hi there...

i have made my way to this site after a long while spent searching the internet for information on different minidiscs...perhaps some answers at last...

i have decided to purchase a minidisc but don't know where to start. I do a lot of travelling and a minidisc seems perfect for having music along... also, i am a musician and lover of music so i hope to be using it for some recording, both personal and out at live shows.

my price range is anywhere between 100-200$...lower the better so long as it can do what i hope of it.

any suggestions in terms of what model i should be considering would be so wondefully helpfull.

thanks

I'm not sure of the specific cost, but I'd suggest that you look into getting a MZ-NH700 Hi-MD recorder for your needs. It's got a Mic input as well as the capabilty to record in all the various NetMD and Hi-MD modes. I simply asked what country you're in because the MZ-NH700 isn't marketed to all nations. I don't know why Sony chose to do business that way.

hi there-- I'm looking to purchase my first HiMD as well. I was reading over the "Differences In Nh600, Nh700, Nhf800, Nh900, Nh1, a guide for the undecided" FAQ and had a question.

Can someone tell me what is the purpose of the "line out" on the NH900 and NH1?

If I wanted to play from my MD player (say, NH700) to my stereo, couldn't I just hook it up via a 3.5mm cable using the headphone out jack? Sorry for the newbie question.

It's a valid question drdrtsai. A line out should offer perfect unadulterated sound to whatever stereo amp you conenct it to. The benefit is that you wouldn't have "colored" sound coming out of a portable MD unit's headphone out. The truth is, to most people, the difference isn't worth worrying about. Besides, the last MD unit from Sony to include a real line output was the MZ-R50.

The MZ-NH900 and MZ-NH1 both have a menu option that enables you to have a "psuedo" line out through the existing headphone jack. It basically turns off all EQ options and pump the volume up to the max. Unless you are an audiophile who has nicer equipment, you really won't miss a true line out port.

I haven't received my NH900 yet so I can't say for sure but if it is like most other devices, line out will get you a set level vs. headphone jack which can be adjusted by the volume control. It is usually located before the final amp so you eliminate the noise that comes from that also. Then there is impedance???

  • 2 weeks later...

I was in a simular situation a month ago searching on e-bay and looking though boards. Here is what I found:

Basic questions:

Do you want to record with a mic, if so there is a significant price increase.

Do you want to record from a computer, if so only the newer models record higher than 1x. i.e. more expensive

Do you want an FM/AM radio with the minidisc if so then you really limit your choices.

I made a comprimise on the NetMD and went with the SONY MZ-G750. It has a FM/AM radio in the remote, and it record from a mic and best of all it is usally less than $100 on e-bay.

Here is the best website review http://ravn.net/md/g750/

Hope this helps
