I just purchased an MZ-NF810. This is my first minidisc recorder/player and I chose the NF810 because I wanted NetMD, microphone in and radio. For the past few months I've been surfing around looking for a portable audio player that would allow me to listen to large quantities of music, without being bulky. I also wanted something that would enable me to record interviews, ambient sounds and anything else (if I was so inclined). While the minidisc format is limited in upload capabilities, it seemed to be the best for what I wanted.
Now getting to my main point of this post. I chose the 810 because of all the features it had. But looking throughout the Web, I haven't seen too many reviews on it. So here's my take on so far:
While I am a MD novice, I am quite pleased with this unit. I have heard complaints that encoding songs at LP4 compression on Type-R recorders creates a "tinny" sounding song. But using the 810's virtual sound feature, the sound quality seems pretty darn good. I'm not sure if this is due to it being a Type-S recorder or because of the virtual sound. Regardless, it sounds good.
The FM/AM/Weatherband/TV tuner works pretty well. I live in an area where mountains tend to impede on radio frequencies, but this units tuner picks up most frequencies as well as my car tuner. The TV tuner only picks up VHF stations (2-13), but it seems more of a novelty than anything else.
The unit comes with a few items I could care less about -- car kit and special car remote. Perhaps if Sony nixed these items from the package, the unit would be a little bit less expensive.
It's a pricey unit compared to some of Sharp's MDs and non-mic Sony units, but all in all I'm quite happy with it. With all its combined features (mic-in, netmd, radio, cheap memory, shock protection and the like), I couldn't imagine buying a different unit or an Ipod.
