  1. Took my NH1 out of storage and I was devastated to find the usb to md cable had disintegrated. I plugged it into the pc anyway to try and charge the walkman which I then remembered would not work. It put the NH1 into pc mode and it kept on trying to read the disc. I then forcefully unplugged it while the disc was spinning and used the docking station to try and charge it. Unfortunately the AC charging cable was falling to bits too (lol) and the md walkman reported a long 'busy please wait a moment' message. Me being impatient, popped the disc out cause i was dying to listen to something on it having had it in storage for 5 years, possibly more. Subsequent attempts to load the disc just made the nh1 make grinding noises. I then tried to trouble shoot the error by recording to a blank disc. It recorded about 2minutes then reported a disc read error. I assume the 2min mark was the limit of the memory buffer. I examined the disc tray as i inserted and removed the disc to check that the cover was opening properly and it looked like it was. I then used a pen to shove the disc head to the side furthest from the motor, let it try loading the disc again then I opened it to see if the position of the lens had move. It hadn't. So next I shoved the lens head to the side closest to the motor, closed the lid and it read the disc ok!!! I'm so happy I didn't break it so if your walkman is having problems reading discs the lens might not be in the right starting position for it to work. Not sure why it doesnt reset its position when a disc is inserted. The sound on the NH1 is sooo good. Right now I am listening to a disc I recorded in 2001 and the sound completely destroys the dac on my $1k phone.
  2. Hi everyone I just bought a used NH900.It was sold because the display didn´t work.Hoped to repair it and it was easy going.Just a loose connection from the board. The seller stated it was used only a few times and sat on the desk for years , Actually the Unit is in very good condition and looks nearly mint. But by far it doesn´t act like that. The Recording head did get pushed inside so it won´t record.I tried to put it back butt it´s broken as the metal shutter is bend up and unrepairable. The other thing that is causin me to think is the laser. The unit just recognizes and plays pre-recorded discs. It takes 3-5 sec and the disc is recognized.Plays fine too. But every other disc causes it to state "read error" Sometimes a himd disc is loaded with no tracks. I believe i have to calibrate the Laser ? The failure is 06 as stated in the service menu. That is "Acess loop" How can i fix this without having the alignment discs? Ain´t it possible to do so with just an empty disc a recorded and a pre-recorded? I did read about that but not about how to do it. Appreciate any help.. greetz
  3. Hello ! I have just registered to this forum because I have recently gotten hold of a MD recorder, an MZ-N10, which I've got from a friend who had not used it in years, and who apparently did not plan to. The thing is, the unit won't read any MDs. Whenever I try an MD inside it, it fiddles around for a while making a loud whirring sound, eventually ending out with a "Read Error" alert. At first I thought it was just a problem with the MD but as I have another recorder that works, as I tested more and more MDs out it became apparent the problem came from the unit. Firstly I downloaded the manual off the internet and tried the "reboot" method that basically instructs to power down everything, let it rest for a while then power it back up, to no avail. Then I learned there was a service mode for the device, so I downloaded the service manual. After launching the service mode (with one of the methods that doesn't require you to disassemble the whole thing) and out of curiosity, I ran the self-diagnosis result display mode, to try to learn more about what could've caused the issue. This returned : 013 1 00B6 004 N 004B 035 N100B6 004 N200B6 000 R_004B Now I'm a complete noob when it comes to this kind of things, and I don't know if this would help, but the error codes indicate : a TOC address data error (013, which I have no idea what it is), two spindle errors indicating an abnormal rotation of disc (both 004 errors) and a MD DATA 2 disc error (the 035 one, which again, I have no idea what it might be). Have any of you had this problem before ? Is it repairable with having to send it back to Sony ? Thanks in advance ! All the best, A.
