  2. Try listening to Dream Theater "Awake " with no EQ whatsoever , and not thru the phones , a clean amp and decent speakers , just listen , listen to the mix, listen to the spread , detail , tone color, just listen . With damaged hearing you will not hear what those with normal hearing will hear, but you WIll get a better sense of How to mix so that those llistening to what you record , are hearing what Should be and not what YOU hear . Undrestanding that you have damaged hearing should make you aware that your mixing skills will be severely limited. I have a Sony Silver Mic award under my belt . Your ears are the most important TOOLs you have in the studio , if they are damaged you cannot trust them. So you have to change their reference point , in order to use them . Beethovens last peices were written when he was completely deaf. He worked from a different Reference point .
  3. Speaking of Battery life , I was at an Electronics store yesterday looking at the MD players ,and they have the HiMd players quoting 305 hour batt life ...........man things have changed. I am not kidding there was a pair of Victor MD players 250 -and 305 hours respectively, http://www.i4u.com/article4397.html
  4. In speech probably not , but Real ambience and music or where truly full frequency response is needed you will notice a little , not as much as you might think though. Nowhere near as bad as MP'3 , when you change sample rates in mp3 it is VERY noticable
  5. Actually the Bass frequencies are harder to control and that is what Most of the energy usage comes from , High freq's are less like transient peaks and require much less power to control but Bass in order to keep it solid , requires 5 times as much power. That is why if you look at your speakers ( inside them) the woofer is set up for 150-200 watts , and the Highs will be at a 20 watt power rating . The less EQ the less power , more headroom . cleaner sound . Distortion is an amps enemy . when the signal path gets distorted it places a HEAVY burden on the amp , because the Amp is now trying to control A sine wave that is no longer symetrical , or stable . Processing a Broken sine wave puts the amp in a state of flux , ( which if left there your amp will be ......just change a couple of letters) Guitar amps are different , we are talking audio here
  6. We have the "Hyaku en Shop" or 100 yen shop , and the 99 yen shop , And I am constantly in them , the quality of stuff in there would blow your mind , the first time I went in one I sounded like a commercial "This Is A DOLLAR???????" most of my boxes for my md's came from there
  7. What OS are you on? OSX any flavor should run 2.0 , version 1 .0 wont let you upload HISP,or HILP mode recordings at all ,only PCM which are huge files so they will take a while . On USB 1.0/1.1 the MD will act like a MO drive , and basically read in Real time , so if you have a long recording , your gonna need coffee.
  8. I just Bought a Battery for my Kenwood and I dont have the proper power supply as many have expressed problems about charging theses units. A Battery pack holding 4 NMHD Sanyo 2700 Batteries is connected to it and is charging quite beautifuly on the first try. NMHD 's are 1.2 volts , so 4 = 4.8 very close to our desired 5 Volts , also they are AC ripple free , none , zero no ripple whatsoever. Which is part of the charging problem , the AC here in Japan is 50hz , whereas in the US it is 60 hz , believe me it DOES make a difference. SO with NO AC freq for the machine to reference it accepts the voltage coming in much more readily. The charge Meter has been going for an hour non stop and no glitch . Make the Box ( Plastic with a Lid ,I will post pics tommorrow) and a proper sized cable for connection to the MD , 4 high capacity AA NMHD batteries , fully charged. When you get low plugin (works as both charger and power source) Hold the Stop button for two or three seconds and the charger should engage. Update , "The morning after " I will reword this whole thing later and post pics , but it WORKED PERFECTLY , got a nice fat full battery mark with the unit unplugged , and the battery pack still shows full as well. the thought , The SANYO 2700 NMHD 's run hot , on a full charge their voltage can be quite a bit higher than 1.2 , if I charge with my Solar panel setup they will register as a group 5.4 volts I have had 8 NMHD pack read at over 12 ( the voltage of the Panel direct) SO the Lithium in the MD is 1400 ma capacity 3.7 volts , Tha pack is almost if not a full 3 amps at 5 volts. This gives an almost perfect charging pattern to the lithium , Lithiums like a fast start, slow finish , at a full pack the initial charge is a BIG 3 amps direct , as the Lithium charges and they get close to meeting in the middle the charge slows down because the batteries each are getting close to the same level of power . One Cant take anymore and cant give anymore , Equilibrium. No overcharging , zip nada , ...clean conditioned charge , Which means that the Batts will last longer and charge better. so now I have to make a modified cable for the RH1
  9. There's no bitterness there , Now Now ,, There There its alll better now. wanna Cookie!? :lol2:
  10. Going Sattelite huh? youll be an uploadin downloadin fool then ZOOOOOOM
  11. Try a camera shop that carries Soft Cases for lens filters , the big 75 mm lens filters sometimes have accesory foldover black Neoprene cases , I have one and it fits perfect . I think I paid 3 dollars for it
  12. I was in tears for two weeks , and it still is difficult to listen to . Stevie was one of my heros , Anyone who would be kind enough to send me a couple of batteries for my MZ-R50 , would be welcome to a copy of it . It isnt the whole concert , but 59 minutes worth , you can hear the reverbs being cut in and out on Steveis voice during speaking parts, and other "Sound Stage anomolies" the sound is very different from the Released Version that was recorded from out in the audience. It has a nice raw tone to it that is all Stevie. Batts over here are way outa my price range, here is a link for over there wher you arehttp://www.camera-battery.net/digital-came.../SONY/LIP-8.htm
  13. Get AVG , instead of Norton , Norton is Crap . AVG is Free and works WAY better . Spybot search and destroy along with AVG and you wont have the other associated XP issues (I still have XP , But I am on a Mac now, The older SS prog had bugs galore , and Real Player And SS probably stopped drinking together because of Reals over bearing personailty , and SS just said Up yours! then Real decides Well I will just cause a Driver conflict and Sho Him. (You know how real is She doesnt like anyone else in control) And since neither of them are into S&M , they couldnt stop fighting . This is the Matrix you know
  14. Actually I think there are a couple of Digital Camera cables that might work with the NH1, I need a better pic of the end , then I could send a part number reference , so you couuld get some spares.
  15. Listening to Stevie Ray's final concert , I recieved a copy of the Blue master disc taken from Stevie's mixing board from a very good freind of Steve's sound guy. This person was one of my customers and a good freind, when he brought it to me , he said " TC , make a quik copy of this , I cant listen to it.....I will come back in a cupla hours and pik it up." I had no Idea what it was I just hooked my R50 to my CD player and hit sync. As I was walking out of the room it then dawned on me what I was listening to . This was two days after Stevie died. " If I dont see you in this world , I'll catch you in the next , so Dont be late"
  16. Thx Booj , thought you guys might like it.
  17. The Dollar store , buy the cheap eyeglasses , that is how ifixed the Kenwood DCM F5R
  18. It sounds like to me with the EQ setting that you were using , that you have Damaged Hearing. Eq set at that level only introduces Distortion and Noise into the signal Path . I am an Audio Engineer and I very Rarely even turn the Megabass on much less all the way up . When you crank up the levels on the EQ you KILL the Headroom of the output amplifier that drives the phones. I have worked with the Sony MP3056 mixing board ( do some research ) and every other piece of gear out there , I think your review needs to be revised.
  19. Dynamice mics that are XLR will tolerate the full 48 volt Phntm power of a mixing board . The MD is out puting 3volts or so at about 29 milliamps . Some dynamics will have higher output than others, the 57 and 58 are known for sturdyness not output. Any mic will "Work" in the mic input with the correct adaptor but a proper cable will give better results XLR- 1/8 wiring Take a good 1/8 -1/8 stereo cable about a meter long ,cut off one end . Buy an XLR plug for the mic from Radio Shack or a music strore ( cost you about 5 bucks) Nuetriks are my favs. Very carefully strip the cover off the cut end of your cable.Exposing a Sheild wire and a Red wire , and a White wire. strip off just about 1/8 inc of the cover of the red and white wire, solder them together, Open the XLR plug , take the sheild wire and wire it to pins 1 and3 and the case tab, of the plug and the RED/WHITE goes to pin 2 , this will take your Balanced Mono microphone , and send it to both Channels of the MD . and will take the negative out of pin3 and ground it so there wont be interference. enjoy
  20. Ray ....you Rock Dude! It was the part in the Compression section , about the doubletracking where one track had the %#%$ squeezed out of it , I thought you might find that funny.
  21. Hello fellow musician. What Atrac does in the most Basic terms , Is It examines the Frequencies that are Audible to the human Range of hearing . And theoretically removes the parts you dont hear to reduce the file size. What mp3 does is arbitrarily remove data to reduce file size. Hence when you encoded to Atrac you heard no difference , because only things you didnt hear anyway were removed. I also have somewhat exeptional hearing My base line is 23hz and fairly flat up to 1.2khz where it drops 3db then rises past the flatline at 3.7 khz (Peak ) and back down to flat line from 5khz up to 17khz then a slight peak and drops off at 22khz I have the graphs somewhere , My hearing somewhat resembles the AT 3032 exept that you would move the peak at 10khz down to 4 khz but the same levels and pattern. I have been Using Atrac (MD ) since the first model. And recording from an Atrac machine to a WAV machine I have never needed to distinguish between the two.Whereas MP3 was always audibly different . The RH1 has a better dynamic range than most I have used , but the MZ-R50 is my alltime Fav.
  22. If you are trying to upload songs from another recorder , or that are in Standard MD (SP,LP2,LP4) and not HIMD they wont show. You need to make sure you have your recorder IN HIMD mode and the disc is formatted in HIMD . So before you record anything Format the MD your going to use in HIMD Disc Mode , then Record in HIMD (HI SP, HI LP, PCM) then you should have no problems. See also if you are in Group mode , If you see a bunch of folders nested when you connect th MD your in Group record mode, If everything is in One folder ,then your not. Are you using "MD Transfer" The Sony software or something different ? To convert the HILP and HISP you need the MD Transfer software. It works good , I am on a Macbook so I can help with the Mac stuff. Go here http://forums.minidisc.org/downloads/details.php?file=95
  23. Are you Borean or , or antogonist? ... It has some similarities yes , and certain phrases are constant throughout the recording industry , any engineer who has learned , will come to the same conclusions about a lot of things , then after that are the personal touches and tastes in how the finished product turns out .
  24. Hey Ray , I think you will find the part about the Vocal Recording Techniques in the 60's&70's to to be very entertaining. Thx for the comments
  25. Nice Score dude . Beautifull unit , I am Jealous . I love the older units they were just built better . That will last for awhile take care of it . I have an MZ-R50 that I still use .Same time period Oh yeah I have the E50 next model after the 40 , It is playing on the stereo now,
