I purchased this over a year ago in hopes to revive my taping "career", but sadly I've been out of the taping scene for quite a while now that I don't see myself getting back into it again anytime soon. So for sale is a barely used Sony MZ-M200, also known as the bundled/newer version of the MZ-RH1. This was purchased brand new and was used once in a recording environment and a few times to transfer/play audio. Not sure what the going price is of this these days, but I'll let it go for $300 shipped.

I purchased the MZ-M200 a while back mainly for its recording capabilities, but recently there's been a lack of content to record so it hasn't been getting much use. What's the best way to store these batteries for long periods of time if that's even possible? I recently tried to turn the device on, but the battery was dead so it's charging now.

Thanks for the detailed description of what generally happens when you connect the recorder to the computer! It did clear up a few things for me, however I'm still baffled by how this recorder gets recognized in Windows. When I have an MD formatted disk in the player and connect it to the computer Windows recognizes the USB device. If I were to insert a HiMD formatted disk and then connect it to the computer, Windows does nothing. I have to turn on the device with the HiMD disk inserted before connecting it to the computer for it to recognize the USB. Is it normal for MD and HiMD to act differently?

Finally got around to pulling off a recording I made of a concert a few months back and listening to the recording on the computer and off the original MD there's like half a second of silence at one point in the recording. It's noticeable because it happens during a song. Anyone know what the possible causes for this could have been?

Is there a way to find out if the battery is weak? When I run the player off the battery I'm getting a full bar...

I'm actually connecting my M200 directly to a dedicated USB slot on the notebook. If I connect it nothing happens, however if I press play for example to turn on the player and then connect it Windows recognizes it then. If I press stop and eject the disk and insert a new disk Windows recognizes the change in he disk provided I don't disconnect the player. The player won't even charge unless I turn on the player first then connect it. Is my player busted?

I recently purchased the SONY MZ-M200 Hi-MD player and being that this is the first time owning one of these Hi-MD devices it took some time to get things set up. One question I have is, is Windows XP with SP3 supposed to recognize the device is connected as soon as I plug it in via USB? During the whole process of installing the included software I don't remember if the device was detected upon connection. Right now I have to turn on the device and plug it in while it's on otherwise it won't turn on. Is this normal or did I mess something up? Running Windows XP with SP3 and using SonicStage 4.2 with the Sony drivers downloaded from the Downloads section of this site.

Interested in the RH1... got pics? -
What actually happens when you leave the minidisc set to auto rec versus manual rec volume? Totally forgot about that damned setting and left it on auto last night...

Thank you A440 for your responses and moreso for the last one because had it not have been for that I may have realized too late that the cable I'm using to connect the preamp to the MD player is "defective". Well I'm not entirely sure if it's defective, but it definitely is impeding on the sound. After reading your message I tried the mic directly to the mic-in followed by the line-in and in both instances they provided a louder sound than my original setup. I then plugged the mic back into the preamp along with a set of earphones into the OUT of the preamp to verify that the preamp was working. It did in fact so everything is working except for that darn 1/8" cable used to connect the MD player and the preamp.

The mic and preamp combo I have is from Church-Audio where the mic supposedly are less sensitive and the preamp has the option of attenuating and amping depending on where the knob is. Your advice on not going by the numbers is an important one, however because the MD player is incapable of adjusting the volume WHILE recording it looks like I'll have to rely on the preamp to do the job. Still trying to figure out how sensitive the mic is and so far with the preamp turned on all the way my voice into the mic has been pretty low.

Hello everyone. I have an upcoming show that I'd like to record and in the meantime I've been researching settings and tips to better prepare myself for the show. One thing I've come across is setting the MD player's record volume at "unity gain" and let my preamp do the work when using line-in. Searches here and there keep turning up 18/30 for HiMD players, but I currently have a non-HiMD player and was wondering what the unity gain for that is. The player is the Sony MZ-R700 to be exact and the preamp I have is the Church-Audio ST9100. EDIT: is setting the MD player's recording volume to unity gain the advice to use when setting the volume at the venue is not possible?
