  1. I couldn't tell you whether the sound quality of the N10 or 910 are any better than the 810. All I can say is that the sound quality of the 810 is pretty darn good and I'm happy with it. The N10 does offer 64x download for LP4 encoding (that's the greatest level of encoding), but for me 32x is fast enough. The N10 and 910 both offer a few features not on the 810, but then again, the 810 has radio, which is absent on the N10 and 910. Check out the equipment browser on minidisc.org homepage for these added features.
  2. I began using the nero solution for the past two or three days, and it's a piece of cake. I know that it would be easier if sony would scrap its DRM, but as long as I can get my music on to the machine in a relatively easy manner, I'm not bothered. Like everyone else in this forum, I only wish they made audio uploads easier.
  3. I just purchased the 810 and I've tried out the radio component in various situations. In my opinion, it's not bad. I live in a mountainous area where the reception can change drastically depending on where I am in the area. The reception of the 810 is just about as good as my car antenna -- meaning that it gets staticy when I drive in the outskirts of town, on a different side of a big mountain or if I'm at a low point in a valley. But all in all it works well. The added bonus is that you get VHF signals (TV Channels 2-13) and the weatherband. Maia is right about the fact that the reciever is in the remote. If you switch remotes to the car remote (supplied with the 810) or if you don't use the remote, you no longer have the ability to listen to the radio.
  4. What do you primarily want to do with the MD? If your primary use out of the device is to listen to music from MDs, then get a Sony 505 or 510. These models offer netmd, their relatively cheap and they still provide line in so that you can record from your stereo, cd player, etc. If you primarily want an MD for live recording, go for a sharp model (they seem to be the cheapest with a mic in and better at live recording than sony). If you want live recording and netmd go for the 707 (If you can find one -- they've been discontinued), an 810, N1, N10 or N910. For my needs, I purchased the 810 because it has radio, mic in and netmd. But really you should go for the model that best suits your needs. Sorry that I can't tell you exactly which to buy, but it really depends on what you want it for.
  5. I just purchased an MZ-NF810. This is my first minidisc recorder/player and I chose the NF810 because I wanted NetMD, microphone in and radio. For the past few months I've been surfing around looking for a portable audio player that would allow me to listen to large quantities of music, without being bulky. I also wanted something that would enable me to record interviews, ambient sounds and anything else (if I was so inclined). While the minidisc format is limited in upload capabilities, it seemed to be the best for what I wanted. Now getting to my main point of this post. I chose the 810 because of all the features it had. But looking throughout the Web, I haven't seen too many reviews on it. So here's my take on so far: While I am a MD novice, I am quite pleased with this unit. I have heard complaints that encoding songs at LP4 compression on Type-R recorders creates a "tinny" sounding song. But using the 810's virtual sound feature, the sound quality seems pretty darn good. I'm not sure if this is due to it being a Type-S recorder or because of the virtual sound. Regardless, it sounds good. The FM/AM/Weatherband/TV tuner works pretty well. I live in an area where mountains tend to impede on radio frequencies, but this units tuner picks up most frequencies as well as my car tuner. The TV tuner only picks up VHF stations (2-13), but it seems more of a novelty than anything else. The unit comes with a few items I could care less about -- car kit and special car remote. Perhaps if Sony nixed these items from the package, the unit would be a little bit less expensive. It's a pricey unit compared to some of Sharp's MDs and non-mic Sony units, but all in all I'm quite happy with it. With all its combined features (mic-in, netmd, radio, cheap memory, shock protection and the like), I couldn't imagine buying a different unit or an Ipod.
