got a kenwood home md off ebay, plugged in a 1 gig hi-md and no cigar.....unit is kenwood dmse7...do I have bad unit or do I need to use older 80 md's???

I got a kenwood dm se7 off ebay and installed a new sony 1 gig hi-md disc and it won't recognize it--do I have a bad unit or is there a compatibility problem??? I'm totally newbie to md world, so any advice is appreciated
