I'd really like to see if this could work, anyone else wanna say "I'm game"
-
Ya know those slip cases that blanks come in? I have a pile of them here. I'd be willing to do a trade for them. I have about 10-15 of them. I'll have to double check though. How about 2 blank MDs for all of them?
-
Anyone label their discs and tracks? Or do people just leave them be? I used to find in cumbersome in the 90's but it feels pretty normal in our texting day and age! So I have all of my stuff labeled. What about y'all?
-
Glad to see this is getting some support! Anyone else want to put in their two cents?

Guitarfxr knows exactly what I mean! I actually heard about that film project on NPR a little while ago. A very cool idea. Let's do the same for MD!
-
I think it's a different effort when you do that. There's more control and more assurance but this little blank MD won't travel the world and fall into the hands of other MDers as it passes by. I think there's a lot of symbolism in it. I agree there needs to be a concrete method of shipping. Although considering the weight of a MD, it won't be costly. If I started this chain and the next person on the list was across the Atlantic then I wouldn't mind paying their shipping. Perhaps it can be a case by case situation? I'm not opposed to the upload idea, but I don't want to give up on the MD chain just yet, I'd like to see if we could make it work. After all it's worked with other formats and art projects. I didn't make this up, the other format to do this was Super-8 film. Passing a cart and filming different cities in at least 5 continents.

I can't seem to find a remote control for the HHB Portadisc then I found this site: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/christopher.o...moteControl.htm This person made their remote from scratch. But is that input a PS/2? Couldn't you connect a keyboard?

What is MD Artistry '09?: It starts out with a blank MD. Then someone records 1-3 mins of audio expression albeit: a joke, a song, a poem, a thought whatever! They then contact the next person in line, the next person receives the MD and adds their track. This continues in a chain and viola you have a community MD album! It's a joining of artists and others through MiniDisc! How it works: 1) Post on the announcement thread and whenever you post, determines your place in line. 2) The person before you contacts you when it comes time for you turn. If you don't respond within 3 business days then the person before moves to next individual on the list. 3) You pay for your own shipping. Meaning you pay for the MD to arrive to you. 4) Once you receive the MD then it's yours to record whatever you want for 1-3 mins. Please refrain from racial slurrs, sexist or offensive content. This is for fun not a vessel for hate! 1-3 mins allows for 20+ participants. 5) Once you've made your recording (you have let's say a week to make your recording?) then we move on to the next person. Look for whoever is next in line, contact them and send them the MD! And so the line continues. 6) When the MD reaches it's end, it will then be re-sent to the event starter who will make copies of the MD for everyone to listen to and enjoy! This is merely a proposal, the rules and details can be worked out through forum discussion. What do you all think? I'm in! I already know what I'm recording for my 3 mins! P.S. All tracks should be labeled!
-
Then how about it? Let's get this started! I'll post the event and rules up.

Hmm, I guess I'll stick to line in for now. Thanks for all the help!

I thought of that, but the issue is that not everyone has a second MD unit to copy one from the other. So I was thinking of a CD to recorded to MD. Then again, anyone can anything they want with the CD right? So maybe we should pass an MD down from person to person provided that we make sure everyone has the ability to make MS copies. I'm not sure if people are concerned with the quality loss of MD copies, I personally don't mind. Alright I guess this is out. How about something completely different. What if we made a chain MD? An MD is passed down from person to person and each new person adds a track of original material. This could be music, an audio comedy sketch or any other clip that is produced by the person recording the track. What do you think of that?

Anyone want to do a Vine? A Vine is found on a lot of tape trading sites. Essentially you take a live CD or other music CD and pass it along to others for burning etc. So if I was the original provider, my name would be at the top of the list. If you post and say "count me in!" Then I'll add your name to the list of the initial post. Whoever has the CD at present will contact the next person on this list and say "send me your addy and it'll be on its way to you!" So if I make the initial offer and I pass it on the next person on the list then they pass it on to the person following them. There are only a few rules: 1) If the next person doesn't get back to you after a predetermined amount of time then you move on to the next person. 2) You can't keep the original. 3) You can only hold on to the original for a predetermined amount of time. 4) Everyone pays for their own shipping. Meaning you pay for it to be shipped to you. Or you pay in blanks. I.E. if it costs $2 to ship the CD to you, then send 2 blanks to the shipper for expenses. Anyone else familiar with these things? I think it would be neat and serve as a great MD community event, get to know other people's names and interact more frequently. It'd be really neat how long the vine could get too! Plus if anyone else knows what I'm talking about, perhaps you can explain it better!

Unfortunately I have one more problem! I have a Samsung DVD player with an optical out. I was hoping to use this in my cd changer's stead. I find that with this one, it sends a constant signal but the MD recorder stops after the first track is recorded and the CD continues playing! I tried this with 2 MD recorders so it is definitely on on the Samsung's end. Does this optical issue seem more familiar? oh i hope so!
-
There doesn't seem to be an anti-skip setting on the player but I found this user review on the unit: I think the MD player loses sync between tracks "Din UNLOCK" and then when it receives a signal again it needs a second to get its bearings. This is because of the fact that the CD player doesn't send signal between tracks. I noticed that the optical lasrer is illuminated between tracks. Other units I've used have the laser on continually even between tracks. I think this CD player kinda throws off the recorder when it does this, that's why there's a delay. Let it be known that the RCA RP8078 5 CD Changer is no friend to MD recorders!
-
Hmm, I'll try and see if this CD player has that function and I'll make sure that it's off. I just tried the syncro with a line-in and it made new tracks without any delay so the transfer was great, but I mean I'd like to do optical and line-in isn't as efficient about making tracks since it just looks for silences. But I'll that a try and report back. Thanks!

I just cleaned both ends of the cable and the sockets as you said. The issue still happened except all the other times I'd just hit play and let the recorder to its business. This time I monitored it as it recorded tracks. I noticed that between tracks the CD player doesn't send a signal to the MD recorder so for about 1 second the MD recorder says "Din UNLOCK." Additionally the MD recorder takes about 1 sec to restart sync between songs. I've used this CD pkayer with another MD recorder I used to own and I never had this issue. I have to believe that there must be a setting on the MD recorder to adjust delay between tracks but I can't seem to find it. Is track delay in synchro a typical feature of MD recorders? Or is this a fault in my MD recorder?
-
Thanks for the tip. I'll try that out because now that I see the screen on the MD recorder it says Din UNLOCK which means bad connection and I used this cable recently with a different recorder so it may be the socket. I'll give that a shot and report back.

I hadn't used my MD-MS702 for optical recording from CD to MD until today. I noticed that while it was recording it was marking tracks like normal, then when I sat down to listen to it I found that the first 3 seconds of track were missing. It was set on synchro. Is that the problem? I don't have this issue with synchro on my other MD units. Perhaps there's a delay on synchro? Maybe I can adjust it? I don't have my manual anymore.
-
Thanks for the tips. I'll see how this goes. Just to clarify: I meant that it might take off some of the price. Maybe $30 worth but some none the less. Why would someone with a higher end MD deck want an MD-R2, there are many people out there who collect just to collect not just to own the best and only the best. I do see the Tascam and high end Sony's for list on eBay frequently. Except they are all around the price range of $450. If I had more disposable income I might buy one for that price. I'm not familiar with this Teac model but it sounds like a good deal. I may be able to get transformer from someone I know for free!

I'm want to try and shrink down my MD collection to just what I'd use most. I have a car unit for music and listening to my own audio work while I drive, a portable recorder for field work and I'd like a home deck for capturing to the computer or from other devices as well as labeling. I like how easy it is to label MDs with certain Sony and Tascam models by just hooking up a keyboard. I know that these are usually higher end decks but if anyone has a deal for me or a trade. I'll see what I can offer in trade. I know it wouldn't be an even trade but maybe could take off the price, I have a Sharp MD-R2 (which is actually what I'd like to replace with the Tascam or Sony). I've read that there were portable MD recorders that had a little keyboard you could hook up to the remote socket, also there was a Denon deck with a PS/2 port. Really whichever is most affordable and record able. I'm just looking for the labeling ease.
-
I like all the ideas! Maybe a Firewire 400/800 in/out for the deck for faster transfers. What would be really awesome is a higher capacity Hi-MD disc and a professional recording unit. Like the HHB one. 2 XLRs, 1 USB 2.0, 1 RCA stereo in, 1 RCA stereo out, 1 optical in, 1 optical out, phantom power, a qwerty keyboard built in, with featues to upload even standard MD metadata to Sony Acid and Apple pro software. That'd give protools and maudio a run for their money!

I know little about NetMD but you don't use the Hi-MD aspect of Hi-MD devices then I'd steer away from it entirely. As far as going for the Net MD, I'm sure someone will chime in.
