Thanks. Sadly I cant get a NH900 from amazon as they dont stock it anymore. I want backwards compatablity for my existing mds, otherwise I would probably just give up the format. Is the NH1 completly metal? If so hopefully it will be stronger. What is the proprietary usb connection? Its actually fairly cheap on amazon.

Thanks for your reply. I dont want to give up on hi-md but I have read in the hi-md forum a lot of other people with the problem that the last third of the disk hasnt been accessable, which I am afraid is a symptom of the hi-md drives being very fault prone. My only other real experience of sony is with ps2 which is also notorious for having a very poor quality disk drive. I will be interested to see if the psp start to develop drive problems. it looks like i could get either a MZ-RH10 or MZ-NH1 or MZ-NH600. I lean towards the NH1 any recommedations?

I have been using mini discs in various formats for nearly 6 years now and I am getting fed up with them. In the past I have had an MZ-R55 and an MZ-R501 both of these I really liked but unfortenatly I managed to break them. After this my troubles started. I had two different MZ-N710 units both of which kept stopping and going back to the start of the disk, so I assumed this was a fault of the model. I then bought a MZ-NH700. Which was fine for a few months but then was unable to record onto the last third of a hi-md disk, which it could do before. Now it is unable to record on hi-md disk at all and the older disk seem to have occasional gaps of silence when playing back. So have I just been unlucky with my last 3 units or has the built quality got worse as more functionality is crammed in? Should I get a new mini-disc recorder and if so which model or should i just invest in a different format? I would like to stick with mds as I have hundreds of disks but I would like something that lasts more than a few months. As my current NH700 isnt a year old I can return it to amazon (uk) and get a replacement. I dont think they have any more NH700s so it will be a different model. Are the second gen Hi-Md any better and are they available in the uk? Would I be better with a metal case md like my original r55? Anybody else feeling disillusioned or is it just me? Thanks for reading all this and thanks for any suggestions? David

Strangely it started working again. I just took the battery out, left it for 10mins and then tried it and it seems to work fine. cant explain it myself, but thanks anyway

This could be the same as my problem http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=6454 Uninstall Windows Update KB840987 and hopefully this will work.

Patvan, Spot on! I uninstalled windows update KB840987, restarted and it works fine. I thought it may be one the windows updates but I didnt know where to start tracking it down. Thanks to everybody else who made suggestions. Its a sad state of affairs that we have to turn the support of enthusiasts rather than sonys technical support. Thanks again david EDIT: Seroka2, I uninstalled the update by going to control panel then add/remove programs. and then removed 'Windows Update KB840987'. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I have seen this uninstall method suggested for other issue so I had tried it. However I did it again and then installed sonic stage 2.1 and the problem still occurs. I havent installed any other usb devices so it cant be that. I doubt spyware would do this but I'll scan anyway. I dont think ss2.2 will make much difference. Sonic stage 2.0 worked fine for several months.

Hello, My Sonicstage and simple burner both crash when a minidisc is connected to the pc. This has only recently started occuring so its possibly something else that is installed on the pc that is causing this. The minidisc is a MZ-NH700 and the windows version is XP service pack 1. I was using Sonicstage 2.0 (and simple burner) fine until they started doing this. I have uninstalled ss2.0 and reinstalled from the cd that came with the minidisc. I have also installed ss2.1 from sony connect (I live in europe) but the problem is still occuring. Both applications start fine, but if I connect my minidisc they now crash. Or if the minidisc is connected before they start they crash as soon as they check the minidisc. I have tried using various discs formated to Hi-MD but it doesnt appear to be anything on the disc that is causing the problem. This discs still play fine and I can access the data on the disc. When simple burner crashes the message is: NetMDSB.exe - Application Error The instruction at "0x7fffffff" referenced memory at "0x7fffffff". The memory could not be read When Sonicstage starts the message is Omjbox.exe - Application Error The instruction at "0x6c371351" referenced memory at "0x00000004". The memory could not be read If anybody has experienced this or knows how to fix this I would be grateful. Regards David

Hi Sorry if this has been covered before but, Is is possilbe to upload to a PC the old md formats or just the new ones. I have lots of discs recorded using a microphone in the SP/mono/LP2 formats and I would like to make cds out of them. I was hoping that a hi-md would make uploading easy, as previous I have had to do this using an analogue lead. Anybody know? Thanks

Hi Guys, I bought a MZ-N710 about six months ago and I find that fairly often it just stops. Admittedly this usually happens when i make sudden movements like starting to dash for a bus or changing the pocket i keep this minidisc in. Previous mindiscs I've had would stutter occasionly, if the shock buffer expired but none of them actually stopped. My N710 stops and resets itself to the point it started playing at. Is this normal or something im doing or should I get the unit repaired whilst its still under its warrenty. Thanks for any advice offered. david

Thanks for the help. It does appear to be just a couple of faulty discs.

Hello, I was wondering if anybody has encountered a similar problem to this: My DHC-MD333 doesnt seem to be able to save the TOC information correctly any more. If the TOC is edited, it appears to be saved on the disc. If switched off and on the TOC remains. However once the disc is ejected and reinserted, the TOC reverts to the original or sometimes is corrupt and a disc error is reported. Stranger still is that if I put the disc in my MZ-R501 then this can read the edited TOC on the disc. Meaning that the disc has two different TOCs depending on which machine reads it. Could just be old disc but it seems to happen every time. Any solutions gratefully accepted. David
