Glad to see the forum has recognised this. I wasn't quite sure if the email I've jsut recieved from Sony was an elaboarate phishing scheme. The message references Gracenote's webpage: http://www.gracenote.com/corporate/FAQs.ht...security/page=0 And provides a link to the v3.3/3.4 patch if anyone is interested: http://news.connect-europe.com/I?a=A9X7Cqn...D8St3aqI0ThHj6w

Spotted instructions on how to bypass a broken ribbon elsewhere on the site: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=4712&st=0 If I do give it a go it will be the second Sony device I've opened up in a month after my PS2 started growling and stopped reading discs (thankfully now fixed). Despite (or maybe because of?) my MD's age, I'm reluctant to be rid of it. It seems as if it has only been in the last year or so, since I discovered this forum, that I've really started to get the best out of it (new versions of Sonic Stage, new gumstick battery, better headphones, more time at the gym and on public transport...). I think if I do get another personal music player it will be a flash device, fewer moving parts! Does anyone have an application that can convert ATRAC files into .mp3 or similar? Thanks for your comments and tips.

Hi Majestic, I have an mz-n910 and have recently noticed the symptoms you describe: no recorded data after removing and re-inserting disc, regardless of recording input (optical, Sonic Stage, line in). Do you (or does anyone) have a photo of the broken ribbon? After searching the forum for "blank disc" another thread suggests there could be a problem with the recording head. Does anyone have any more ideas about the problem and how to fix it? My MD is 5 years old.

Volta (and also Paul), Thanks for clarifying this. I too enjoyed Ratazzi's paper.

Hey Greg, I faced this problem as well a few weeks ago. In case you (or anyone) every encounter it again, Microsoft has instructions on how to sort it out here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321186/en-us My latest action? I've just installed Firefox and Thunderbird to run my new Nerdshack e-mail address.

Cheers Rotter, What's the author on about then? I'm confused!

This may be a dumb question, but after reading this paper I have to ask: can pre-Hi-MD units play Hi-MDs? "In 2004, Sony completely reinvented MD with the launch of the Hi-MD system. Hi-MD quintupled the storage capacity of standard MD media to 1GB by reducing the size of the disc’s magnetic domains. Backward playback compatibility with older media is maintained through the use of Domain Wall Displacement Detection (DWDD), an innovative technique patented by Sony. DWDD allows longer-wavelength playback lasers, like those used in earlier units, to also play the new higher-density media." (underlining my own)

Hello, OS: Windows XP home Software: Sonicstage v3.3 MD: MZ-N910 Problem: Unable to upload tracks from several different MDs to PC. Receive error message 000065c7 which claims that the tracks originate from another PC even though they do not! Problem seems to occur only on specific MDs/tracks. It appears not to affect tracks I ripped from CD fairly recently (possibly since upgrading to v3.3 six months ago). Do other users recognise this problem/diagnosis? Is there any solution apart from re-ripping all my pre-v3.3 tracks? Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated. PS: I have found a workaround to clear my MDs by deleting the tracks instead of uploading them.

Hello, I'm new to this forum and network and was wondering despite all this (admittedly fascinating) speculation, whether there's been a clear announcement from Sony about the future of the MD. Are formats killed in a neglectful silence or with grand fanfare? Any ideas / links / historical perspectives? Cheers, jrcoup
