CeBit is a product show held yearly. It is similar to CES held at Las Vegas. http://www.tomshardware.com/business/20030...0313/index.html It's not related at all, but they showed my dream laptop there!

Type S = Type R + better playback on LP2 and LP4 recordings. In other word, for recording purposes, Type S and Type R are the same.

Thanks to sony, netmd is as complicated as vi ... For LP2 and LP4, netmd should give the best quality. But because netmd doesn't do real SP, recording off the optical out from soundcard will give you real SP. Of course, the sound card needs to be good in the first place.
-
That's not true. NetMD transfer is done bit by bit digitally.

How about work extra part time for a few weeks and get the DR7? It has longer battery life. Unlike MT770/880 you can fully operate the unit without the remote. It has trace-back recording. The headphone output is rated at 8mW+8mW which is way above average (MT190 has 10mW+10mW though). Lastly, the 1-bit digital amp is truely revolutionary. If you browse around T-board forums, many long time MD fans say DR7 is their dream portable MD recorder. I don't think I am helping here

I assume the MiniDisc you have is 74 min long. 80 min ones are available too. 74 min means the disc can hold 74 mins of SP recordings or about 150 mins of LP2 recordings or about 300 mins fo LP4 recordings. The SP recording using NetMD are not true SP and only has LP2 quality. So most people only use LP2 for NetMD.

I want to buy a Sharp recorder, which one is best? Plus mac?
Sugo replied to thepassenger's topic in Minidisc
If you simple want the best (guess not) then most people will recommend Sharp MD-DR7. Sharp MT770/880 and MT190 are excellent too. They cost around $200 usd. -
The only major difference is the Mic input on n707. If you don't need live recording, maybe n707 is not worth it.

I assume you are trying to delete tracks recorded by openmg / sonicstage / realone. These tracks cannot be deleted by the newer netmd sony units. You have to delete them using a netmd software.
-
I haven't seen an option to disable this feature on a few sony and sharp models. The best one can do is probably hit the rewind button once and it will take you to the beginning of the track.
-
I think you need to tell openmg to remove the .omg file for the song.

Might future generations of MD encode MP3 as well as ATRAC?
Sugo replied to Neil's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
Technically sony must have been capable of doing that for a long long time. But because of sony music dilemma, sony electronics tries their very best to make digital music transfer as difficult as possible. My best guess is that mp3 on a MiniDisc will never happen. -
Welcome to team auvi! It would be great if you can share your thoughts with us after you got your unit.

I have been through that before. One major advantage of MD over flash based mp3 players is that you can swap MiniDiscs instead of re-downloading your songs. MiniDiscs are cheap so you can buy on demand. I though re-downloading was ok but turned out to be a pain. With MD you can carry several MiniDiscs with you and change your tune in 5 seconds without hooking up to a computer on the go. Transferring mp3s from computer to MD can be done with netmd. But be warned that some people find netmd very difficult to use. I use sonicstage and got it working the first time. However, you might find downloading mp3 files straight to mp3 players easier. Sound quality and battery life (>30 hours) are also superior to iriver. But if all these are not your concerns, iriver does make solid mp3 players. For starter, I think sony n505 is a great value unit with netmd ($83 shipped from ubid.com). IMO, a n505 plus a decent player (e.g. sharp ds5) is a better deal than sony N1, especially if you don't do much live recording. One good thing about N1 is that the remote can display kanji (you have to translate big5 to JIS if you are dealing with real chinese).

770 and 880 are pretty much the same except netmd. Thus if 880 bothers you because you need to carry remote everywhere, so will 770. Don't know how sharp made that decision - no title, no track time on main LCD?? DR7/470/480 has a digital amp, trace-back recording and much longer battery life than 770/880. The only downside is 10 grams heavier and a bit bigger. As you don't care much about netmd, I would say DR7 is the way to go.

With r700, I don't think it's possible (unless you are a sony engineer or something ).

I believe you have Live Drive I which does not have toslink optical out. Only Live Drive II or IR comes with toslink optical out. http://www.audiencedp.com/sbdb3.htm You can buy the above card to get optical out though.

agree totally, Reni

Ha, I think sharp really should ask Utada Hikaru to do a MD commercial for DS8, just like the panasonic one from Hamasaki Ayumi.

we do need a long list of FAQ after all ...

I am so touched, finally somebody ...

In case your source files are mp3s ... I believe openmg has a really bad mp3 decoder. This has been reported by many other users before. Realone uses openmg behind the scene so they will come out the same. I only use sonicstage and never has that problem. I would suggest try uninstalling openmg and install sonicstage 1.5.

n505 has ATRAC Type R, but it's used only for SP ATRAC recording. LP4 is in ATRAC3 format. The encoding can be done on computer (transferred via NetMD) or on the unit itself (via analog or optical input). LP4 has significantly lower quality than SP and LP2. But still, many people think it sounds ok for outdoor listening.

I can connect n505 to external speakers with volume only at around 15/30. I am pretty sure 5mW+5mW at 16 ohms is loud enough for most people - unless you have a really high impedence headphone. The new n510 offers 5mW+5mW at 24 ohms so it's louder than 505. It should be widely available soon.
