  1. sounds like its not wired properly , a true XLR to mini , will have pin 2 of the XLR going to both the Tip and Ring of the mini, and pins 1-3 will be ground .

what you have is XLR to Balanced TRS mini , so left is out of phase , hard to understand why it worked in the first place ?!?!?!?

thanks for the quick response. you know, as soon as i posted i realized that it is likely that i was using a different XLR to min cable. i could have sworn that i didn't but now i'm guessing that i was wrong...doh!

What I bought was this: Mogami XLRF Mini

and what I need is this: SoundPro SP-XLRF3MINI1

    estupido mio

  2. In the past I've used an XLR-to-Mini cable to connect a Sennheiser K6/ME66

to a Sony MZ-M100 minidisc recorder. I had no problems. Today I got my own

K6/ME66 and used the same cable as before to connect my gear. What I get

is a weak left signal. The right is about 3-times as strong. I thought it

might be the cable so I brought it in and tested it out in a local Guitar

Center. It seemed to replicate the problem on their equipment as well (even

with a different mic). So, I bought a new cable. However,

when I connect everything up at home it does the exact same thing (weak

left) as the old cable. Does anyone have any idea of what is going on?

    Solutions?

    Cheers for your time...

  3. A friend and colleague of mine from Colombia is soon to complete his independent, collaborative, documentary film on the forced displacement of Afro-Colombian peoples. It's a beautifully shot film and a touching story even for those that don't favor the flavor of political issues. I strongly suggest seeing it when it makes the circuit but in the mean time he has asked me to spread the word on the film's web site that he just put up. Cheers for your time!

  4. I use WinXP home edition SP2...I had sonicstage 3.4 working just fine. I went to install 4.0 and tried installing over 3.4 and the 4.0 version didn't show up just the bundled "simple burner." I figured it was the 3.4 interfering and unistalled 3.4 and tried again. the same problem still happens but now i don't have 3.4 to fall back on! oy vey...one of the errors i get when trying to install 4.0 is that i need to "insert disc 1" or manually find the following file on my system "C:\DOCUME~1\...1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sonicext.tmp\SsSetup". as there is no disc 1 i'm at a loss for why this shows up. and when i go to browse for the file the pop message just disappears and the install says it's over. SS4 does not show up on the start menu but there is a SS4 file (but no exe file to start the prog).

does any of this sound familiar to anyone? can anyone offer some good advice on how to resolve this? i just got back from a trip to south africa and i have over 11 MDs to transfer to my system. if there is a link to 3.4 around that would be great, too...why is this program so problematic?! :scratchhead:

    anyway, cheers for the help!

    Notes:

This is my first live concert/event recording. I was seated about 12 feet from a stage speaker with the mic on my lap. I did some basic "equalizing" of the sound using the Roxio 9 audio editor in order to deal with some of the clapping. I had to boost up the audio line for LKJ so some may hear a little airy sound. Overall, though, I am fairly impressed with the performance of this 'stealth' mic considering its size. I appreciate any constructive feedback people want to offer...

  6. granted, i'm not as much into the asthetic of the disc as i am the quality/longevity so i'll bow out of that part of the thread :P but i just thought i'd pass on that the classic blues are available for US$3.99 over at musiciansfriend.com and they give free shipping on orders over US$99. i've never bought from them but the shop appears decent enough (and about 2 bucks cheaper than others).

  7. Greetings fellow M100 user! Recently got mine a few days ago. My only experience with radio journalism was engineering a podcast for Golden Tiger Studios (they do computer game modifications), and I'm no professional in this field so you may take my advice with a grain of salt if you want.

What kind of broadcasting event will this be? Live AM or FM radio? Podcasting? From what few tests I've tried thus far it seems like Hi-SP seems good enough. Seeing as how the spoken word will be the main focus of the recordings then the supreme quality of Linear PCM might be overkill, then again you really can't go wrong with PCM no matter what situation. I would suggest that you switch over to HiMD discs so that you don't run out of time and have to swap out your storage medium during lenghtly interviews.

cheers Lopar-XL! (i'm no pro either...not yet at least heheh) i'm shooting for FM radio but i will also use some of the audio to produce podcasting and multimedia for Web content. so, i've been test recording on PCM lateley and and it does seem like Hi-SP is more than adequate for podcasting but i'm just not sure about FM broadcasting. i'm figuring i'll just go PCM all the way unless i'm in a controlled environment for a one-on-one interview that is likely to go over the PCM 94 minute max.

  8. I don't think that anyone with a whit of marketing knowhow would introduce any product at this time against it. It could be 10 times better, half the size and 1/4 the cost and the ipod would still stomp it into the ground. Or, more to the point, it wouldn't even notice it as it faded into obscurity. If you haven't noticed, ipod Means portable player, and sony know this because at one time Walkman meant the same thing. In 2004 Apple announced that 2 million ipods had been sold. In the first quarter of this year (ending 4/1/06) over 8.5 million ipods were sold. When a product is that hot, you just get out of the way. So forget about it. I love my mz m100 and if you want a minidisc, buy one! They're going for less than half retail now.

    no doubt B)

although, i own both an ipod (one of them first gen ones) and an mz-m100...so, who am i to talk ;)

  9. The MZ-M100 is based on the RH10, which is a discontinued model. Sony is coming out with an MZ-M200 very, very shortly. The MZ-M100's big selling point was that it was Mac compatible. As such, most people just bought RH10's for cheaper (who had PCs, or didn't need computer connectivity). So the model was never in particularly high demand.

You unfortunately jumped in right at the generational switch where the old equipment starts getting cleared out just before the new equipment comes in.

That said, there is nothing "wrong" with the model-- it's not like they're clearing them out due to defects. It's just "last year's model".

hey, thanks. that helps ease me mind :)

so, my more technical questions are (and i apologize for the possible newbieness of them but then, hey, i am :)...i'm just trying to find some grounding in all this...and then may be i can settle down - lol):

i'm working on a project for radio broadcast. what kind of quality differences are there between recording in the LinearPCM versus Hi-SP? i've read the specs and all that but i'm still not confident i know what that means when it comes to bouncing that final edit out of ProTools. with my project, I will be doing formal interviews but mostly gathering sound from people working/talking (in such places as offices, meeting halls, homes and on the street). So far i've mainly been recording on Hi-SP using the 80 min MDs. They sound good but is that "good enough" quality for broadcasting? is it recommended to work in PCM?

  10. first of all, this board is great (hats off to all the members)! second, i'm new to MiniDisc but trying to get a crash course before i head out to do field work this july. i'm a grad student in social documentation at UC Santa Cruz...anyway, on to the topic:

I purchased the Sony MZ-M100 from minidisco about a month-and-a-half ago and so far i'm happy with it (but what do i know lol). anyway, a few things have occurred that make me wonder about this model. 1) about 1 week after i bought mine the price dropped $100. now, i know this isn't exactly unheard of in the electronic's world, but $100?! 2) many outlets are now sold out of the M100; 3) it's really hard to find much info, reviews, or anything on the M100 now (even on sony's web site).

is there something "wrong" with this model? is sony jumping to a new model so soon? why? does any one here have some level advice/opinion and experience with this model?

    thanks!

p.s. the only drawbacks that _i_ can tell at this time: the surface is VERY easily scratched (i've resolved this by using a small piece of the removable PDA film you can get for Palm Pilots and such); it's a little "clunky" when openning and ejecting a disc; difficult to see the menu in bright light; the buttons are a bit small for people with average size fingers...

  11. a quick hello to the board members. i'm new to the board as well as to minidisc. i'm a grad student in Social Documentation at the University of California Santa Cruz. i'm working in audio documentary as well as photography. i'll see you around the board...
