  1. Tom, trust your ears if it works for you then it works, don't worry about what you should or should not be hearing by transcoding. Recently I have started to use HiLP for portable listening and I get on fine with it but a lot of people on the forum would argue that this bitrate is too low for music - it's not whether they're right or wrong it's about what I'm comfortable with. Happy listening. Jon
  2. I don't have one and I don't think I'll get one, partly because of the cost and partly because I already own an RH10 which serves me well. I would be interested if they released a lower spec version which would enable me to do the legacy uploading.
  3. Yes, I have noticed the same thing. I bought my RH10 18 months ago for £150 ish and a used RH910 went for £155 last week! It could be people like me who already own Hi MD units but feel insecure about their possible disappearance buying them. I've also been looking at getting a hd3 or hd5 and the price of these are holding up very well also.
  4. Many thanks for the advice everybody!
  5. A work colleague has lost the side carriage for her rh 910 (it was stolen along with other stuff). Anybody got a spare, or advice where to get another, (I appreciate it's a long shot but maybe someone has a broken rh 910/10 and they've kept the spares). We're UK based. Any advice appreciated.
  6. My understanding is that if you transfer from HiMD to PC in SS and you go to settings and tick the 'transfer as is' option then it will not recompress the recording. It will not export as a WAV if you uncheck the dialogue box that appears when you start uploading. You can always export the file as a WAV at a later stage by right clicking on the file which will give you the option. Your Hi LP recording can then be downloaded to a separate disc without recompression (again you need to tick the 'transfer as is' option). My knowledge of SS and HiMD is fairly basic, it may be corrected by more skilled members of the forum
  7. The problem is that you cannot upload net MD recordings to the PC even with the recent edition of sonic stage. When you get the 910 which is a hiMD you will be able to upload recordings made with the 910 to the PC and then you can right click on the tracks and export them as WAV files to the PC and use them as you'd like. The new Rh1 that is coming out soon is capable of uploading net MD recordings but I doubt you'll want to get this as you've just bought the 910. There are ways of uploading the recordings in real time using software such as audacity, I've done this with net MD recordings. You could also try recording from the 707 to the 910 and then you could upload the old recordings but again this would involve realtime recordings.
  8. In a recent episode of the Archers (BBC radio soap opera) Fallon Rogers daughter of Jolene who runs the pub with Sid was heard to say something along the lines of, 'hang on I'll just get my mini disc' for an interview she's doing on a local history project. Okay it's not on TV and it's not actually real but it's MD in the media!
  9. Hi ljadkins, thanks for the info, I'll try out these features soon, I have previously only used audacity for voice recordings. Jon
  10. Hi ljadkins, any chance of a brief guide to cleaning up and normalising in audacity or point me to a link. Thanks, Jon.
  11. Graham, can you advise on the best way to browse the Argos site. The only way I can find stock is to add the item to the basket and then check stock at stores one at a time, is there a way it can display where the items are stocked. Couldn't find the NH1 but noticed they had HD5's for £99 (couldn't find anywhere stocking them though)
  12. I'd definitely buy a deck, I'd don't need (I doubt if I could afford) top end pro equipment. I just want a decent quality machine that I can plug my discs into without faffing around with leads all the time, I can operate from a remote without getting up and down to hit tiny buttons, something I can record music and radio in real time. As somebody else has made the point, what's the point of removable media if you can only use it in one piece of equipment. I have been starting to think about one of the Onkoyo units but I don't want to get one if there is any chance that Sony will bring one out in the UK. I would like a car deck but I'd really struggle to justify the cost, it's not an area I've spent money on really but I think they should make one. Ok, I'm off to vote!
  13. Are you just talking portables or can we rule out a deck
  14. Is the line out/headphone port a genuine line out or is it just like the RH10 headphone port but rebadged as a line out.
  15. I was disappointed there was no line out on the RH10 but at the risk of sounding ignorent, what's the difference between a line out (optical or digital) and the headphone jack. If line out gives a better sound through a hi fi then I might consider getting the new machine, especially if a deck doesn't appear.
