Eureka! That's it. "Disc mode" not "Rec mode", which is what I was trying. Doh! Well done Rich and thank you. Apologies BIGHMW for not reading your reply carefully enough . I was getting REC mode and DISC mode mixed up.

Good suggestions but I think I've already covered them. 1. I'm already in advanced menu mode because when I insert a H-MD the FORMAT option is there. 2. The 74min MD is empty because when I insert it the display says "BLANKDISC" 3. The only "REC mode" options available when the 74min MD is inserted are SP, LP2, LP4 and mono Looks like catch 22 to me. You can't get there from here. Any more ideas?

I have a MZ-NH900. The Manual implies you can format 60/74/80 min MDs into (39min?) Hi-MD mode. When I try it however, the FORMAT option does not appear in the EDIT menu . I can only see FORMAT if a Hi-MD is inserted . What gives?
