Question

Hi guys! My NW-S706 had some problems with the earphones a couple of months ago, it got sent back to be repaired but now that I've had it back for a few weeks, I'm having more difficulties with it.

Basically the rocker for skipping/forwarding/rewinding tracks intermittently stop working or bizarrely works in the opposite way (i.e. it push it up and it rewinds/skips back or it doesn't work at all...). I've rung the retailer as its still under warranty but they just want to take it back in for repair. I'm hesitant as they had for over a month last time and I don't exactly want that to happen again... Am I within my rights to request a refund or exchange? Or am I just better off selling it now and buying another MP3 player?

You'd sell something you know to be faulty?

(Hmmm, makes mental note not to buy anything from Firbird)

I think you'll have to let them have another go at it. Most warranties I've had say they'll only give you a replacement if it can't be fixed. However, it wouldn't hurt to tell them how disappointed you were with the service last time - despite the length of time they had it, they still couldn't fix it properly. Might be worth checking with your local Trading Standards people to see what constitutes a reasonable repair time, then use that information to suggest you get a replacement if they can't repair it in that time.

lol wasn't exactly gonna flog it on ebay! there's a shop local to me that buys electricals, esp ones with faults (that they deem fixable). could get £40-£50 out of it and contribute it towards a new mp3 player (NWZ-A818 for £99 on amazon maybe?!) it's just that i'd feel like i was losing out to get less than half what i paid for it only 7 months after i bought it...

I'd think you were losing out too. I'd definitely take it back for repair. What's worse? Losing all that money or being without it for another month? If you give up and sell it, at best, you're not giving the shop a chance to rectify their mistake and at worst, you're letting them get away with providing a below standard service. If they get it wrong a seond time, you'll have more reason to demand a replacement or refund - then you'll be able to buy that 818 :)

Wait till after Christmas though as the repair people will undoubtedly have a 2 week shutdown!

Good luck with it - let us know how you get on.

*sigh* I still keep hearing more and more issues with the S70x series. Mine began by not outputting any sound on the right channel unless you played a bit with the headphone jack.....weeks later the left channel was dead (now with no sound at all) and I do take good care of my stuff. Something tells me these series are just plagued with issues (not all of em I know). I just bought the NWZ-S616F (black) and haven't looked back...well...sort of, I just miss the recording function along with Noise Canceling (although the last one can be solved).

thanks! my only concern was that the warranty runs out in may and if they have it another month, there's not much warrenty left by the time it gets back.... just sounds like a delaying tactic to make sure i'm left with a non-functional player out of warranty

I once brought a printer back to the shop with 2 days left on the warranty..........I got it repaired free of charge. Always claim what is rightfully yours. If you have a local repair agent take the device straight to him ( with the warranty). Cutting out the shop can speed things up as some of them might only deliver and collect from an agent once a week (or so).
