Your going to have a hard time finding info on that archaic brick. Man, I thought my r30 was old.

Anyway, occording to the manual, the remote is the only way. Of course there has to be others. I'm sure you could change it through service mode, but you'd have to no exactly where, and that's not the kinda thing you play around with.

If the AVLS button follows standard remote specs, than it is just a resistor with a certain Ohm value, and if you could find that value, you could get a resitor to match and emulate its function. more info here http://www.minidisc.org/part_hacking.html.

If all else fails, you should be able to reorder from sony here http://servicesales.sel.sony.com/. All you need is the part number, which I assume is rm-mz3, but it should be on the remote.
