  1. Sony is set to debut a new USB wireless LAN adapter during CES 2010, named UWA-BR100 in the USA, specifically designed for TV’s and Blu-ray disc units. We know its destined for a CES reveal because the accompanying FCC documents have listed that several items in the filing (related to the product – such as operation manual, photos, etc) remain secret until January 8th, 2010. We don’t have any pictures of the UWA-BR100, but through FCC filings we know that it will be 802.11a/b/g and 802.11n compatible. It’s 802.11n wireless compatibility includes 20MHz and 40MHz channels, which means this wireless adapter will be able to handle up to (theoretically) 300mbps in a perfect networking scenario. Sony is also very firm that this wireless adapter will only be compatible with home entertainment products, by stating in one of the filing documents that “this device couldn’t work when it was used to connect the device to a standard laptop PC, and this equipment can only work with the TVs and Blu-ray disc players. This device will not be recognized by the Windows/Linux/other operating system of a standard PC, and that no drivers are available which would support a configuration.” We’re not exactly sure if this device will be backwards compatible with all Sony BRAVIA televisions and Sony Blu-ray players, but using common sense (in understanding this technology) and deductive reasoning we believe it will. We also believe that the UWA-BR100 will enable every single BRAVIA television and Sony Blu-ray player with USB to have access to the upcoming Sony Online Service along with its current online offerings. Sony Insider covered the aforementioned Sony Online Service in a very extensive blog posting recently that sheds light on an amazing new digital ecosystem Sony is set to debut in 2010; it isn’t just an iTunes competitor, but much more. One question remains, though – will the UWA-BR100 work with other non-Sony Televisions and Blu-ray players that have a USB port? Could Sony be aiming to bring the Sony Online Service to more than just its devices? It seems very unlikely, but not impossible. This information is a Sony Insider exclusive, brought to you here first. View the full article

  4. Since Sony brought a new and improved VAIO X, I have been wondering about how it compared to VAIO X505 in its dimensions as well as to some other slimmer small factor VAIOs I own. Current VAIO X is definitely another engineering breakthrough and its lightness impresses a lot of people who have asked me to check it out. I was at a meeting with it and my colleague picked it up and was so surprised because her paper pad weighed more than my VAIO X. So far my initial impressions are positive. Keyboard is very responsive and there is a slight learning curve to it. VAIO X505 keyboard is very similar however it still has a different feel to it. As for the touchpad, I am still trying to figure out the touch pad with its multi touch functionality. The LED LCD is crisp and beautiful color reproduction compliments it a lot. I could definitely tell that the older VAIO X505 LCD screen is not as vibrant as this one, and again back in 2003 there was no XBrite LCD or LED backlit screens either. Thanks to 128 GB SSD VAIO X is speedy and applications respond quickly, I will be upgrading VAIO X505 soon to an SSD glory and it
  5. Cellphone maker Sony Ericsson is moving its North American headquarters from North Carolina to Atlanta and close a half-dozen sites world-wide as part of a global consolidation that will cut about 2,000 jobs. The joint venture between Ericsson and Sony will consolidate product development operations by closing sites in Research Triangle Park; Seattle; Miami; San Diego; Kista, Sweden; and Chennai, India, spokeswoman Stacy Doster said. The site closures are new elements of a plan announced in April to cut world-wide staff of 10,000 by 20%. About 400 jobs have been cut since then and about 1,600 remain to meet that goal by the middle of next year, the spokeswoman said. The company has about 425 workers left in Research Triangle Park after shedding hundreds of jobs in the past year. She said she’s uncertain how many of the employees would be moving to Atlanta. The company announced last month that its losses worsened to €164 million ($244 million) amid falling sales in the third quarter, up from a €25 million loss in the same period a year ago. Sales during the quarter dropped by more than 40%. Copyright 2009 Associated Press View the full article
  6. Sony has released a firmware update for the PSP family of gaming devices, which adds a new column in the XMB called “Extras.” Within this column you will now find the “Digital Comics” category, which will become fully functional in December when Sony starts offering digital comic books through the Playstation Store. Sony has also strengthened compatibility with Media Go software, allowing folks to enjoy their video and audio playlists that they created within Media Go. Extras (Extras) has been added as a new category and (Digital Comics) has been added as an application under that category. With this application you can enjoy content such as comics and cartoon strips.>See
  7. Sony recently released the 3.10 firmware update for the Playstation 3 (PS3), which adds several interesting new features. It also is the foundation for the Playstation embracing social media services, beginning with Facebook. Many of you may be disappointed to learn there isn’t the full Facebook experience, but Sony has done well by binding your Playstation Network account to Facebook. Any trophies you earn, Playstation Store purchases you buy, or in-game achievements you experience will be published on your Facebook profile. You can specify which of those you wish to have noted on your Facebook as well. Here is a video from the Playstation Blog demonstrating these new features: Full details of the update: Photo Displaying photos in a grid The thumbnail images for photos under [Photo] are now displayed in a grid.
  8. In Sony’s Investor/Analyst meeting today, they had a section in their slideshow called the “5 Key Advantages of Playstation 3,” which is a general overlook at the system and its advantages in the market. The usual information was present, including mention of the Motion Controller (that will have vibration feedback), Blu-ray capability, PSP integration, and 3D gaming. However, there was one slide that had several interesting items listed: “New revenue stream from subscription” “Q2 FY2010: release non-game software development kit” I fully believe that this new subscription based service would not replace the free Playstation network access, but rather compliment it. I think that a free Playstation Network will always exist and has been a strength for Sony from the start. However, I do think that they will offer some sort of subscription service based on entertainment offerings, such as allowing you to download a preset number of movies, games or themes each month. There are many other possibilities as well, including increased download speed, a more detailed Playstation Network profile online, and other exclusive benefits. It’s fair to say we will probably see this Playstation Network subscription offering in 2010/2011. As for the non-game software development kit, we haven’t been able to get more information at this time. Very unusual! View the full article
  9. Sony has presented some information in their Investor/Analyst meeting today that is simply stunning. They have outlined further their 3D strategy, and it is much larger than I thought. Originally, when Sony announced their 3D intentions, they had did it in a way that seemed like it would be somewhat limited to projectors, televisions, and other displays. But what I am seeing here in these slides leads me to believe that it will be an all encompassing effort. In the slide above it is very clear to see that Sony is intending to bring 3D to their personal imaging line, including Cyber-shot cameras and their Alpha DSLR line. This would enable the creation of 3D photos. Sony also aims to bring 3D content to the home via the Playstation Network and the BRAVA Internet Video Link. There is also mention that Sony will release a 3D Blu-ray player (as expected, no word if previous models are upgradeable) and bring the technology to their VAIO Laptop (and possibly desktop) lines. Wow. Juding from the presentation, these products and services should be expected throughout 2010 to 2012. Sony is commited to providing a firmware update to the PS3 that will enable 3D gaming. Nice. Sony also aims to have more than 3,000 3D projectors installed in theaters by the end of FY2010. View the full article

  12. Under the leadership of its new executive management team established in April of this year, Sony has reformed its organizational structure in order to bolster profitability and transform its operations, with the aim of accelerating innovation and growth and optimizing business processes, particularly within its electronics and networked service businesses. As a result, approximately 80% of Sony’s targeted 330 billion yen (3.7 billion USD) of group-wide cost reductions for the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2010 compared to the previous fiscal year have been achieved in the first half of the current fiscal year. Furthermore, Sony is now positioned to launch a succession of competitive products from the end of this calendar year and into 2010. This also means that Sony is becoming a quicker, leaner organization which is more responsive to the market. They have promised that they will no longer develop products based on underlying technologies, but rather focus on the user experience. Please keep an eye out for some exciting developments we’ve spotted in this presentation in future posts. In this blog post, I will simply outline their goals. In order to permit further growth and continue to enhance profitability, Sony is implementing additional transformation measures centering on the following four initiatives: - Target consistent profitability in core hardware businesses (TV, game and digital imaging) - Provide new user experiences integrating innovative hardware, software and services - Reach out to new customers and develop new geographic markets - Increase Sony’s focus on environmentally conscious products and processes Through these measures, Sony targets an annual 5% operating income margin and a 10% return on equity by the end of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013. Details of these initiatives are as follows: Target consistent profitability in core hardware businesses (TV, game and digital imaging) Regain the leading market position in LCD TV business • Target returning the LCD TV business to profitability in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011 and achieving a 20% worldwide market share on a unit basis in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013. • Create a new revenue model beyond conventional TV business models. - Introduce “Evolving” TV that delivers new applications over the network. - Develop new generation displays using proprietary Sony devices. Strengthen profitability of game business • Target returning to profitability in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011. • Increase revenues by expanding hardware/software sales and enrichment of PlayStation

  14. I originally had a hot tip on a dark colored Sony mini stereo system that was quite impressive and headed for Europe, sporting a 3 disc DVD changer and a 7 inch LCD screen. I didn’t have a price, but I had a model name – the MHC-GZR33i. I then looked at SonyStyle USA and noticed that this product already existed, and is called the Muteki Shelf System LBT-LCD7Di. The US version has a tang orange color scheme on the speakers and light while the European version is more subdued and in tune with Sony Design. Oddly enough, I have seen little to zero coverage about its debut. However, what’s really crazy is that the product is available at a ton of stores. Let’s talk about the US version first: Fusing a 7″ LCD screen, 3-disc DVD/CD player and an iPod (including iPod Touch and iPhone) dock, this Muteki shelf system is an extremely diverse offering from Sony that is sold at $499, but can be found for nearly $75 less already. In addition to 360 total watts (180W x 2) with GROOVE and Z-GROOVE (lol) bass boost, this Muteki system comes with a karaoke feature that allows you to sing along to your favorite tunes. Plus, you can play your iPod video, DVD or view a photo slide show. The tiny screen is nice, and if you want to show video on a bigger screen it has composite video output. Other I/O include digital audio output, headphone, and analog in. You can play music (MP3) or video from CD’s, DVD’s, iPod, and USB. Put a single DVD disc with a bunch of MP3’s and your sitting pretty. Overall codec support includes MP3, WMA, AAC, and DivX. Did we mention it reads many Walkmans easily because they appear as mass storage devices? It also has the ability to listen to the radio or record and playback from the USB port. More specifications are available at SonyStyle. So, the European version is essentially the same but looks much better in my eyes and is called the MHC-GZR33i – it hasn’t shown up anywhere yet but it will soon. I don’t have details on the price, but at $499 in the USA, I’m sure you can use your imagination. The only comparable system being sold in Europe right now by Sony (although that will change when this arrives soon) is the similarly named MHC-GTZ3i, which has less features. This information is a Sony Insider exclusive, brought to you here first. View the full article
  15. Sony Gulf announced that 16 school children from Dubai had a unique opportunity to walk the same pitch with their football idols as official flag bearers, carrying the FIFA flag for the 2009 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Dubai. Selected through the Sony Dubai Schools Football League, children from the third, fourth, fifth and sixth grades were chosen from 22 schools through essay competitions and other in-house competitions for the program. 18. Hey guys and girls, I am sure you may have caught the news from last week about supposed integration of PS3 and your Facebook account (leaked picture) and this evening Sony Computer Entertainment has confirmed its entrance into social media. Though you won’t be able to get full functionality of your Facebook management (like updating your status), Sony says the first baby steps of integration will be available this Thursday under new 3.10 firmware update. Check out video below for a walk through. From PS3 Blog: Hi everyone, here?s an early peek at PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.10). The latest update incorporates Facebook into the PS3 experience. By linking your PlayStation Network account to your Facebook account, you will have the option for the PS3 to automatically update your Facebook News Feed with Trophy and PlayStation Store activity. This update also enables developers to set specific criteria in their titles to publish additional game information to your News Feed. You can then check out your updates, and those of your friends, on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media favorites through the PS3?s built-in web browser. This is just the beginning of our integration with Facebook and we are looking forward to adding new features enhancing the experience in future updates. Additional highlights from update 3.10 include: * The Photo category on the XMB has been revamped to make it easier to see more of your photos stored on the PS3. * The PSN Friends List has been modified based on feedback we received after update 3.00. Additionally, you can now choose a color for your PSN ID on the XMB. View the full article
  19. Hey friends, as you may or may not have read in my other writings, I own a Playstation 3. However, my friends list is not as big as it should be! It would be really great if I could add a few of you guys and girls to my list so we can play games together. I own several multiplayer games, including LittleBigPlanet, Star Wars: The Complete Saga, Hot Shots Golf, and more. I’ve been playing alot of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 though! Please add me: kurisumaku p.s. This post originated nearly after I started the site back in 2008, but wanted to repost it again to add more friends. View the full article

  21. I purchased Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on launch day because I the hype behind this game was simply outstanding. The hype was well deserved because its the most phoenominal multiplayer fps experience I’ve encountered. The level of customization (different custom setups, killstreak unlocks, etc) and awesome little rewards like titles and callsigns have you constantly evolving your character. The game looks great on the PS3, although I wish the textures were a little more defined. Nonetheless, a strange issue started happening to me recently where the game would freeze or start freezing up during multiplayer gameplay. This would usually happen at the beginning, or even a few moments into a match. It was occuring over and over and I was getting quite concerned. After Googling around, I didn’t find much until I actually went to Activision’s support site. I highlighted below in bold what fixed the issue for me. Here is the fix they list for this issue: This may be caused by a faulty game disc, or problems with the PlayStation 3. Check the disc for abrasions, scratches, and dust. Ensure the PlayStation 3 is in a cool, well ventilated place. Try deleting the game data. Go into the XMB menu. This is the menu that you see when you turn on your PS3. Select Game / Game Data Utility. Select the game and press the triangle button. Select Delete and then press the X button to confirm. Once this is done, reinsert the game disc in the drive. You will need to install the game data to the PS3 again. This should not affect your saved game as it is stored in a different folder. Try the game on another PlayStation 3. If none of the above resolves the issue then this may indicate a problem with your Playstation 3 and you will need to contact Playstation Consumer/Technical support at (1-800-345-SONY). Additional PS3 troubleshooting suggestions can be found at Sony’s support site. I hope this helps! View the full article
  22. VGP-BMS80 is the latest VAIO Bluetooth Laser mouse and trust me Sony has come up with a different kind of a mouse this time. Since VAIO as a brand has been introduced there were a dozen of mice that Sony created and in recent years bluetooth mice dominate the market. All kinds of colors were introduced to match your VAIO. I will be prepping up a post in the near future about a VAIO Mouse and how this device has been evolving throughout years. For now, check out this pictorial and watch out for the upcoming video of this laser mouse to be paired with PS3. Our earlier post about it can be found here. The Bluetooth Laser Mouse VGP-BMS80 is a multifunctional mouse that can connect to a VAIO PC or PLAYSTATION 3 without using a dedicated device driver. It has the following modes of operation: 1. PC Modes. There are 2 PC Modes available for your to operate with your VAIO: Air Mode Mouse Mode During Air Mode you can freely operate your personal computer at a distance from the display. For example, you can operate your VAIO connected to a TV to play movies or music, or view a Web browser from the comfort of a sofa. While in Air Mode, the mouse
  23. Sony has introduced a number of keyboards to accessorize your VAIO from wired to wireless (VGP-WKB1 and VGP-WKB5) Here is a pic of VGP-WKB5: This is the first time Sony went with Bluetooth option (the ones above used RF). We have written about its introduction here and now it is time to unbox it. Watch out for a video review and its interaction with PS3 later on. View the full article
  24. Well, it didn’t take very long for the PSP Go to be hacked, with some people heralding it as nearly an impossible task since the homebrew scene has been struggling to thrive lately. The only problem is that the creator of the hack is keeping the hack to himself, and won’t be releasing it. The showed up on YouTube yesterday under the username daveexfusion, which is associated with a website I found called Davee’s DevSite. " />" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"> He goes on to state, This video is for bragging rights ONLY (since it’s very cool nowadays) and shows our Proof of Concept 6.10 Custom Firmware running on the PSPgo. This will never be released to the general public or anyone else at all whether you are a dev or not, this is Team Typhoon internal material, we have no reason whatsoever to waste a perfectly good exploit. So don’t ask for release dates. We don’t care about your complaining, whining and everything remotely related and it’s your own damn fault since you brought this on yourselves. Better version of the video showcasing more homebrew coming next week. Thanks go to Sony for this awesome piece of new hardware, finally a decent hardware revision. Also thanks to all historied PSP Homebrew developers for paving the way for us to be able to do this. View the full article
  25. The gaming blog Destructoid has a hot tip on some possible color variations coming for the PSP Go. Apparently, marketing firm Hall & Partners Europe (connected with Sony) posted a survey on their Valued Opinions website that shows the image in this post. The survey queries users as to what colors they would like to see next for the PSP Go – including, Bright Yellow, Coral, Burgundy, Light Grey, Camo Green, Blue, Turquoise, Pink, Bright Red, Lemon, Navy Grey and Ocean Blue. It doesn’t surprise me that Sony would go down this route since the regular PSP-3000 is available in several various colors in various regions. Which one do you like? I like the Blue of course! It would remind me of Sony Insider. View the full article
