Help! Viewing Dates of File Creation/Modification

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I got an old MZ-N505 working on Windows 10, in the hope that Sonic Stage would allow me to see the date of creation, modification or transfer of the files on some MiniDiscs but, sadly, that doesn't seem to be the case.

Does anyone know of any way to do this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

A

Nope, only if you are using HiMD and using it for file storage. The file system of legacy MD isn't ever visible to you. Not certain if there is even date information stored. You might poke around in the source of #linux-minidisc......

Thanks, sfbp. How do you mean the source of #linux-minidisc? Are there any tutorials on this site in respect of viewing the source code?

sfbp is correct. Tracks in legacy format (SP, LP2 etc..) don't have a concept of a date property. You can see this if you scroll through the options on the remote when playing a track or look at the properties of a track on a disc in the transfer window in Sonic Stage. Non Hi-MD tracks only have track title. The Group can have a title and the Disc can have a title. That's it. For Hi-MD tracks (Atrac3+) you can additionally have album name, artist name and track date. The date property for track will only be visible on certain units as well - usually the recorders / downloaders that have an internal clock function - for example, NH1, RH1, DH10P, NH3D etc... but it will be visible in Sonic Stage in the properties of the track

As a point of accuracy, most legacy recorders will apply a time-stamp to an MD recording, which will be written to sector 2 in the TOC information. With some decks, this information is accessible via the 'Retry Cause Display Mode'.

The minidisc.org archives are a valuable source for this [1, 2]. It' a slightly precarious procedure as you have to pretend to record on a disc, then put the machine into a form of service mode which allows the time-stamp to be displayed for each track by rotating the AMS knob. The process can be exited without actually recording on the minidisc's TOC.

*Edit* - Actually after trying out on a JB920, it seems this info can be retrieved from the disc without the process of intending to record. Insert disc into the deck, then when the TOC information appears, press the <stop> button for 10-15 seconds and the display changes. Rotate the AMS knob to get time-stamp info for each track in the format YYMMDD. The examples below show tracks on MDs recorded on:

  • 2003-04-17 (17th April 2003)
  • 2006-09-03 (3rd Sept 2006)
  • Small extra track recorded today (5th Jan 2021)

Unfortunately for the OP, I don't think this is possible for portables; it's not mentioned in the service manual for the MZ-N505.

Finally, of course the time-stamp will only be accurate if the original recorder had its clock set correctly.

1. How to put the deck  unit into 'Super-Undo mode' (Retry Cause Display Mode) -> http://www.minidisc.org/super_undo.html

2. How to display the info (e.g. on an MDS-JE520); second table, top panel -> http://minidisc.org/retry_cause_display_mode.html

Looks like this feature is available on selected QS (920, 930, 940) and on the ES decks only. Yet another reason for using a QS/ES deck for recording :-) .
