    2 CD drive problems

checked my work laptop and I have XP Professional with the latest service pack... still no CD burning. I can live without it, the problem is sonicstage just lumps all my OMA files in one directory so burning an atrac CD in Nero with just the albums I want is tricky. Cheers Pug

    2 CD drive problems

My work PC has a firewall, but it seems to let most things have a free time of communicating with the net. My home PC also sonicstage 3.3 has ZoneAlarm which has full trust for Sonicstage both ways. Interestingly in my options>CD settings> CD Info (or something to that effect) there are no options whatsoever! Cheers Pug

    2 CD drive problems

Thanks for the response. 1) I'll wait for sony... 2) siple Burner rabs titles ok... Cheers Pug
  7. My two problems with Sonicstage 3.3: 1) It is simply not recognising my CD/DVD writer - I can not burn atrac CD's 2) CDDB is not working - I hit the CD info button, it asks me if I want to register with CDDB. I hit yes and nothing happens. Any pointers would be appreciated.. Cheers Pug
  8. This all seems a bit of a nightmare to me, I also thought that anything I recorded in analog form could be transfered from PC to PC... not the case. The only way I've found to sucessfully do this is using the sonicstage back up tool. (Note this will erase any sonicstage data on the 2nd PC) Cheers Pug
  9. Leffe Blonde is one of my faves. As for chrimbo, I will be doing the usual; eating, sleeping, drinking and spending time with family. It's all a bit stressful as my campervan needs a new engine, which we have just got delivered but trying to get the mechanic to fit it before christmas may be difficult. As a bit of a coincidence we were thinking of taking the camper to Bruges for New years if it's fixed in time... Cheers Pug
  10. Love the idea, takes me back to my good old trading days... - SP or HI-MD 80min formated I don't mind. - International Ok with me. - Any genre except very heavy metal, classical or country...eclectic mix prefered. Cheers Pug

    Tags in Sonicstage

Thanks for the offer atrain, but I have tested myself instead of being lazy! If you edit at the track level then the tags are saved within the track tags (Multiple cover art is saved in the tracks which is quite nice!). (ratings are not saved) However any editing at Album level are retained on the computer that made the edits. Cheers Pug
  12. When I edit track/album details (song names, genre etc) in sonicstage does it save the details in a tag or the sonictage "database"? I'm in the process of converting all my MP3's, CD's and MD's to atrac and I like the idea of editing the atrac files in SS after the import, but i don't want to loose these edits once if I decide to burn to CD and transfer to a 2nd PC. edit: I'm using latest SS Cheers Pug

    Do or Die?

Now I'm interested! I'm half tempted to go all out atrac... If I can use atrac files between 2 pc's and back them up to CD I think I may be sold! Cheers Pug

    Do or Die?

Thanks for the input guys.. I did try a flash player - cheapo 512mb, but I found the navigation pretty much unusable. There was nothing more than a next/back button. Since I had up to 250 tracks on this thing i was near enough impossible to manage. My mp3 collection is increasing daily, and I now intend to rip all of my CD's -possibly MD's to a harddisk in one lossy format - MP3 or atrac (atrac may no be sensible give drm, or have things changed?) How does sonicstage deal with a lot of mp3's - perhaps 500 albums? Is it scaleable? I have used mediamonkey in the past and it is lightning quick. For me it may be "do or die" as I if I go the route of encoding everything to atrac I will probably be with the format for another 5 years. Not to mention if I buy a RH-10 I can't jsutify another purchase for at least two years. I totally agree with you about removeable media, I can't help it. I've had the same disc in my MD player for the past week now, but I love the fact that I can remove it if I want to! Cheers Pug

    Do or Die?

I have just recieved my christmas bonus... you can see where this thread is going. The decision lies with MDCF; I am at a changing point in my life... What I have done: I have been using minidisc for the last 5 years and have absolutely loved every minute. I've recored realtime, traded, mixed, mic recorded, toc cloned, SCMS defeated, edited, and met some mates along the way. It has all been good, and then some. What I have never done: Draged and droped, synced, playlisted, 40 giged, not transcoded. What I have: 400 SP minidiscs, lots of units, a real love for minidisc, Zero inclination to increase the number of SP discs More and more mp3's that need to be listened to on the move A bloody slow PC that will transfer mp3's ok via usb, but transcodes realtime. A love for minidisc that (I have tried to kill with a flash player) will not die. What I want: ?? don't know Synopsis: I love the removeable media, love the quirkyness, love minidisc generally, but have yet to experience the other side. I have messed with 1st generation Hi-MD with the 600, and it seems ok, but do I invest in a 2nd gen best of both worlds mp3? To cut a long bit of rabble (yes I have been chrimbo drinking) This christmas I will buy a portable that will probaly change my life... opinions very much appreciated Remember I have never bought a full price MD player in my life and this decision will be influenced by MDCF Cheers Pug Btw I stuck this in off topic, as I'm not quite sure where this thread is going...

    The New Look

I quite like the avatars on the the right as it means when I'm at work I can drag them off of the sreen to the right. Not that I don't like looking at all the pretty pictures but it is a bit obvious I'm browsing a forum (even though I only do this on my lunch break) With the original skin I could drag to the left, but when you hit "back" to go to search results all of the text is off the screen. I know there is a lo-fi version, but I find it difficult to get to grips with. So my verdict is I like the new skin. Cheers Pug
  17. One thing I have never understood about PCM/WAV is why it is "uncompressed" As it is 1411kbps, wouldn't 2000kbps sound better? Or even 1412kbps? Also whats's the business with 44.1khz and 48khz would 200Khz be better than the lot? Sorry if I'm a little over simplified on these things, but why is Wav 1411kbps 44.1khz the defacto uncompressed? Cheers Pug
  18. Indeed the thread was meant very much tounge in cheek. Although I don’t keep anything all that contentious on MD, I may have the odd spreadsheet, CV, photo’s from my mobile phone etc. that I don't want to share with the whole office. I find it quite nice that more or less I have exclusive access to these. The flip side I suppose is that if I want to share any of this data it is slightly more difficult. My biggest problem with storing stuff on MD (well with removable media in general) is that I’m rubbish at organising/labelling. The amount of times I have thought “wow I have over 50 blank MD’s that’s nearly 15 gig of storage for my entire photos etc.” started saving jpegs to MD but forgot to label the discs or file them and given up. However I’m great at organising folders on a HD.
  19. Just testing the function to upload Net-MD tracks and I get the following error message: ERROR:[1778-2-0]: Failed to create destination file. Please ensure that the filename is valid and you have the correct permissions set for the directory where you want the file created. Pleade also make sure you have neough disk space. I've check all of the suggestions above and I have permissions and enough space. Cheers Pug
  20. It has just dawned on me (yes I am a tad slow) that minidisc as a data storage medium is rather good. Why? Because if I leave a minidisc lying around at work (or anywhere else really) nobody is likley to attempt to get data off of it due to: a) Not know what the hell it is and leave it. B ) Know that it is a minidisc and "minidisc is a bit like a cassette and has music on it" and leaves it alone. c) Has read somewhere something about minidisc being able to store data (or seen the matrix) but not have any kind of hardware to access it, and leave it alone. If I leave a CD(DVD)R lying around everybody in the office has access. However out of interest is there anyway to password protect a minidisc. Cheers Pug
  21. HI-MD has really thrown some recording confusion into my life..! Since the age of the internet my musical tastes have really changed and the majority of music is now recorded from the net or radio. There is a wealth of free music streams, radio stations, promos, live performances etc... (recording these to minidisc I know may be a bit of a grey area legally, but surely better than downloading full albums p2p) This is why I've stuck with minidisc, because it records very simply and very well. I have a rather tasty sounding Yamaha deck which is SP only, which coupled with my SP only portables I was very happy with. I was a very late adopter of a portable MDLP recorder - and that threw a bit of a spanner in the backwards compatibility works. Then very recently I bought a HI-MD 600D at a very cheap price, which was fun and a bit of a novelty for a while. But the size of the thing and the fact that if I record something in HI-MD mode on it, thats the only place I can listen to it are starting to put me off. Do I record streaming mp3's to Hi-MD, live shows from the radio to MDLP, personal mixes to SP? Put all my mixes onto old discs formated to HI-MD, buy more 1GB discs that I can only use in the pretty shoddy 600D... etc. Choices, choices! I thought Hi-Md was a good idea as I now have over 400 legacy discs and thought the improved media space would save me some physical space. I'm actually considering selling the HI-MD portable and just reverting back to MDLP. Legacy MD discs are so cheap especially 2nd hand, people are practically giving them away. I think the main problem I had was a lack of organisation with my MD's. this really started to put me off MD altogether. I had cases without discs, un-labbled discs, piles of them in draws etc. I have now organised these, erased anything I will never listen to, got some decent storage draws for them and feel much happier about, further recording more music to MD. Incidently sound quality has never been a factor for me, I find HI-LP acceptable for listening, and even LP4 isn't too bad to my ears. I'm not sure the purpose of this post, just a bit of a brain dump really. Cheers Pug

    London Bombing

Not good at all, my thoughts go out to anyone involved... Very strange atmosphere here in London, can't do any work, not sure how I will get home but not really bothered in light of what has happened. Just neeed to post.. Cheers and look after yourself. Pug
  24. Very quick question: I'm running windows 98se. If I uninstall sonicstage and go back to OpenMG (long story) will I still be able to use my Hi-MD as a mass storage device? Or will this delete relevant drivers? Cheers Pug
  25. Hello all, quick question I'm uploading a fair amount of music recorded from the line in, which I store on the Hard Drive and back up onto DVD. (in native atrac) My question is if I reformat or buy a new computer will I still be able to listen to these files and transfer them to my HI-MD? Cheers Pug
