did you read the post on headfi about how TSA took Guru's MINT and Porta Corda MK II amps? Now he's saying his CMoy was the bomb. I just about died laughing.
-
LOL Jahn asked the same question! I was wondering where the Beyer girl was!
-
Yeah, I know but I'm broke now. I can't afford the parts to build another one.

Yes. Type-R is basically nothing more than Sony ATRAC 4.5 with a second pass-through filter. The benefits of Type-R are only on the encoding side; of course the recording will sound better than plain vanilla v4.5, and the recording will be decodable even by older equipment. Current Sharp ATRAC (I believe it's version 7) is just as good as ATRAC Type-R, however.

Since I don't have an MD, I guess this will be What's In a Group of Sectors on Cori's iPod Mini's Hard Drive. Heaviest listening recently has been Ueto Aya's debut album "AYAUETO," Portishead's "Dummy," Aikawa Nanase's "purana," and APC's stellar "the thirteenth step."

Stolen from head-fi. http://www2.117.ne.jp/~ota-beam/otb-hp.htm Shame there's no Beyerdynamic girl though.

Seriously jealous of your Elantec buffies. I'd do untold things to adapt those suckers to work in place of the BUF634s on my pimeta... And yes, that is the ugliest "enclosure" I've ever seen. Why'd you do that? lol, wouldn't an el cheapo plastic enclosure from an electronics store be easier to work with and look better?

I was being facetious.

The E888s are great little earbuds. They're rather fragile though so you will have to take care of them. The driver construction is of a type of paper (Sony gets all fancy and calls it bio-cellulose, which basically means paper) and they tend to wear out after about a year or two of heavy use. They are quite efficient; they only impede 32ohms and have a 108dB/mW sensitivity. Great little open buds. I used to have a pair but I'm rather rough on my portable phones, so I now pack Shure E3cs for isolating buds and Koss KSC-75s for open phones on the go. Both are pretty well indestructable. Other good recommendations at the same general price point of the E888s are the Sennheiser PX100, D22 eggos, Shure E2cs (good for you because you have a parametric EQ and can fix the problems these phones have un-EQed) and if you're lucky the Etymotic ER-6 (although they're also pretty fragile).

There is also a Linkwitz DIY crossfeed board available from tangent. http://www.tangentsoft.net/audio Personally I don't like crossfeed, the very channel separation situation that you take issue with is one of the reasons I love my headphones. It's aural bliss to me when Aikawa Nanase's band hits that guitar and synth instruments and it bounces from channel to channel... it's like whoooooa...

The problem iPod has is it's so popular. In my rebellious outcast nonconformist world, popular usually means it sucks, because according to rebellous outcast nonconformist rules, normal people are idiots. So, I naturally deduced that the iPod sucked. Upon using one, I learned the error of my ways. I do like Macs, but they aren't the best gaming systems, and that's primarily what I use my computer for. So I stick to PC.

Well, unfortunately they are all out of these in my size. So, I guess I'll try to find something else...

This is still subjective; I don't consider 132kbps ATRAC3 to be any better than LAME CBR 128kbps MP3. Both of them aren't good enough for me anymore (e.g. my equipment has gotten too picky as of late). That's another thing it depends on. LP2 mode might be acceptible and hard to tell from Hi-SP with Sony EX71s unamped, but with Shure E5c amped, you better believe you can tell the difference. E5s aren't especially forgiving and amping them makes them even less so.

I'm happy Apple made the Shuffle. Finally something for all those Apple hatorz to direct their feelings at so they'll stop dissing the normal iPod/Mini.

Crappy Sound Caused By The Equalizer On My Mz-nh700
aeriyn replied to macmalon's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
Sounds like something is compressing the music, narrowing its dynamic range. I don't know what would do that except perhaps the ATRAC encoder. If it does do that, then ATRAC sucks even more than I once thought. -
Sony engineers have likely known this for years, but they've fought the new management tooth and nail every step of the way; when the upper echelons of the company changed in the mid-90s, things just got... FUBARed. Seems like there may be a new internal rift within Sony... we can only hope that it causes them to return to their roots and start producing products on a level with their legendary PCDPs of yore.

I really want to go up to New York and see my best friend Nika. I miss her loads. But, I can't... I have work.

I amp my E3cs, not for the bass, but for the high end. =P Just a simple little CMoy in a Hammond case, 1x 9V power, OPA2227... it's rather cute.

I know it is. That's one of the reasons I want it. One, I prefer looking cute or on the cute side of sexy; it fits my personality better, and two, I can't get away with too much more than that! I've never pictured lace making me look formal. *giggle* I always just thought it was so cute, and what little lingerie I own reflects that (every piece is lacy). But I see your point; I often buy new swimsuits when I want something cute like that. (It's usually cheaper, too!)

Get a pair of decent bookshelf speakers and one of those Sonic Impact Tripath amplifiers, and you'll be set for a decent 2 channel speaker setup.

Unfortunately, Hi-MD is only usable through SonicStage, which will not run on your machine as it is below the minimum system requirements. Anyhow, it's a damn resource pig and bogs down even on my Athlon XP 2200+, so don't expect it to work. None of this stops you from using the S/PDIF input on your Hi-MD unit though. It is real-time recording, but it's certainly better than no recording.

There's an ATRAC plug-in for Winamp, but it still uses teh OpenMG garbage.

Current audio related gear. Cambridge Audio D500SE ~ $220 (used) DIY Maxed out PIMETA headphone amp ~ $240 Beyerdynamic DT440 ~ $100 (used) iPod Mini (with line-out, case) ~ $300 Shure E3c ~ $130 DIY OPA2227 CMoy ~ $60 DIY interconnects (0.5m RCA pair and 2m mini-to-mini) ~ $30 Chaintech AV710 sound card ~ $30 Sony D-311 PCDP ~ $70 Sony MDR-E888LP ~ $40 Koss KSC-75 ~ $20 Etymotic 72ohm P to S converter ~ $15 DIY 220 ohm converter ~ $10 9V rechargeables ~ $10 Total: approximately $1275.00 US. The D-311 is on loan to my brother so he actually has a decent home source. He's using it with an OPA2227-based wall/battery powered transportable PIMETA I built for him (4x 470uF Pana FC filter caps, wima 1.0uF high speed resevoir, Gain 2, Pana EVJ pot, OPA2227 on OPALR and OPA227 on OPAG) paired with Grado SR-80s. In addition to what I have now, factor in what I once had. Sony CDP-CE345 ~ $100 (used) Pioneer DV-563A ~ $80 (used) Sony MDS-JE630 ~ $160 (used) Sony MZ-N10 ~ $200 Sony MZ-N505 ~ $30 Sharp MD-DS8 ~ $125 (used) Sharp HP-MD33 ~ $50 Audio-Technica ATH-A500 ~ $100 DIY wall-powered CMoy (OPA2134 based) ~ $35 Total: another around $880.00 US. This does not count my PC and the cost of blank media, nor does it factor in the money I spent on CDs.

my review of the Sharp HP-MD33S Four Pole Headphones
aeriyn replied to campekenobi's topic in 'phones
They're different sizes. The medium sleeves don't fit everyone. Of course they can eventually wear out or be torn by rough handling; the Sharp replacement sleeves are unavaliable but the replacement sleeves for the Sony EX51/70/71/81/NX1/NC11 will work for this earphone. These can be purchased from Sony's part replacement website or from audiocubes. Bluetin doesn't carry them.
