I bought a Sony MZ-NF610 and am loving it. But I want to make live recordings of my piano playing and lectures and stuff. Is it possible to do it?

it says you can use a self-powered mic. Is this true? It seems to be the only place on the net that says this. Most say it is not possible to make live recordings. All I know is that I'd have to use the line in (optical) jack for whatever recording I can make.
If I can indeed record stuff, what kind of microphone do I need?
