does anyone know if I can use a program like FL studio, cakewalk, or cool edit 2000, to transfer my MD's and LP's via USB analog to digital connection to CD? If so should i run in two tracks simultaneously? or will one track suffice? please advise B.

Hey man, thanks for all of your help in the past. I purchased your program this summer and have really enjoyed it. problem is I have recent restored my system and lost it. Do I have to pay the 16 bux again? let me know if there is another way. Thanks Brian

I think its that Mz-r1 (correct me if I'm wrong) it was the first sony model, and it has an optical out. you can find one on ebay, but it'll be 10 years old. good luck -
you could try the ecm-719 i use it with an N1 but it accepts a battery that should accommodate your line in. good luck

I have the Sony ecm-719, and I think its made great recordings. it is very similar to the 717. If you are depending on plug in power and not using the optional battery to power the mic, you may be experiencing the effects of overloading the mic or the preamp that provides the plug in power. If you are using the battery, can you try to reduce the record level. unless you have superhuman ears or are recording for professional use you should get better than decent, clear recordings every time with this model. Well . . . go figure . . . BCJ

okay, this nero bit may work, but let me tell you what i've been doing: I go into control panel -> sounds -> advanced and then I have volume levels for everything like mic, line in, etc. i have reduced the line in volume to only 20% and that really sounds about the same (or exactly the same) as when its up at 100. Have I only been reducing the output of line in to the speakers but not the actual input? Is there some other way to adjust the inpu? i use windows XP on that same sony pcv-rs220. Thanks again Brian

Okay so I have a sony Mz-n1, I record a live show, then i connect my md to my USB and the WinNMD program sees and counts all tracks on the disc in the player, to record it I connect an analog line out with the md set to line out and plug it in to the line in on my PC (in this case a sony pcv-rs220) it winds up in my documents/my music and on the computer it is a wave or mp3 my choice. it plays fine on the PC but when i burn these wave or mp3 files to a CD-R they sound like shit!! totally distorted. What have I done wrong? I went into the sound settings and reduced the line in volume to less than half what else can I do? I will send money to whoever can answer this question without telling me to get a new soundcard. Thank you . . . be sure to include address. BCJ

hey, I just bought one and have recorded one live show at tipitina's in new orleans. it was loud and i got no distortion except what was caused by my occasional overboost of the manual record level on my sony n-1. Results were grade A. You dont need a batt-box, in fact the 719 has a place for a small watch type battery. I hear that you can reduce the risk of mic overload by combining the additional battery with your md's plug in power. I have not tested this theory. As for bass roll off i dunno. my first try yielded an excellent result/mix. I think the mic is quality and versatile . . . i use mine for home living room recordings. but let me know what you learn thru trial and error down the road. P.s. somewhere in this live recording thread, there is a post i put up about the 719 and an answer from someone as to whether you should use loud or soft mic power etc. it may be worth checking out. til then

I've got a new toy and lots of questions. that's good right? here goes: On the MZ-N1 i find the on the fly adjustment of recording levels easy to use. But the lack of a backlit lcd display terribly frustrating. So why should I not use the auto set recording level/default setting? Is it too low or too high etc. ? Also, I have a sony ecm-719 mic. its like the little ds70 except that it has a battery power option (powered with LR44 ). Can i use this additional power, and plug in power of the N1 simultaneously or will The input be too high? Here's a toughie. Is the music - voice switch on the ecm-719 an omni to unidirectional switch? would I prefer voice mode sometimes to cut out crowd noise behind and beside me? Any and all assistance appreciated.

ola righteous babe, if you don't mind analog conversion (personally it sounds good to me) then try out this program for about 11 bucks. WinNMD. its easy and cheap and allows you to hook up to net md, and it'll read the info off of your md. some players can upload digitally thru it, but i simply put my sony n1 in the net md usb cradle, then run a headphone line out to the line in on my pc. it records as I play, saves each track selected as wave or mp3 wherever you want on your computer and then you can burn to cd easily. its great and heres a link to how to do it - www.minidisc.org/netmd_analog_uploading.html try it out and see.
