yep. I tried that. Its only for testing the buttons. I know from my portables that you can make tests on the head motor and disk spin but this manual is no good searching on the net for 1 week now and no results. My money goes to waste :/ the only hope is sony now to contact with the service department to see if the have a spare drive

does anybody knows how to enter this console into service mode ?

I bought a SONY MDM-X4 console with a problem in the mechanism of loading the disc. The price was 40 euros. It was cheap and i was sure 100% that i can fix it , but i was wrong. It always having an error on screen that says unloading. When i manually lift the mechanism from the gears on eject position i power off and on and says "No disc". Yeah thats a progress i think, you can browse settings and menu on the machine but but when you load it again with a disc mechanism goes down and slider stucks on going in front. Possible a mechanism problem i think but hear this one too. I loaded also a disk from turning the gears manually and when i power up the sceen says : "TOC reading" and then again "Unloading" with the mechanism not responding. I'm confused and i'm sure there is a sollution on this one. I need to ask you if someone knows how to enter this MD in service mode to make a diagnose in the mechanical parts of the Head also because i guess the disc is not spining.

Chickenvenus just answered for me I just write them on MD's for reproduction. In MD's for about ten years i recorded heavily 400 vinyls In the early years i start recording with an MZ-R30. this minidisc still plays like a charm

maybe you can find an MZ-R30 or 50 for this purpose that you seek my friend very reliable playersand cheap also

i record all the time my MD's in SP mode because i have 1400 vinyls and the only way to reproduce a fine copy is my minidisc Technics SJ-MD100 best sound i ever heard guys I have an ipod video just to hack my PS3 the sound is so crappy on ipod Minidisc is so reliable. i will not change it not in a million years

I found those HERE They are from fnac From what you are saying if its so bad quality i will not buy them But i never had a problem with sony tdk maxell and fuji MD's for about ten years i erase and write all the time with no problem with those brands even with memorex MD's i dont have a problem
