enriquez
I just bought a Sony MZ NH-1 and am wondering what the clamp filters do and if they are necessary to use. The one on the remote is a bit bulky. Anyone know? _Scott
Qwakrz
They are to suppress RF interference to & from the device down the cables. Basically do what most people do & remove them, then if you have no problems you dont need to put them back on. My NH1 never had any clamp filters on the cables for the unit when it arrived (just one on the USB cable that I have removed) and I have no problems with the unit. KJ_Palmer
There is a 'seam' on the filter. One side is the hinge, the other side the clamp latches (?). Just lift the latches up (with fingernails/small screwdriver etc), and the whole thing should easily pop open. Don't try to force it open or you may damage the underlying cable... However, I've noticed some filters are beginning to be melded on to the cables (eg. on some of the USB cables). Maybe this will become a standard practice. Let's hope not - these may not be so easy to remove.
campekenobi
I just got the NH900, and it came w/ two ADDITIONAL clamp filters w/ instructions saying to use them whenever using an external MIC cable or any INPUT cable for recording. How serious is this?? What's the risk if I don't use them?? (any damage to the device itself possible?? Thanks.
jadeclaw
If you don't use them, your unit will not be harmed in any way. Use these clamps, when a broadcast station or an active radio mateur / cb-station is nearby. They prevent radio frequency interference.
