the gold plug

The gold is there so that the plug's exterior doesn't corrode and result in crackling in the headphones.

However it may be that you don't have gold-plated contacts on your headphone jack (or if you have used it for a long time, it could be that the plating has eroded off), which in turn may be corroded. This might leave a 'smoke' pattern on your headphone plug. You could take a peek at the contacts of your headphone socket using a flashlight and check for signs of corrosion.
