  1. Hey all, quick question on the new Sony X Series. In the NC options, it gives you the option to set the NC level anywhere from -15 to 15. What exactly does this do? Increase the amount of noise cancellation? That's what I'm thinking but I'm just trying to make sure. It really is an amazing Walkman.

  2. Hey all! I'm clearing out my stock of Walkman to get some cash for the new NWZ-X1051. I have listed the following on ebay.

    RM-MC40ELK remote: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=150366445046

    NW-E005 New Open Box: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=150366423624

    MZ-N505 w/ 2 new blanks: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=150366427839

    NWZ-A728: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=150366413657

Feel free to email me at supernes81@gmail.com or PM me with any questions. I also have a NW-HD1 that I haven't listed on ebay with all original accessories and box if anyone is interested.

    Thanks for looking!

EDIT - HD1 is sold! Ebay items only now.

  3. The demise of CONNECT taught me an important lesson:

DO NOT BUY DIGITAL RESTRICTED MUSIC, ANYWHERE, EVER

It makes me ill to think of the hundreds of dollars I wasted on CONNECT downloads. Never again! Archive to CD is their solution to save the files, but if I wanted the music on CD I would have bought CD in the first place, duh.

The message at Canadian CONNECT store says that the authentication servers are only up until December 31 2008, so what happens after that when I want to/need to restore my library?! Most of my music files are .oma and with 'Copy Protection: Available' since certain VAIO programs won't work otherwise. At least their MP3 Conversion Tool will transcode those files, since they aren't bought from CONNECT (tested it).

What I don't understand is why this is an 'either/or' situation for Sony. Why does atrac & SonicStage need to be dumped completely in North America in favour of Windows Media Player and protected .wma? Why not have both possible on the same device? Why do lawyers and marketing people have such influence over Sony product decisions?! I would have been really happy being able to use SonicStage AND Windows Media Player with the same device.

I did buy one of the newer "open" players to try out, and I do like it for use with a service like Napster etc. It's very convenient, although of course songs with WMA DRM won't play on PS3 when connected duh. I think the next Walkman I get will be an import from Japan where they still use atrac and SonicStage.

That's if I don't get further annoyed by more brilliant changes from Sony.

Agree 100%, couldn't have said it better myself. Why couldn't sony release the new walkmans with both WMP and SS support? Allowing those who want to use ATRAC and SS to do so, and those who want to use MP3 and other formats with WMP to do so as well. That would have been perfect and satisfied everyone. Instead they kill ATRAC and SS and force thousands of loyal customers to switch. I hate WMP so far and the entire process of switching over from ATRAC to MP3. I love my new nwz-a728, but without ATRAC support, it's not perfect.

Sony should be ashamed of themselves for dissing their loyal ATRAC customers after all these years.

  4. Well, I decided to make the jump and buy a NWZ-A728 yesterday at Best Buy for $171. I spent the last 2 days trying to figure out how to get my sonicstage library onto it, and after several tries I finally got it to work. WMP is a really hassle to use, and I still don't understand it fully, but it seems to work okay, atleast at the moment. The player sounds unbelievable and is capable of so much more than any walkmans I had in the past, I think I'm going to like this one. Now if only it came in silver...

  5. That's what I'm looking for, an minumum of 8GB Network Walkman that is ATRAC supported under $200 (I mean come on I payed $200 for the HD1 and HD5 and they are 20GB). Can anyone help me out with this? I'm loving all the features of the new walkmans, like the nwz-a728, and really want to make the jump from HDD to Flash, but I'm not willing to lose ATRAC support. I don't understand why the newest walkman don't support ATRAC, my entire music library is in ATRAC. Can anyone help me out here?

  6. It's just impossible for Sony to do that, it's easier for people to actually just use other formats and softwares rather than Sonicstage and Atrac. How many people truly depend on Atrac anyway......? It's about putting an end onto Sonicstage and Atrac, it's not as simple as what u imagine it to be, Sony doesn't want any future Walkman to have anything to do with Sonicstage and Atrac anymore, that's the point that Sony wants you to know.

Do you know that it takes money and time to continue the support of Sonicstage and Atrac, and these certain investment doesn't bring Sony anything good? Sony wouldn't do this if Sonicstage and Atrac can bring them profit and selling points, instead they have brought Sony too much trouble ever since when Sony tried to battle in the DAP market. Sony wished that everyone can be like you Rob, very loyal to Atrac, but unfortunately most people just got turned off by Sonicstage and Atrac

But they don't have to invest in it at all. I don't even care if they NEVER update SS or ATRAC again, just SUPPORT it and continue to develop AAC and WMP11 or whatever for Walkmans. Just leave the option to use SS and ATRAC and don't necessarily advertise it if they don't want to.

  7. I think the reason why Sony doesn't want to use Atrac and Sonicstage anymore, it is all because too many comsumers, reviews and the whole DAP market just don't accept Atrac and Sonicstage. It's tough for Sony to hang on in the market with something that most people dislike. I have read too many reviews and forums that have said nasty things about Atrac and Sonicstage......If Sony allows Atrac and Sonicstage to continue as what you has suggested, then there is never going to be an end for Atrac and Sonicstage. So this certain change certainly hurts Atrac fans the most, maybe it's time to try different brands.....

You are missing the pt. Why didn't sony do what would make EVERYONE happy. Support all the new formats DRM free and the new software without tampering with ATRAC and SS. Allow both to be used, don't force either one. That way the consumers wouldn't be mad because they don't have to use SS or ATRAC.

  8. What sony SHOULD have done is allowed for BOTH SS and WMP 11 to be used with new walkman. The new NWZ series have no ATRAC support at all which is just down right stupid. Sony should support it's own format. What I don't get is why sony just didn't add all the this new stuff (compatible with WMP 11, compatible with DRM'ed WMA and AAC files, etc) and just leave SS and ATRAC as an option. That way EVERYONE is happy. Not just the people that wanted ATRAC gone, those that still use it and want to continue to use it would be satisfied as well. If you want to use WMP 11 and mp3, aac, or wma, do so. If you want to use SS and ATRAC, do so. If you want to use both, do so. That would've been PERFECT! But instead sony decides to totally neglect loyal customers and stop supporting their own ATRAC format and SS.

I don't get it, why didn't they just add all the new support for formats and software ALONG WITH what walkmans were already compatible with (SS and ATRAC)? What harm comes from continuing to support your own format and software, while at the same time, supporting software and formats the many others use as well?

  9. "Calculated on 4 minutes per song @ 48kbps in the MP3 format, not including videos or photos. Other playable audio file format song numbers and times may differ from MP3 format."

    48kbps?? Gross.

But yeah, footnotes are your friends.

48Kbps mp3? Wow thats like listening to nails on a chalkboard. This is why I'm pissed about them dropping ATRAC. An ATRAC3 file at 132kbps sounded the same to me as 192kbps MP3, and ATRAC3+ 64kbps sounded the same as MP3 128kbps. This saved me space.

  10. a tool is provided, to convert atracs to mp3.

That's not the pt. I don't want to convert my ATRAC tracks, I want to play them. I cannot believe sony would make a move like this, this is the first time I HATE the move they are doing. I liked Sonicstage and ATRAC, I finally found something that worked! I still can't believe there is no support in these players. Can't you still just run sonicstage and will pick them up? If not then sony is retarded. They should still support the codec and software, just not force it on their users, just leave it as an option.
