  1. Besides the numbers, everyone who contributed to this site deserve applause! Thanks and have a great new year!
  2. Really become a serious discussion...I thought this is a sub-forum for even rants OK. I believe everyone (I mean everyone) have equal rights to complain about things that she/he thinks is wrong, without personal attacks. So I did, as well as giving some constructive suggestion after moderator asked. If some of the words are too generalized and offended innocent people on this forum, I do applogize. But I hope we don't have to ask the question "How many posts should a member reply before he/she has the right to complain?". Since we are digging deeper on this, the thing that I don't like is using harsh words or trying to disdain others. Because I don't think there is anything serious enough on this forum that we have to do those. Everyone make mistakes, that's OK; and showing the truth is good enough. Harsh words or sterotyping goes a bit too far. That is like saying "Everyone is welcomed as long as you don't ...". Is that what we really meant in the welcome notes? BTW, although I disagree, I don't dislike you post. And thanks, I knew I would draw some negative feedback even before I started this thread, but thought it might worth speaking out. Anyway, if we all believe people are equally willing to make this forum better, we can continue discussing this; otherwise, I better go do more posts to earn some rights
  3. For those who can not go to China but can read Chinese, there are Hi-MD units being sold on Chinese websites too. E.g., this site is similar to ebay but more popular in China: http://list.taobao.com/browse/12-1206-120607/120607.htm Some of the sellers provide international shipping. The prices are often lower. I bought my EH1 from this seller a few months ago. http://my.taobao.com/mytaobao/user-rate-43...d585c0d5159.htm
  4. I appreciate your thoughts and action on that thread. If there is one suggestion that I would give, your closing comment could be simply "off-topic". Because I smelled smoke from both sides (YMMV), so better not to show your personal preference at that moment. This normally results in more credits on moderator role. As for who is right or wrong, it is often hard to say. As much as I love to contribute to this forum, I often find it hard to sqeeze time to do so. But you are right that my original post may not be as constructive as it should, my fault. I tried to make it up with my earlier post.
  5. Since I forget when, I only visit MDCF occasionally because of various reasons. Today, I was trying to catch up with the latest, and soon saw this post: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=16956 It reminds me why I didn't come here every often... It is not that don't like MD, not that I don't apprecciate the work of people on this forum, neither that I cannot get help from here. But, as non-active contributor, I don't feel that I am part of it. It feels like one of the places where you come read, learn, and ask questions carefully, and then after sometime you leave. Maybe it is because the house keeping attitude (which I remember being discussed before), or something else, I don't know. Don't get me wrong, I still love this forum. But I am afraid it is not like a friend you can relax and talk to. Just my 2 cents
  6. Hi Richyhu, thanks for your reply! I understand that EH1 wasn't intend to sell in China, but I hoped that there are some tricks for people that want Chinese menus. I read the tricks referenced in your post, but it was for display inside SS software only, not for the unit/remote. To enable Chinese titles/menus on my RH10 unit, I had to enter service mode and modify the destination code. After that, I had my RH10 working properly with Chinese titles/menus displayed on the unit. While we are at it, I think I have three questions (assume using the same disc that has Chinese titles and works properly on RH10 unit): 1. How to show Simplified Chinese menus on RM-MC40ELK when working with RH10? My RH10 works great on Chinese menus, but when I hook it up with MC40ELK, the menu automatically became English, although the unit still shows Chinese menus. 2. How to show Simplified Chinese titles on RM-MC40ELK when working with RH10? My RH10 works great on Chinese titles, but when I hook it up with MC40ELK, the titles becomes "...."(one dot for each Chinese character), although the unit still shows Chinese titles. 3. If either of the above works, how can I make it work when use working with EH1? Thanks!
  7. Does anyone know (and tried) how to enter service mode for MZ-EH1? I searched on the forum but couldn't find any info. I bought a MZ-EH1 recently from Japan and it (or more accurately, the RM-MC40ELK remote) only display english or Japanese menus, I want to enable Simplified Chinese menu but don't know how. I assume you can do it by entering the service mode (like other Hi-MD units) and change the destination code, but neither the methods in FAQ area works for EH1. Help is appreciated!
  8. Makes sense. The reason that I asked is so that we know it is 'technically' possible. Sure people have given up the hope for a native OS X app, the Mac fans (well, including me) just want to know if there is a way without touching a PC I did get a chance to try. Here are some of the details: Mac: 1.33GHz Powerbook G4, 768 MB SDRAM, OS X 10.3.9, MS Virtual PC 6 VPC: Win2K SP4, 128MB memory (I don't recall the system requirement of SS, but it works on my VPC, which emulates "Pentium II with MMX") Downloading a 5min mp3 to RH10 took about 50 seconds. But if convert&transfer using 64kpbs bit rate, than is took about 15 mins (yes, 15) while more than 14 mins were doing conversion. Uploading a 1 min Hi-SP recording took about 12 mins and then converting the uploaded file to wav took about 9 mins. (I have no idea why upload took so long) I also tried to upload a PCM recording of the same length, but it was even slower so didn't bother to wait until it finished. While by no means the above numbers be accurate (nor be propotional to the length of recording), it does give some indications of how practical to use SS on Mac. Bottom line, if you directly download mp3 files from Mac, it is not bad; otherwise, you may be better off buying M10/M100, or finding a PC, or use an analog link. Hope this is helpful for Mac users, since SS/VPC is not absolutely useless depends on your use case.
  9. Is this true? I remembered seeing posts about using Virtual PC on Mac to upload hi-md recordings. The point was that, if you can upload to PC, you can upload to Mac using Virtual PC. I never tried myself though...
  10. I think I am going choose between RH10 and EH1, but not sure it is fair to compare recorder units with player only units...
  11. To my personal experience, this is the most helpful forum! So thank you to whoever helped here! But... I sort of felt this forum is not as active as it could be (blame Sony for the most part). While I appreciate mods/admins' effort to keep the topics as clean/sorted as possible (don't get me wrong, I think that is a good thing), it could have side effects that restrains people's enthusiasm to participate. For a lot of newbies, especially those who may not have much online expereience, they would feel bad/stupid when getting the "go do a search" answer for their questions ("Search" link isn't obvious in the forum UI anyway)... How about: 1. Instead of say "do a search", give out specific search terms and a link to the search page, that won't take much time, but can be even more friendly and welcoming. 2. Instead of freeze/delete the topic (offensive ones excepted), just reply with a link pointing to the existing/duplicate topic(s). If people continue to reply to the new topic, maybe they really mean a different question, so worth a new topic. I know you experts may think the other way, but we are talking about newbies, right? 3. Instead of keeping every topic in one forum, maybe create a "best topics archive" subfolder in each forum, so mods/admins can move/copy the good topics to the archive periodically, and can even purge the unimportant topic once a month. I don't think the problem is about rudeness here, it is how to make the forum more friendly, helpful and welcoming. That is everyone is trying to figure out, isn't it. my 2c. BTW, it would be a different story if we are trying to make a forum for "the inner circle of people who stick around long enough".
  12. too bad that I want a black EH1 otherwise it would have gone either Anyone know where to buy a black model with 'reasonable' (around $200) price?
  13. PCM for recording. 256 for burn CD onto Hi-MD 132 or 64 for burning downloaded mp3s (depends on how to the mp3 is, but overall, 64 more often than 132 unless I care about comptibility)
  14. Anyone tried it from buyfromjapan? How much does the black model cost? I may better ask him/her directly... update 11/10: asked buyfromjapan, he/she doesn't have EH1 either (black or silver). update 11/27: the other alternative is japan-direct, but the price is really high...
  15. My N510 has one, to which I attached the provided stripe. But I hardly use the stripe because it is just easier to put the MD player in my pocket than hold it in hand (since there is not much to look at on a N510
