Library.' MD for life. Maybe.
  5. First off, big fan of MD right here. I'm a DJ and now that SonicStage 3.4 is out, I have tons more flexibility in how I work with my music. My primary feature request may be resolved by the recommendations stated earlier, but I think I should say it outright. I have hundreds of compilation CD's (Trance music, Techno, Rap, you name it). I've ripped them as MP3's a while back. When I import into SonicStage, each music file is given its own Album (being that SonicStage prefers to sort by Artist rather than by Album). All I ask for is a better algorithm in which the software recognizes a folder with music files by different artists and interprets that as a SINGLE album with multiple artists. Other music players/managers seem to do this just fine (i.e. Itunes, Winamp, etc.). If the Library in SonicStage was more flexible and easier to use, I would personally market the MD has the true Ipod killer.
  6. That's not a bad idea at all. If all else fails, I'll start doing that. My dream come true: if Sonicstage's Library would act like Winamp's or Sonique's or any other modern and streamlined media player. These programs are smart enough to see a folder full of music files and assume that it's a compilation. Especially if the tags in the folder all have the same Album. Oh well. My fingers are crossed for the fall. If Sony's Connect gets better, Sonicstage HAS to. Maybe we'll all benefit from a better, fitter, faster Sonicstage. Thanks a bunch for the suggestion!
  7. So I'm trying to find an INI file or some other hack to let me put in an integer larger than 150 into Nero's Overburn preferences. If anyone has an idea, let me know!
  8. So I'm not a huge uploader of my own music anymore (I used to do that on a feverish level with NetMD), but I do have around 80 gigs of music. I used to be a DJ and have around 4,000 CDs FLACed on my machine, so it's all legal With 3.1, when I 'Scan Folders' to get all my music in the Library, about 3 hours would ensue. And then my compilations would be totally out of whack (that's on another thread). Compilations are still annoyingly and frustratingly out of whack. But Sonicstage 3.2 imported all my music in 16 minutes. Wow. Overall, Sonicstage seems to be using less system resources (OMGJBOX.EXE often used around 30-40% of my CPU when transferring music to a disc, now uses around 20-25%). It seems faster (this may just be a perception issue) when transferring to a disc. In terms of downloading from a disc, I was able to record about 5 minutes of random noise (it rained quite nicely here yesterday, and it sounded good) and transfer it to my library with ease. I then zapped the file, rebooted, and downloaded again with no issues. This brings tears to my eyes. Life was literally horrible for me in the past with the downloading limits. Thank you Sony! And thank all of you! These forums are very informative and helpful. Good to know that I'm not the only one in the world that wants this NH600 in my hand to do a million things more than it already can. All I know is, MD all the way.
  9. Rock on raintheory. I most appreciate your advice. I'll look into the burning options and post another reply or an edit.
  10. So I'm interested in rapid ways of importing a large group of MP3's into SonicStage. I have literally thousands of CD's and a few hundred of them are compilations or mix CD's. Compound that with thousands of MP3's meticulously organized and tagged. I've tried importing into SonicStage with suggestions from this forum but I can't get the compilations to be organized in a specific folder in 'My Library.' Until SimplerBurner for HI-MD comes out, I'm stuck either real-time recording optically with a media player or stuck using SonicStage. So I had a couple of ideas but I wanted some opinions from you fine MD folk. 1: SonicStage can seemingly import M3U files. As much as I hate the fact that it still pollutes the Library with the files disorganized (i.e. the Album is fine but it's replicated as many times as you have a different artist, so you end up with the same Album 12 times [if your mix collection is 12 songs]), I do appreciate the fact that you can view the Library by Playlists. Is there a way to create M3U files rapidly through a collection of MP3's? A batch process of some kind? I primarily use Winamp to play my music and it has a neat 'Write Playlist(s)' function, but this creates a file called 'album.m3u' in the directory of the MP3 files. Plus, the references in the file are relative and not absolute. So even if you renamed the file and moved it, the references would be wrong. What I want to do, as you can see, is import M3U files of all the folders of music I have on my computer. At least, then, SonicStage treats them as Playlists (even though the Library is full of the files). So instead of using the Library, I can use the 'Playlists' in the Library to transfer. 2: The original SimplerBurner concept was great. It created multiple Nero images as the filesize maxxed out. Is there some goofy way to fool Nero into thinking that 1 GB is the right size for an audio CD? If that is possible (I doubt it of course), then I can use Nero (+ ImageDrive) and transfer the image easily. Well, I do apologize for the long post. But I've been reading these forums for a few weeks now and you guys just plain rock. And I think we all share the same dreams and hopes for MD. All I know is, MD all the way.
  11. In a nutshell, Sony is a modern-day Hydra. I hope the new (non-Japanese) head can slay this beast and phoenix it into a more robust and focused company. Maybe we will see great MD products/solutions from Sony in the future. I, for one, do believe that a large group of people working for Sony have their weight behind MD. But all this refocusing and realignment may result in MD taking a back-burner to flash players and other tech. The good news, I think, is Connect. They truly understand the debacle that is Connect and Sonicstage. Maybe one day we can all use a Sonicstage that is fast, that organizes albums as we wish, that has less DRM, and (this one annoys me the most) lets you queue songs before it starts transferring. All I know is, MD all the way.
  12. Real quick question. I have the famed (or infamous) NH900. I want to get the NH-14WM battery. However, I find 'Stamina' versions and non-'Stamina' versions. They both seem to be at 1.2v and 1400mAh. Any clue as to the difference? The Stamina ones are black, the non-Stamina ones are gray. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
  13. Someone (a coworker) dropped a jar on my NH900 and made a dent on the top edge (about 1/4 inch above the LCD). I had to take the sucker apart to 'unbend' the metal. It still has a scar. But it works fine. What I did notice, however, is the fact that you could dent the thing. That means some hollow space. So I had an idea of getting an LED, stashing it in there and wiring it to some power source. Heck, I was ready to take apart a solar calculator and get started. Then school and work hit me. But it's a thought. You wouldn't be truly backlit, but ghetto-style lit like those old watches (pre-Indiglo). The only technical hurdle I can think of is how to store solar energy. Or, can you draw enough power from the battery? Without interrupting the power supply to the main circuitry? I wish I could get my hands on broken models to play with. But work and school Any geeks out there (trust me, that's not an insult, but a compliment, these forums have helped me out immensely => I have a love/hate relationship with Sony because of MDs and you guys heal the frustration) that can figure this out, it's an idea. I think it's definitely possible to have some lighting in the chamber above the LCD. There are thin gaps where light can flow down and out. Good luck!
