1kyle
Finally some sense herehttp://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/5203146.stmHopefully we might get some more open access on ATRAC as well now.As this snippet shows the writing's finally on the wall for DRM'ed music.Cheers-K Edited July 21, 2006 by 1kyle
A440
Note that this is exactly one song. It costs $1.99, twice as much as an iTunes download. And it is "personalized," which means that if it is shared online they could conceivably track down the horrible pirate who dared to deprive Jessica Simpson of a fraction of that day's makeup budget. "The new track, costing $1.99 (£1.07), can be personalised before the song is downloaded, allowing users to have their name inserted in the lyrics."Yes, the guy from Yahoo is right that DRM decreases value. That doesn't mean the music companies are really listening yet.
RobA
Damn, when I first read the title I thought it meant FREE music if it's DRM (aka ATRAC).
Tunster
Glad Sony and Yahoo are recognising that it DRMing content is going to destory our pleasure of control over what we buy. as the correctly said, CD had no DRM protection what so ever.As long as you buy the product, that money has gone to the artists. Its the same with CDs, people buy them, and then re-sell them on eBay. The money made on ebay isnt going back to the artists is it? But it was an original purchase legally. So why was there any bother with DRM protection? To be honest, record companies and e-tailers selling music online are shooting themselves in the foot by applying DRM. Only you the buyer can listen to it. With CDs, anyone can. Its not like you can lend a DRM file to anyone.
