  1. Alright Alright. Have been away for a while so I have totally fallen out of touch with news etc. Does anyone know when the HI-MD's will be on sale in Republic of Ireland? Also how is Hi-MD looking? I sold my net md to my mate and was planning to get the HiMd900, but is it what everyone expected? At the stage i want to buy the best format cause i am planning to copy all my music onto it in one marathon session, and HIMD seems like the way forward but will there be some 12gb MD format out in a few months that will make me regret my decision? Cheers.

  2. hI

i have lost both of the foam pads for MY sennheiser mx-400's and now the buds dont fit so well plus bass is definitely down a bit. anyone know any solutions? was going to superglue some material to the buds to create the same effect but it would ruin them especially if it doesnt work.

  3. I decided to give realplayer 10 a try for netmd recordings but i can't download the plugin - some weird setting in realplayer. Does anyone have the plugin or know where to get it apart from directly through realplayer? Also is sound quality ok when using realplayer - or is it put through too many formats and ruined b4 it gets to the md?

  4. its only painful when something goes wrong - like a horrible software issue - but I have never had any trouble - especially when you have a forum like this to help you out - I would have been very frustrated without it. the sound from a cassette put onto md will be only as good as the tape deck you use to record it with - so use a top grade tape player on a good stereo. yeah its much, much better than tape - you can press one button and go to next song almost instantly - move songs around - delete them, add more etc. make sure you read up on recording modes - lp2 lp4 etc -i am not sure which one is officially the best for tape recordings, but use your ears rather than what you are told cause you'll be the one listening to the music. whatever horror stories you hear are the worst that could happen scenarios - once you have the right information, it's very easy and straighforward.

sound won't be too different - my favourite tape album that i have - LL Cool J All World - (its hilarious) - i put that onto MD recently and the sound is at least the same as the tape version - but tapes decline in quality with usage - you couldnt listen to a MD enough to make it decline - you would go deaf first.

regarding hiss - if you set the recording volume right on the MD and have dolby noise reduction on the tape player - hiss should be minimal.

  5. hmmmmm. have good read through this thread - you should find some info for recording

    recordinghttp://forums.minidisc.org/viewforum.php?f=13

but if you want to "digitize" it - putting it straight onto md will do just that. there is a myriad of tools out there for "massaging" your recordings - but in my experience the more formats involved - the worse the sound quality. thats why i recommended going straight from cassette to md - only one format change - from cassette - to .omg (md format).

i noticed this with windows media player - if i record a cd onto my hdd with it ( in .wma), then import to md software (in .omg) the sound quality is depleted.

as regards exactly what software to use - and your AC97 - i do not know enough about them to comment really but you should have no problem finding good software on the net.

putting it onto pc - then onto md - wil take time. but if you have good software and get get the music fully edited etc and ready to go to md - then i suppose that sounds good - do all editing on pc then lob it straight to md. although you may still have to insert track marks manually on the md after recording.

i don't know if you have a md or not but HI-MD is coming very soon - if you haven't noticed from this forum - so if you dont have a unit, it may be a good idea to hold off until the new format is released to buy one OR as everyone will be selling their old units to get new ones - you could pick up a nice cheap (older) one on the net!! heh heh.

  6. hiya. i was doing the same thing a few weeks ago - i had a lot of music on tape that i wanted to keep, but i hadn't listened to a cassette in years. i copied songs onto my minidisc portable with a straight 3.5mm (headphone style jack) cable - it's just one connection at each end. this went from earphones out on cassette walkman to line in on minidisc recorder. the sound was awful even though the tape was in good nick and the cassette player was an expensive panasonic portable.

i then tried to use the awia stereo my friend has downstairs. i just used the same cable as before - from earphones out on front of stereo to line in on md - and it worked fine. sound was good - not great by any means - but "listenable to". then i plugged the md - which is a net md, into my pc and organized the tracks. i had tp split them manually but if you buy a deck - even the most basic one like the mdsJE480 - it has a feature that will auto insert spaces between tracks. then all you have to do is name them. To allow for the reduced tape quality - i recorded in sp - not much compression - and i listen to my old tapes all the time now.

i don't think it really matters what type of laptop you have - as long as it will take the md software - so you can title and organize the songs on the actual mini disc itself after you have recorded onto it. i suppose you could record tapes onto the laptop then onto md but i dont see the point. straight realtime recording onto md from tape from a good stereo at sp recording mode worked fine for me.

  7. From what I know, the SS2 uploading to PC is only possible with HIMD. SS2 is probably no better (with a netmd) than Realplayer - but people use it as it's the official software and easy enough to use if it is set up correctly. you can still upload now though with line out on netmd portable - to line in on your PC but you would need decent recording software like CoolEdit or the likes. Obviously, uploading is going to be in realtime (1X).

  8. i use win2kpro as well. i use sonicstage2 and have had no problems with it. the only thing i do not like about it is the track protection. when you record a song onto minidisc via ss2, it can only be deleted with ss2 so if you are not connected your your pc, you cannot delete the song. a bit annoying, but simple burner did not have this issue. dont know if simple burner works with ss2 though.

i record straight onto ss2 at lp2 then to my minidisc. sound is fine.

i imagine they will supply you with openmg - basically the same as sonic stage 1.5 but not as good as sonictage2. i would not bother installing openmg if that's what you get with it and install sonicstage2 instead. it has better features like no maximum number of recordings out to minidiscs - openmg had a limit of three per song, albeit you could get around this. the link below should tell you more on ss2.

  9. kjpalmer - i took your advice - last Saturday i was in HMV in Dublin and I bought the sennheiser mx400's - the mx500's were there aswell but it looked like they were the same except for volume control on the 500's which I don't need as i have a remote anyway.

They were 25 euro - i suppose about 17 sterling. I was sort of disappointed at first but i stuck the foam pads on them and maybe they needed a wear in or something but they are great. Nice bass - not tremendous but nice, and good clear sound. Isolation is good - I have bowie blaring on them now - and no one in work is complaining so presumably they can't hear anything. The fit was only okay but with the pads on they fit perfectly.

So I'm happy with them anyway - thanks. They are my main phones now for work- motorbike etc.

  10. Hi. Just wondering about using windows media player 9. A lot of the time if I am recording a cd - I will record it onto my HDD with media player as I use it as a jukebox of sorts in my pc. Then, if I want to stick an album onto MD, I will import it with SS2 and transfer to MD. My question is: if i am doing this, and I record a cd onto my HDD at 48kpb or 64kps with media player then I transfer it onto MD at LP2 - am I conning myself? Am I really just putting the album opnto MD at whatever I recorded it at with media player and not really getting LP2 at all?

So should I be recording with Media Player to my HDD at 160kps or above so that when I import to SS2 and transfer to MD at LP2, I am actually getting LP2 / 162kps? Or is it all totally independent and it doesnt matter what i do with media player 'cause SS2 will record to MD at 162kps regardless?

  11. Hi. Just looked at a few specs for HIMD - it says you can transfer 45 cd's onto one 1GB MD! At what quality/compression is this? And at SP or the HI-SP how much recording time do you get? I would imagine they are quoting 45 cd's - 1MD at lowest possible quality - 66kps or below. The NH600 looks like a nice model - how much will that one be in Europe?

Have Sony released any prices yet for HIMD decks? Cheers.

  12. Hello. Just deleted openmg and simple burner and got SS2 as this forum suggested. Its looks good and seems to be less of a system hog than Openmg anyway. Also the unlimited checkouts is nice. But why oh why - can I not delete songs on my md unit or deck that I recorded using SS2. i just tried it a minute ago and got the old TRPROT message. Very annoying cause if I need to delete a track to make space for something when I am not at home - i can't. Thats what i liked about simple burner - no crappy track protection. Can I use simple burner with SS2 installed? Its very annoyinh and I can't even see the point of this protection.

Also - the 256kps option for recording - is that purely for HiMD?

  13. Hi. i have a sony mdsje480 deck. The digital out on my dvd player - which i use a the cd player is coaxial only so i bought a coax - optical converter. it does the job fine but after a lot of fiddling around last night - i stll can't get deck to pick up new tracks - i.e. it records cd's as one long track. i changed settings - like the sync recording etc but cant get it to work.

anyone know what this is? i doubt its the signal converter cause one its converted thats it - its a digital signal and the deck should change tracks as the source cd does. must be some setting.

also is there anyway to get this deck to clone? and lastly, is there group function on this deck - it has group on the remote but cant get it to work on deck - group button seems to do nothing even when im using an md that i defo recorded groups onto.

    go raibh mile maith agat.

  14. yikes - very conflicting opinions. i cant use the px's as i use my md a lot when driving my motorbike. no comments please on road safety/the law - I KNOW. so i need the buds as they are the only type of earphones that allow a helmet. i have senn hd's for home use cant remember which model but mid range ones - about €60 and the produce great sound - terrific bass - so i might try the mx500's - is the bass good with these ones.

by bright do you mean tinkery and not enough bass?

  15. Hi. If i record music onto an MD with OpenMg - then i decide to delete a track or two - is there a way to do this on the unit itself? - its the N505, or do i have to use the pc i used to record in the first place to delete tracks? Does this mean that all my MD's that i have recorded with this PC will be permanent when this PC gets replaced? i.e. - i will never be able to delete tracks/entire MD's when this PC gets replaced?

  16. We had richer sounds here up until quite recently but they have left the republic now. don't know why - it was a great shop - bought all my MD/Home Theatre stuff there. I'm sure I'll find those earbuds somewhere here though. thanks very much.

  17. Hi. I use OpenMg and have Windows Media PLayer 9 on my laptop but I can't use Realplayer on my computer at all for various reasons. So sometimes I export music and sounds to OpenMg that were recorded or downloaded in .wav format. I use the playlist feature quite a lot on Windows media player - for example just select "Rock" and the program will make a random playlist for me that's all rock songs etc etc. Some of these playlists are very good as I have tons of albums for it to choose from on my HDD.

When I go to "import" on OpenMg and try to import the playlist , the drop down folder for that playlist is empty - I presume because windows media player doesn't actually move songs to the playlist folder - so OpenMg can't find anything there to import. Does anyone know how to import these playlists? (apart from the obvious of importing it song by song - too painful with OpenMg!!)

  18. morning. the gammy phones that came with my n505 have finally packed in so im on the market for a new pair - basically i will have to get a pair this weekend. I use the MC11EL remote with the portable - does anyone have any suggestions for good earphones? - buds i suppose.
